View Full Version : Animators Unite
And so it starts....
the first domino have fallen, hitting others, hitting others. We are the ones who determine how long this continues. I can only hope it doesn't die out like many of its predecessors.
I'm not too certain what was the downfall of the others, but this- this should community should be different. First off, this community will be backed up by a strong force on individuals that will dedicate time and effort to this project. Second, we are unbound by any limits. Our home isn't yahoo or some place like that. We would have created it, we would have shaped this into something we want this to be. Third, I'm thankful for chiefdelphi for their forum on which to communicate with others to form this community. We have a good sense of togetherness now, why not expand this to others?
I have so many goals for this community it's hard to even remember some of them, but the idea is simple- growth.
I want to see newbies with the desire to learn such a complex program such as 3ds Max do so with this community. I'd like to see beginners turn intermediate and intermediate turn advanced and the advices turn master and some time in between that time, helping others to do so too.
I'd like friendships to be formed despite the fact they are 1,000 miles away. Distance won't matter. I want this community to bring about positive change to everyone who comes- even if it's for a little tutorial.
I'd like for team to talk to team to talk to team all sharing knowledge and experiences with one another so that together, united- we are better.
One last thing for the moment- I'd love for our collective community to be a force to be recognized by FIRST. Our small voices joined to one huge voice- oh yea, people will listen.
OK, I'm done for now but I do want to tell all people willing (not just interested) to start this community to contact me. I plan to have an Internet meeting probably in an AOL/IM chat room on Friday. My screen name on AIM is JabzX. I need some input about the time so that it doesn't conflict with anyone's schedule. If your interested and not yet sure in committing yourself to this project, talk to me. If you know people who would like to help- talk to them then talk to me :).
This is a community for 3d artists, animators, models, people whole like to do the materials, ect. I'd prefer it if all in the creation of this community has at least some experience in a CAD program or a very strong interest in the likes.
Ok- I'm tired I'll post later on-

I would join if I was a junior, but I'm graduating this year, and animation probably isnt the career for me, so I dont think I'll join. However, one thing that I saw an animation forum do is little competitions. For instance, one would post a picture(whether a photo or hand drawn, it could be anything), and it would be everyone else's job to model it/recreate the picture in 3d. I tried starting something like that here actually around the time school started but it kind of failed miserably, suneet was the only one to do it i think(although his was pretty cool). If you want to check it out just look way back in the animation forum archives or something. I just thought this is a cool way for people to improve their skills as the point of the competition would not really be to show off your skill it would be for people to critique your work and give you tips as to how to improve it.

We'll probably do that, thanks for the idea.
I you like to make graphic art, I'd recommend joining, even if you're graduating, you can probably teach others. If it's not for you, thats coo too, I wish you luck on your path.

Sounds good to me!
Yeah..heh, i think we've all had similar ideas that juss never get off the ground. If anyone wants to work on it, and if anyone else can find a webhost willing to donate, I kinda think it would be awesome to have our own site, just for FIRST animators. If we could do this, it would be awesome to have people upload thier .max files, photos they took for materials, and anything else. Maybe even start some of our own tutorials in the offseason. If anyone wants to work on this, I'd be willing to work on it. I think if we could get a good ASP webhost, we could do some really cool stuff, using databases and what not (yeah...who here can tell that after animation was done, I was drafted to SOAP...).
Okay..those are my thoughts at the moment...::shrugs:: nonetheless, Im in for whatever! If we all want to keep going with animation, we gotta band together :D . So lemme know how I can help!
Ok, so I have:

Trashed: The meeting is at 11 EST, GLR team party ends at 7:30.
Being that you live in canton (15 min from Ypsi) I think you'll be able to make it home in time. Unless your team is doing something else.
I'll try to attend the meeting, but I dont know if my team is doing something post-party. I assume if we do that'll be over by 9 or 9:30 which is still a decent amount of time for me to get home.
If I'm not there.. don't be too surprised, I'll try though.

