View Full Version : Thoughts on the food

Give me your thoughts on the food; both meal ticket and what was available to puchase at the Reliant Stadium.

I personally thought the food stunk, it was over priced at Reliant Stadium. I could not believe they wanted $5.50 for a small personal pan pizza. My parents and brother had ice cream with M&Ms and paid $18.00 for the 3 cups. Students cannot afford to pay football fan prices. I missed my Thursday lunch at the Astrodome because they closed before I could get there after the matches. On Friday my chicken sandwich was overcooked and my friend's was undercooked. The food at AstroWorld was not that good either. They had burnt fried chicken and rubbery hot dogs. Also where was the vegetarian meals for those who don't eat meat. Better luck next year.:)

I can't believe no one else replied to this, I was sure that I wasn't the only one who hated the wristband and almost lost every tag in order an hour before lunch. I actually think losing a tag was an act of god so I wouldn't get sick from some of the food. Disney was much better food wise, but even at disney the price was astounding without the food tickets.

The food was the same as it was at all the regionals. Overpriced.
I did enjoy the variety. The Smoothies were delicious as was the ice cream. $4.95 for 4 Krispy Kreames:eek: ! Somebody call the cops!!!

i thought the food was decent especially compared to what i remembered at the team party 2 years ago in epcot.

i folded the tags in and didnt lose any, astroworld was eh, foodwise and i agree everything was overpriced, but i came prepared for that, we went out for dinner and got some good food when we could. i thoguht the team party food was great, hotdogs looked weird but tasted fine. chicken was dry but tasted alright.

i didnt expect excellent food for a couple thousand people. but i loved the free ice cream!

vegetarian thing was kinda big prob. my friend doesnt eat meat and he got screwed alot.

no kidding... A block away from our hotel (the Marriot on the Medical Center) was a Popa John's - One large one topping for $6.50! Only a dollar more! Yea, we had pizza just about every night as soon as we got back to the rooms becasue we were all starving even after eatting those meals at the stadium - which you had to be starving to eat in the first place.

Im still in shock at the price for a soda.... I mean, $3.75 for what can normally be had at $1 for a profit? I nearly bought four bottles of soda at our hotel just in spite :)

Needless to say, the two soda machines with the 50 cent cans saw plenty of action on Friday (all sold out!? NOO!)

I have a few comments:

I ended up losing one of the tickets. It probably tore off while I was carrying or fixing the robot. The paper coupons of the past worked much better. In terms of variety and value the Disney prepaid meals were by far superior.

I could not believe it on Friday when I found out the prepaid service had closed at 2 PM. I settled on buying a hot dog and water for $5. It was either this, a pizza, or nachos ($6.50). Later that day, after the conclusion of our matches, I returned to the Astrodome, hoping to buy some water. I discovered that the vendors had closed at 4:30 (or was it 5:00?). By this time, I was feeling quite dehydrated from making 6 round trips pulling the robot between venues. I found an Astrodome employee and told him I was more that willing to pay double for the water, but there was nobody to sell it to me. He took pity on me, and insisted on giving bottle for free.

I stayed at the pits until closing time, two hours later. FIRST is a very gratifying, yet physically draining experience. It was a long day, and I left feeling very hungry and weak. From those that I have spoken to, many people would appreciate it if at least one concession stayed open for the entire day, to accommodate those too busy to eat during peak hours.

It was hardly easier to find food in downtown Houston (in the neighbourhood of the Hyatt). McDonald's closed at 7, and Subway closed at 8, after running out of bread at about 7:40.

Well, first of all, I am thankful that there was food, but the free food did suck. The chicken was bland. Very few condiments. Texture wasn't too great. One day (I think Friday) they served fish! I was ready to hurl. The drink selection was nice. Didn't eat a hot dog. The cheese pizza was proally' the best thing there in my opinion.

I didn't even eat the other food from the stadium. WAY too much money. $3.75 for a 20 oz!?!? $5 for 4 Krispy Kreames?!?! I just ate what I could of the free food, than ate Domino's Pizza or Denny's! (o, yea, doritos chips also!!)

In general, food wise, (at the competition) it sucked. I thought FIRST could do better...

In addition to the bad lunches (and team dinner which looked like leftovers from the lunches), the breakfast at the Rennaisance was disapointing. The only day with good food there was sat. morning, but we were rushing to get to the astrodome, so i couldn't eat much.

Oh well, dinners (other than the team dinner) were good....

hey you guys/girls. we all know the food sucked, even though i did take part in eating it. LOLS. =P come on? I was hungry. anyways, i thought instead they should of had the pre paid meals at the reliant stadium and the astrodome so that people wouldnt have to take LONG walks here and there. dont you think? but, they did open the stands there and yes, some of my team member bought their food instead of walking all over there for free food. =P

i voulenteered so the food i had was awsome, but i heard the food that everyone else got was really bad and i know people who got sick from it, so that says enough for me. Yay to really good food and not needing a wristband tag for it!

I will agree that the food situation at the Nationals left a lot to be desired. Our hotel offered only one breakfast selection for the package (scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuit, potatoes) along with a choice of juice or coffee or tea. Five days of that was boring, and not nutritious. We purchased fruit at a nearby grocery store to eat at the competition.

I have a food allergy that normally is not an issue since I am not a picky eater. However, the lack of food choices made it difficult to eat the prepaid meals. I attempted several times to find out what was to be offered the following day so that I could purchase food ahead of time and bring it with me, but no one could tell me what was going to be on the menu, let alone if it contained the item I am allergic to. The fish, while a nice thought for those who do not eat meat on Fridays during Lent, was burnt, cold and inedible.

