I dunno... thought about this long and hard... Seems like a lifter would be the best way to carry off the girl.:D Well, any ideas?

4 bar linkage!

Whatever you create, don't use the drill motors for your drive train...

Spark is using Drills to run and we won VCU. We find it good that they lock up once no power is to them.

It's all about the Atwoods and van door motors with a forklift type mechanism with a couch instead of arms.

Those Bosch drill motors gave us more trouble than anything else on the robot. We had to build seven drive trains just to get them working, and even then, there was so much torque on them that they flipped the breaker every time we got *millimeters* away from the HDPE.

So I half blame it on the drill motors and half on design, but I still think our drills are possessed.

For what reason would you need a robot to get a girl with? Use a sweet smile and a charming hello. ;)

our drills only locked up once, cause our driver was being a (l)user...

"what? it stopped working? (the breaker broke) I guess i'll push the joystick HARDER!"

heh, our driver(me) is also our designer and a member of the construction team. Benefits of a small team, huh? I would never hurt our poor robot. Well, not badly, anyway.

Josh Hambright
11-03-2003, 19:22
our driver suffered from the same problem until i threatened to reach over and grab the controls away from him to stop him from tripper breakers (i'm the aux operator of everything but the wheels themselves)

You want to know how to get a girl at a regional or at nats?

If she's sitting in the stands:
Sit with her, make her laugh, and ask her to hang out with you at the team party.

If she's working in the pits:
Ask her to take a break and go to lunch with you. If she's too busy, bring lunch to her.

Works every time. Why do guys have so much trouble finding this out?!

Josh Hambright
11-03-2003, 22:58
wait does this actualy work?

I wonder if my GF would mind me trying this on a girl just to see if it would work...

maybe i'll just use one of my grunts to do it for me as a scientific experiment.

Amanda Morrison
12-03-2003, 14:11
This actually works. Promise. You'll get her every time.

p.s. - You call them grunts? I call mine minions!

My boyfriend is on the team. He's the one that got me into it. :D

Though that isn't how I met him...When I first met him I was amazed how he wanted to hang out with me and not my sister (who's closer to his age than I am).

So, guys, just give her some attention!

My thoughts exactly. Everything but robotics and math is put on hold for build season and competition season.

Amanda Morrison

I met my longtime boyfriend on team 71 last year.

Figures, I was the loud, rambunctious cheerleader at competitions, and he was the quiet, sit-in-the-stands type.

But all he did was smile and say hi, be nice to me at competitions, and that was a year ago.

I'm telling you, it works!

Josh Hambright
13-03-2003, 08:19
Half of the guys on our team have in their AIM info
"Look at my girl friend!"
And its just a link to our inventor submission...hehe

Our tech advisor carries a picture around in his wallet and tells people "hey wanna see a picture of my girlfriend?!?!" and then shows them the inventor drawing he printed out.

Mmmmm robot loving

As i always say "You gotta give love to the robot to get love from the robot!":]

Josh Hambright
13-03-2003, 11:47
hehe i hug the robot on a regular basis...if you have seen our tote mechanism you'll know that it hugs back too...but now it has apendages which kinda hurt when it hugs you:)

I have been known to kiss the robot too on occasion...and many other strange thigns...like the lucky hammer (RIP!) i wish we still had that thing.

We used to rub it on the robot to charge it with good luck then i would kiss it, chris would kiss it, shannon would kiss it and then me again, then we would set it on the robot until it got off the field, at which time i would put it in my pocket, then i would rub it exactly 14 times before the start of the match....chris and i both freaked when we lost it...

But we dont need luck to win when we have skill...and hot chix on our team:)

Ash

I'm just hoping that my mad skillz at driving the robot will turn me into a living legend, and in turn cause groupies to follow me around, or have girls throw their "unmentionables" at me while on stage. Just like The Beatles. :D

Josh Hambright

the best part is when they rock like ours and do work!

Even if you loose you still got the females there to make it all better.

Every team should have hot chix thus why the RCU is a good thing.