This community is mainly for the development of FIRST's 3d artists. Older experienced teammates are encouraged to join to share their knowledge with others. If you are a senior or above (including mentors) and have max/CADing skills at or above advanced, you would be a great addition to this community. People can also help with resources if they want to help but can't contribute with experience (ie. hosting, software, money, ect., or just plain advertising). Anyone associated with a FIRST team and has a great desire to learn 3d software is the prime candidate to join. Anyone can contribute. If you can only contribute a little bit, let me know so I don't nag you to do other things. :)
Sounds like a great idea. I'll be glad to join. My AIM is UserNo3x19
Actually i am already working on my first tutorial/guide. Not sure when it will be done, but there is already some decent progress

Looks like quite a strong force to start off with. Let me remind everyone, this list is of more than just members, it's of those that are committed to creating this community from the ground up- a kingdom in the making :)
If you just wanted to join but can't really contribute, let me know. I don't want to burden you with more stress.
Dag, I have 2 posts in a row- Oh well.
I was just thinking about how the people who do the CAD and/or Inventor work hardly get the credit they deserve.
Our community should do more to help these artists too. I mean, their work is hardly ever seen outside of their school. I'd like to provide a nice place were the pros could show off their work and get the respect they deserve and the beginners get the help from the skilled telling what they need to do better. Everyone's happy.
Well, thinking about it- I'd like the same for the texture makers, modelers, and animators. Well, yea, of course- but I really want to include the CAD/ Inventor people, they need it more than we do in my opinion. I think that the 3d animating software is more popular than the CADing software, so it maybe harder to find good sources of information. I could just be blinded my by passion though.
sorry that I missed the online meeting on tuesday....but are we thinking of making a web page to support this? In addition, how bout we make a thing like first cad library and have an unlimited supply of robot parts, for any team to use. If there is any important ideas that come up...if someone could email me cause I am rarely online at all in the night. thanks

The meeting was pretty much deciding that Friday was a good time to have the next meeting.
Both the website and the file library are pretty much a given in what we are going to do. It make take a little bit of time to get both up and running but that plus any other ideas we have are going to be discussed on Friday.

On a side note, (I don't have easy access to the internet, so I usually with miss these online meetings, let em know what happens through my email or something, and is it allright if I write a tutorial.... I was thinking of materialing for realism or something like that.
Ok everyone, it seems as though the community will be up for everyone to see very soon. All interested in helping with the website, contact me.
The next meeting will be this Fri. at 11pm (est). Get all your ideas and such ready.
I'd like those of you who want to do tutorials to start now.
Make sure I know you and what you want to do to help out, I don't want to miss anyone.
I'd like everyone who can to get AIM or at least e-mail me if you need to ask/tell me something. The site will be created soon and we should have a place (forum) to communicate and to deliver information that way.
OH- one more thing. A name, we need a name for this community. Try to think of some between now and Friday. That will be a day of many decisions- make sure you can be there.
This thing is about to take off...:)

Also known as F.I.R.S.T. G.A.
or possibly just "For Inspiration and Recognition of Graphic Artists" lol um.. aka F.I.R.G.A.? lol I think the first one is better.

F.I.R.S.T.’s GIGA - Generations Inspiring Graphic Artists
F.I.R.S.T.’s TARGA - The Advancement and Recognition of Graphic Arts
F.I.R.S.T.’s DIVA - Drawing Inspiration for Visual Artists
RECA - Recognizing Emergent Computer Artists
Keep the ideas coming, many of them are good.
If your are not able to attend this Friday's meeting, please let me know what you wanted to contribute to this community. I'd also like a few name ideas from you to be decided on for Friday.
We don't have to have FIRST in the name; it could be an acronym; it doesn't have to be. The name could be made up long as it's coo.
Thanks peeps-

RECA - Recognizing Emergent Computer Artists I like TARGA though I think I like it better as ARGA (without the "the"). I also tend to want to stay away from having FIRST in the title. We can always include it in our mission statement but Haveing an acronym in an acronym is a bit much I think.

You know just find a word that you like first...then put something to the letters....that is how things like F.R.O.G. and such got started. also, I think it would be good if I were to join. It sounds like a great plan and I can definitely do CAD. I am still learning Inventor and 3DS MAX though. I have a web site too with a friend.......www.rpgwelt.com
it is only 8.75 a year. the only really expensive part will be getting a server. the free ones break down....a lot......there are tons of them but none are very reliable. still it is better than paying the huge prices for a server with not much space.