Alright, I don't know Shannon Schnepp all that well, but judging what I know about you and Chris, I can picture this happening.

I was near tears when they took our crate away in St. Lou. *sigh*

Ah well, there's always IRI, right? I think that's Chris' last competition, and I know we're losing seniors too, but we'll have fun nevertheless.

Josh Hambright
14-03-2003, 01:24
Shannon is crazy, she is a lifer.

Its going to be alot of peoples last competition on our team...it'll be my last one as a high school student, i dont know if i'll drive there or not, i took over for carl (former driver now advisor) at IRI last year and did a crappy job, but i dont know if we will do that again this year or not, probably.

I hope i can fill chris's shoes next year, though my feet are probably bigger then his.

Amanda Morrison
14-03-2003, 01:28
If there is anything I've learned from FIRST, a great mentor always produces great students, who become great mentors, who produce great students...

See? You don't need robotics to get the girls. Just ask a mentor how it's done, preferably ones like Chris Noble from 461 who have been around for four years, and they'll tell ya.

Believe me. An engineering major will always get the girls before any other type of major. Go visit Rose-Hulman sometime. I wouldn't lie. :D

Josh Hambright
14-03-2003, 08:14
ask chris for ladie advice?

He should be asking me:) I am the robotics Ladies man!

We have love on our robotics team between 2 underclassmen members...and its adorable... everyone is all "see robotics = love" and it makes me laff!

Amanda Morrison
15-03-2003, 12:16
I think Robotics actually encourages involvement with other people. After all, you're around these people 24 hours a day, seven days a week (save for showering, sleeping, etc.). If you find someone that you're compatible with on your team, I say go for it - you're going to be around that person a lot, and as long as you aren't all over each other in the stands or anything, you will have someone to eat lunch with and have a good time.

Last year, we ended up having five different 'couples' during the build season, and another after nats. One broke up immediately, one dragged on and made both miserable for a while, one is still semi-together, and three are still going strong.

I think one of the hardest thing about being in a relationship with someone on your team is that you have to realize that you're there to design, build, engineer, and have fun in the process... and that doesn't always give you a lot of time to hang out with your significant other. Because of this, some girls and guys get jealous, and things just don't work out (at all). I know some of the couples on our team worked out a night after robots where we would all just go bowling, or out to eat, or somewhere besides a team meeting where we could spend time together... (this is especially effective if your team is made up of different schools) and the couples that realized that robots and relationships are two different things are the couples that are still together, a year or more later.

Whatever you do, make sure that you can do both before you get in over your head.

Some of you guys are crazy!
Robotix fantasies? Of being great drivers? = Beatles?
.....
OK, well, I'm guilty just the same, not, er, in the same
story line, (no male unmentionables please!)
but guilty nonetheless of daydreams
:p

but some of your stories.... chick magnet? lifter 'couches'?
wow,
i'd say try the smile thing first,
b/c remember, that FIRST girls are sligtly different,
and if they don't not like it,

be aware, they prob. know how to use power tools
....
or misuse:ahh:

Fantasies are a perfectly legal way of relieving stress, and they're all I got! Whenever I try to talk to a girl its always "Hi, my nam::gurgle:: ::gag:: ::stammer, stutter, look like a fool::" :( . I find it much easier to just think about what I would say to a girl than actually say it to her.

Besides, whats wrong with being crazy? They keep me sane.

This is true,

Don't forget that FIRST girls are much different than the rest of the fe-species... they're brainy, they've got power tools, and they think FIRST boys are adorable. No matter how nerdy they may or may not be, or consider themselves to be.

Go up to those girls. Talk to them. Stammer. Twitch. Do whatever it is that you do - but just be yourself, and guaranteed, there's a girl out there for you wishing on her lucky drill motor that you'll come around and talk to her.

Awww, come on, give your peers some credit. :)

I've yet to meet a FIRST student with that little self-esteem, confidence, or courage. Girls aren't half as intimidating as you make them out to be. Let's see if I can make this easier.