I'm just reminding all who check the boards that there's a meeting today at 11 (est). It'll be on-line. I hope everyone who wants to participate and can come to do so.
Thanks-
Well, this last meeting was mostly focused on a name and the site/money for hosting.
The majority of everyone seemed to like The G-3D Project or G-3d: The Guild for 3D Design/Development. So thats the name so far unless we vote and change it later.
I'd like everyone to help look for a good (free) server. We probably have it under control server wise but if everyone looks, we might be able to find a better deal.
I'll probably talk about our next meeting (same day and time) later on; I'm quite tired. Start to work on your contributions to this "guild." You will probably get to talk with others in your group to see how they are doing things to get a better understanding on were we are.
It's still not too late to join us. If want to help, contact me.

Well, peeps, if you don't already know, we need a logo for our guild, so we are having a contest to see who can make the best logo. You have until next meeting (this Fri.) to create a picture preferably in .jpg form. Your imagination is your only limit.
Good luck to you.

image dimensions and file size limitations? just os we get the most time put into coolerthings that would work with a site. someone might make a hella-cool logo at 800x600 that is 700kb which just wouldn't work for the standard user. so what should the sandard be?
There are no set limitations, but I wouldn't recommend something so large, I believe we're thinking of something small and could go in the top corner of our site. I'd try to make something as small as a signature picture.

So, is the meeting still tonight?
Yes, it is- it'll be relatively short yet important. We will discuss the site, different aspects of content, and subdivide into smaller sections to disperse the responsibility.
Well, I guess the meeting was shorter than expected. Short as in didn't happen. Less than a handful showed up; where was everyone? Please e-mail/IM me what the deal is. Dag, I wasn't expecting more than 80% of the team not to show up to this meeting. Not showing up hurts us all. Hey Jabzx,
I'd really love to help more with this whole G-3d thing. Ive even been working on logo design and what not. Problem is that we're still in competition season and this is just no way to get things done. I personally will most likely be the co-driver for 108 at nationals and I'm spending a lot of time doing last minute things for the robot. I do electrical and mechanical work, along with software. Im sure there are other animators that are in the same boat as me. I think we should hold another introduction meeting just after nationals, get everyone on board the plan fresh and with no responibilites to robotics. Fridays are a good day, except when your halfway across the country for a regional, your transmission's still not working, and the LCD you just got for your driver interface has no software interface yet. Sooo all im trying to say is please take this into consideration. We may be animators here, but most of us have other responsibilites when animation's deadline isn't riding at us like a freight train.
Sorry if this sounds kinda on the mad-tone...Im juss kinda mad I missed the first meeting because I was at UCF and then missed the second one because of chicago. ::Shrugs:: It happens, i'd juss like to help more.
I see your point there. It's just that not many people told me ahead of time that they weren't going to make it. If I know quorum won't be met, I call the meeting off instead of wasting other's time. Friday nights are quite valuable. I'd hate for people to sacrifice thier time were they could be doing something else for nothing because only two people come to the meeting...
Are there any objections to this coming Friday's meeting (11 est.)?
If so, please contact me.

Some of the members of G-3D met tonight to discuss some various issues. Below are some of the main objectives/points that we came up with.
1) We want to have the Official Site up by June. This doesn't necessarily mean great quality, but we want something to be up and running. In addition to this, we still need a host. We need a host soon, very soon. Think of hosts and we'll discuss this in next week's meeting.
2) If there are people only interested in developing tutorials/content for the site, start working on that now. It will be good to have a nice amount of material on the site when it is up.
3) We need to get our name out! Any of the memebers of this community going to FIRST events such as regionals, off-season competitions, whatever - we need to get our name out. I hope to have a flyer made up soon.
4) We still need a logo. Anyone intersted in making one, IM JabzX, or Evilstanley.
We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I believe this is very do-able and it will reward the FIRST community of Graphic Artists. Let's try to get that host thing settled and the site up soon :)
Ryan Dognaux
21-04-2003, 18:59
Even though JabzX will not be able to attend the next meeting, there will still be a G-3D meeting around 11 this Friday night. If you cannot attend IM me at "Evilstanley" and we can talk anytime.
That is correct, I won't be able to be in the next meeting, but I'd like for a few things to get done during this next meeting.
There's the temporary site in the making now (by Lev) that will be fainalized on Fri. It should be up and running on Saturday. So far geocities, I believe will be the host (don't quote me on that one). It is said to be linked to an EZboards forum to be able to better communicate with each other until the real site comes up.
I'd also like for everyone to pick a host or at least have a good idea of one. I've created the "host post" to help in the decision making:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20343
With that host desion comes the way to pay the host (that is, if the host charges)? It's good if that question is answered during the meeting. We probaly at least need to pay for a domain. Don't get out your pocketbooks :), just have a good idea of who to pay and how to pay for it.
With paying comes some sort of money issue... I'm not sure yet how to handle that, there are many possibilities yet... I guess I'll leave it up to you to figure out how the account (if there is one) will work. We don't need it finalized this week though, Just keep thinking about it.
I think it important for those that want to contribute to have some sort of defined duty. We need dedicated people to do their task be it site searching for our news section of our site, or tutorial creation.
You can have more than one position, but don't overwork yourself. Please, have a certain job or task in mind before the meeting on Fri.
With tutorial creation, it's preferable everyone knows what tutorials you are creating. I'd hate for there to be redundancy and a waste of time due to similar tutorials.
I believe our temporary site will be key for the organization in both roles and communication.
Ryan Dognaux is compiling a contact list of the creating members of the guild if you want to help out with the guild, contact either him or me and we'll be sure you are included. With that, if you have a teammate who want's to help but isn't on Chief Delphi, let me or Ryan know, we want them included too.
One more thing- the G-3d logo. I'd have it ready by Friday because I believe chances are, It will be on the site before the meeting is over.
:ahh: - Yup
Thanks to all of you for making this happen-

Thanks for all the compliments. Our animators, like many other teams, really put a lot of thought into the communication of our message.
As an Inventor designer, I also feel the lack of recognition for Animators and Inventor designers in FIRST. In the upcoming months, team 75 will be launching an online community for FIRST animators and inventor designers to promote, recognize and award exceptional animations/renders. Works wil be judged by both your peer animators/inventor designers as well as (hopefully) a panel of professionals. The lack of recognition for many animations at regionals and at championships is alarming; we need to encourage and reward all the animators and inventor designers whose work was left unnoticed. Besides giving out awards, we also plan to provide better ways to showcase these animations through television networks as well as securing an area of the pits at every regional to set up viewing booths (yes, with quality sound and screens) so that anyone can view these little animated wonders.
As Xavior mentioned, we need to start a sub-organization that caters to the needs of Animators and Inventor designers: mostly people who work hours upon hours behind the scenes.
In the upcoming months, I will be working with Autodesk's ADA (Autodesk Design Academy) program and I will lobby Autodesk support for our organization.
If it is impossible for Autodesk to better award/recognize all the great animations and are unwilling to make a greater effort, then I feel that we must be responsible for recognizing eachother and creating our own awards, prizes and ceremonies that we can present at regionals and/or championships. The fact is that most animators are involved in the autodesk animation competition because they truly love animating and wish to become better at it, not just for some autodesk award, but for a reward in the likeness of being "noticed" and complimented upon. What difference would it make for a team to win the "FIRST Animators award for exceptional 3d animation" compared to "Autodesk Visualization Award" if both winners were called down, their animations shown and given nice trophies?
As far as online resources go, the FIRST animators yahoo group has pretty much died off in terms of activity. CD boards are good for resources, but not properly suited for the needs of animators to post, rate eachother's animations and create custom tutorials.
If your team is interested in assisting team 75 in establishing this community, and wish to be involved in shaping the future of this organization, please send an email to:

question....I have got 2 tutorials about 90% done. One's about materialing a controller interface, and the other is just an advanced materialing one. Who do I send them to when I'm done? Also are we going to have a 'kit of parts' in 3ds format? I'd be able to help out with a couple things there. If possible we could devide up the kit of parts so that ecah person gets only like 1 or 2 things to model.