FIRST boys - think of girls as robots. Except really, REALLY hard to put back together or make sense of. Once you figure one of them out, keep that one, and never tear it apart or analyze it again! :p

I have a non robotics girl and she is begining to despise the team and first because she never gets to see me...

I really have to make an effort to make time for her in between work and robots and school...

She was like cursing when she found out the ship date was extended cuz she knew that was just more time i would be spending at school.

Silly girl.

They are like robots, and i have a whole theory about that, but i dont want to get into it now.
I also have a theory as to why all robots are communist.

this is true you all need to chill out, I tell all my heart suppressed
guy friends, girls aren't all that important -- I mean as in 'having'
which is another topic. Girls aren't meant to be owned, OK?

but yes, chill out, if a girl's cool, even if you go up to her and say
'hey, that's a nice shirt/button/robot/somethingelseunoffencive'
they're not gonna spaz at you (atleast i think),
and everyone in FIRST is out to make friends,
the girls are just as shy as guys,

I mean, I'd be shy to talk to a girl as much as I would to talk to a guy,
but then again, I'm not all that shy in making an idiot of my self
in public :D or to people - i find it all fun

I am currently forming a new theory as to what political system girls are...i think it might be facist (just kidding)

I'm gonna shut my mouth now though before i get flamed:)

Not all girls are communist
but all robots are communist
All girls are robots...

The theories can exist independantly of each other but not at the same time in the same space etc...

I guess it just kinda eerks (that a word?) when a guy just tries to "get a girl". Call me old fashioned but im more of a relationship guy.

Sure meeting someone through robotics is awesome, but I am definitely not involved in FIRST to "get girls".

More guys need to approach girls and just say hi, be friends, etc. Friendships and relationships through FIRST are incredible and a lot of fun.

I don't understand why it's so hard to approach girls at a competition... it's not like boys don't outnumber us 3:1. :D

YAY!

Just wait amanda when you hear my theories about dean:) they are kinda twisted...but my team has had to listen to them all year.

And my theories about woodie are just funny!

And then there is my theory of how they came up with the game this year.

I wish i could get my gf into robots, but she is a swimmer and like active in the band and doesn't have any free time. Our busyest seasons coincide making things kinda dificult. But we survived:)

On a seperate note...on the issue of 'getting a girl' i dont think thats what the thread meant...not like 'getting her' or 'hookin up for the night' more of just how to meet a girl and get her to notice you and talk to you.

As as most of the girls have pointed out, the girls at competition are just as eager to meet us as we are to meet them. We all just need to stop being silly and talk:)

First of all - firewolf is right! i've made guy friends at robotics every year (i would have made girl friends, but there aren't as many of us gals!!!). my team does the same thing - calls me a major flirt, etc. i'm not! i'm just friendly!

and guys ~ go ahead and make a fool of yourself. yeah, we'll prolly laugh, but not in a derogatory way, cuz we've all done it! seriously, just be wacky and crazy and fun and come talk to us. we do like it (or at least I do).

yeah, first guys tend to be super nice, and most of us won't shoot you down - unless you're being a complete jerkoff. In that case, you deserve it - but i've not seen many jerks at robotics. remember, we don't bite... often...

Josh Hambright
19-03-2003, 12:23
Well if all goes accourding to plan i may actualy be able to get outa our pit for awhile in chicago, minus my scouting and driver responsibilities, i should be relenquishing most all of my 'technical' responsibilities to a junior to jump start him into his job next year of being the student incharge of SCIPPE(Sensors and Controls Integrated with Pneumatics Programming and Electrical our neato little subteam name) next year.

I dont usualy have time to talk to the ladies unless they are in the pit and i talk to them when i'm scouting or if they are on the driver/hp team and i talk to them about strategy.

So very true, I LOVE it when people are just silly.

But think of it, guys, if you're silly,
this girl you wanna talk to is surrounded by
guys like that all the time,
she's not gonna shoot you down!

There's a 999% (yes 999, started off as a typo, but that per centage sounds good) chance that you'll make a friend.