You can send them to me as default. I'll make sure they'll go were they got to go.
By the way peeps, we're still trying to get that contact list going
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=10
Trashed20's http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/ is a good start for posting I recommend all people wanting to join G-3d (not just the creators) to do so by signing up. We'll need your input for the forums. We're doing this all for you.
It'll be our temporary forum until we move.
About team 75, well, I don't know what to say to that. I think we need to communicate with then to see what and how they are doing it's good to keep in contact with others trying to do the same thing, maybe we'll merge or something...
- Thanks xavior06 for the quote, it's hard to keep up to date.
As everyone should know, the temporary site is up.
http://www.eccentrix.com/members/firstg3d/index.htm
It's screaming for input.
That's all I have to say for 2 day-
I did a logo design.
I recommend having the other members design a logo as well and chose the best one.
The please send your logos is here:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=6
But yea, there is a contest- everything's due Fri to be judged on during the next meeting.
Please register to the forum so you can have a say in what goes on.
Thanks-
It's nearing time for Friday's meeting. Just wanted to mention when you join the newer forum to reply to both
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=7
to define your role
and
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=10
to give your contact info which will make things more organized.

Unless a sudden emergencey pops up, then I'll be there.
I'm reminding everyone that the temporary site is up. We need your content. Please sign up for whatever tutorial you'd like to do in the new forums. It's the content of the site that will make people join our guild and then add to it. It all starts now...
If you want to contribute but just don't know how to make a tutorial, I'll make a tutorial on how to make a good tutorial as soon as my computer gets working :( .
Any other takers?
Also people, I'm going by the number of active people in the new form to base the current number of members we have in G-3D. If you want to join it's-
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/
Yeah, yeah, it's all over this thread. I'd like to have a good deal of content before summer starts.
We're in the last phases of getting this thing started. All we need is content and more members then let things fly.
I know some people are just waiting for the final site, but I say lets start small yet serious. I won't matter if we have a real host with a ".com" or ".org," if the spirit is in the temporary, thats all that matters... :)
I guess thats all I need to say for now.

i believe if we get autodesk's permission we will be working closely with them to create tutorials and workshops for both inventor and 3d max, im not sure how far everyone is on our team, but i will tell them to post an update here for you all, i believe we are still waiting to hear from autodesk though.
that site u guys are making looks pretty cool. functionality and content are important too, all in good time, look at CD.
l8r
We are in the content development stage so that means, less business right now. There doesn't need to be a meeting today or next Friday unless content isn't being created. I'll notify everyone next Wednesday but you could probably know by looking at the site if we don't have enough content.
It seems like a high goal but I'd like to be able to have a number of new tutorials for the site every week. You can claim your tutorial/content at:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=16
Like I said, I'd like tutorials to be generated rather quickly, but don't be rushed, quality is very important. I'll see by who signs up to see what kind of shape we're in. Also please go to http://members.lycos.co.uk/g3dfirst/viewtopic.php?t=10 so that you can truly be considered a member.
I'll check up with some of you to make sure things are going smoothly.
Till then-
Peece and good luck with content creation.

Ok peeps, we need to see how everyone is doing. There'll be a meeting this Fri. at 11. If you can't attend, please communicate with me directly. Since the activities at school are dying down, it's time to get this site up and running smoothly. :)
I'll get in touch with you individually if there needs to be something done.

I have finished my first tutorial!!!
OK, I think this bring up a little problem. Who is going to upload all this info? I personaly think we should have a dynamic content website. (Look Here (http://www.phpnuke.org/))
Set aside, I have a ZIP ready to e-mail/IM to anybody I need to.
Nice dude :D ,
Well peeps- it's been a while before anything has happened but that was my fault, but I have things under control. I spread the workload among those who had other plans, and thus couldn't keep up with things.
Not to worry, I have time on my hands and had recently gotten control of the site and forum. So now, I'm trying to educate myself on how to to make everything work and look good. Bare with me a few days, you'll see changes (finally) soon. It's time for G-3D to wake up. Contact me if you have any good site/forum tutorials or info.
Thanks-
Well, I'm just letting everyone know that I've recreated the G-3D site. At the moment, I'm going to be in charge of it so that means more updates. The site is in flash which provides for easier changes and is more powerful than html. It's a bit more colorful than the older site too.
I'd like to know what everyone thinks.
Thanks-

I was wondering if this is still going on...
We have a site, we have a forum, all that's needed is committed members. Contact me if you're still in or want to join, you know the email and s/n. If enough people contact me, the meetings'll start up again. It'll be time to add the truly defining features of G-3d.
Thanks for your interest-

You know, the small contest I was talking about on another thread below this one might be a nice thing to have on your site. The best way to learn is to be challenged to making something each week. You'd also get a wide amount of topics.
Yea, I was thinking about having that and rewards for the winners, but I didn't think about using that to attract people to join in the first place until now, thanks-

I'd like to have a meeting on the 30th of this month. For all who has never done this but will like to help, please contact me. Also, if alot of people can't make Fri. we might move the meeting. We will also be using our forum a bit more to keep up with the changing plans so please begin to get into the habit of at least checking for updates in your busy lives. I'll try to remind thoes I know through Aim.

Shure I want to work with G-3D, but it might be somewhat limited during the build because I will be working on the bot.
I think we all are busy at this time. :)
Well, I encourage everyone to come to our fourm. It's been... upgraded. I'm ready to start seeing some new posts now that it is simple to see where things go. Also, not everything is geared to talking about the site and members. We have WIP and Q/A and more, the forum is screaming to be used. I feel we are coming close to... ChiefDelphi quality. :D
I have many posts to do on there but dag, it's 4:00... I needa sleep... Things I do for G-3D...

I'm pretty much new to this site and the program. That's why I was hoping to be able to get tips from the more experienced users. I'd like to get into the chat meetings but I'm definitely going to need a reminder of what time it's going to be at. My AIM is rodentrick. Let me know what's going on.

Hi,
This might be a stupid question, but do any of you guys know how to take the Inventor files from the Virtual Kit, and import them into Max 6? They only seem to have one common file that inventor can export and Max can import, and it doesn't do that great of a job.
Thanks
I'll join in this. I am a senior and planned on going into a 3d animation career.
AIM - KarnSG I'll goto any meeting as long as I don't have an away message up.
It's good that people would like to help. It's good for everyone to start posting. Since many are new, we might be helpfull in answering your questions. Since some of you are experienced, you will be helpfull in answering questions. :) I'd also hope to have art competitions and duels in the future, after FIRST (or before it ends), to keep our practice up.
About this meeting and meetings in general-

I forgot to mention to spread the word. The G-3D community works by people power, with out the people, it'll just fade agian... This is my senior year. I might not be able to bring it back again...

I don't know if anyone asked this before or not, but how do you put words/text into a 3ds max animation? I don't see any function given by the program to do so.

Never mind. I found the bloody thing. Why do they feel the need to hide such useful items?!? Anyways, whatever. Does anyone of any other functions that you need to sell an arm and leg to find? If so, let me know.

Who wouldn't be frustrated with a program that crashes with every driver ecsept software.
It does have some nice tools.

Can the mods please put the thread "G-3D" in place of this post if its not too much trouble?

Umm, I have an idea for reviving this thing.
What we need is a challenge: From summer to fall, participants must work on creating photorealistic human(s), fully animatable!
What do you'll think?
That's pretty hard. Trust me, we've built two fully animated humans the past 2 years, and it takes up about 50% of the precious time you have during the season. This would be really difficult for rookie teams, too. Maybe something less specific?
I've heard talk of other summer programs that wanted to go on in order to provide practice for new artists. If you are interested in participating, please contact me (not on this thread) so I can get a number of participants.
The fully animated human sounds like quite a task- do you know a good teacher who is willing to take their time out of the summer to teach?
I think summer class(es) will be a great idea, if it's planned correctly.
If there are other willing teachers, please contact me also, I might be able to work something out...

On other matters- is there anyone who knows how phpbb works?
I'd really like to get our old forum back:
- On the fixing of the new member sign up, there was a programming error.
- I've backed up the information on to my computer and reinstalled phpbb but it will not treat the backup file correctly.