My suggestions:
*Better food quality (prepare cold items - ie sandwiches and salads and fruits - for mass consumption and the fear of food illness will be lessened)
*More variety (OK to offer the standard "fast food" stuff if nutritious alternatives are also offered)
*Offered at several locations (have a location close to the pits for those who are working there, and other locations close to the competition arenas)
*Work with vendors to keep prices to a minimum to accomodate those who do not purchase the package.

Yea the food definitely was "insatiable" When I first got to houston, i had no idea about the free food until our moderator gave us those bracelets, which didn't workout quite well. most of the tabs fell off, plus i didn't know it wasn't removable. (haha, i haven't even gotten around to remove it yet) i bet my friend i'll keep it on until the end of spring break. but anyway, this was my food check list

thursday the wannabe KFC, what was up with that? it was WAY to salty.
friday's meal, yea, so i'm catholic, had to resort to the Filet, ackk.. McDonald's could do better.
saturday, ok, so hotdogs were decent. i spend some of my time looking for polish, but they're far more expensive. ugh..yeah i agree about the team dinner, it did look like leftovers.

now. you're probably wondering why i never ate the pizza, well it's cuz i'm lactose intolerant. haha, i but i couldn't help myself so i bought some dippin' dots cuz i've never tried them. i never bought any other food from the venue except for 2 bags of cotton candy.

hotel food at the hyatt was good, but breakfast was only served from 5-7am. first day i had to run down in my nighties cuz i only had 5 minutes left... it was a bit hard adjusting to texas time. my friends and i ended up buying food at the starbucks instead.

overall id say the free food (ie. wristbands and astroworld) sorta sucked taste wise, and wasnt cooked very good

however, purchased food was expensive but good(ie dip n dots, popcorn

Well, to add to that... $6.50 for nachos?? no, wait, for CHIPS & CHEESE???????

Maybe we can e-mail FIRST about it..........

Actually, I thought the food was good for an event of this size. The pizza was good on the first day, the chicken/fish sandwiches weren't very tasty but at least they had some nutrition, and the hamburgers/hotdogs were just fine.

Breakfast at the Radisson, on the other hand, was consistently awful.

I didn't go to the team party (c'mon...when has the food there ever been good???) so I can't comment on that, but all in all I found the arrangements to be more than adequate.

Plus, my team bought and filled a cooler with soda and water so we didn't have to pay ridiculous prices ($3.25 for a 20oz coke?) to stay hydrated.

the food did suck at the comp and the park, I also though it was outrageous that it was $3.75 for a coke the only good thing was the fact that if by some chance you didn't loose you wrist band and the tabs you got some kind of free food and a drink. the food at the team party sucked, i didn't touch the hot dogs and once i was able to break up the chicken i lost my desire to eat. I think the only good thing that came out of the prices is I will never complain about a $1.25 drink again or $9.99 for a large pizza.

The vegetarian thing was definitely a problem for some. Our coach is vegetarian, and so she had to eat just a bag of chips two days in a row because the stadium people were inconsiderate. I felt really sorry for her...

lots of stuff from the autodesk meeting.. like 15 cans of soda, and like 20 bags of chips and stuff 4 the hotel!!

my team definetly got screwed on the whole food situation
we stayed at the Holiday in Astrodome, which as said before, had the same thing every morning and it was gross in my opinion, from not eating the breakfast at the hotel, i went to the pits and proceeded to drink the masses of mountain dew [my team bought about 100 leiters at the local "Fiesta"] and either stayed on that till dinner or ate some krispy kreme in despiration for food
i actually couldn't find the pre-paid concessions on thursday, so i bought some pizza, then decided it was WAY to much, luckily mp parents were great and knowing food prices from disney last year [they went] they gave me plenty of food money plus some spending money, although by the end i didn't have much spending money, our team's papa john's & dew habit got the best of me
also, the dinners were kinda of gross, my team generally ended up going back to the hotel and ordering papa john's, no matter what the time [dew + pizza @ 11PM=up until 3 30 AM, esp not good when you wake up at 6 30 AM]
the food at astroworld, the stuff your paid for, was considerably better than anything available in Reliant Park, except the free meal on saturday night
my friend is a vegetarian along with some of you guys, and had GREAT difficulty finding something to eat, i think he ended up eating ice cream sandwiches and doritos, but then he found out that the baked bean had no meat and chowed down on those in a hot dog bun
i didn't eat the meat there either, it just looked bad, and what was the other stuff, egg salad? i couldn't tell and just opted not to eat that was well
overall i think it was possibly the most unhealthy competition for my team ever, especially considering the large amounts of mountain dew consumed [we were the team with the GIANT mt. dew bottle that was full at the begining of the say and empty by 9 AM and we took our lunch break to go get more bottles
i have to say, by about 7 PM friday, i had the most odd desire for a piece of fruit, and i didn't really get some until i got home.....

I agree with many of you. The lunches and overall food in the stadium is something i wouldn't feed livestock with. The pizza on the first days was disgusting. It felt like bread covered with some pepperoni and a 1 inch layer of generic cheese. I hate Papa John for doing that to us. The chicken sandwich the next day was pretty horrible as well. I ate half of it and felt like throwing the other half in someone's face (probably Papa John's). The hot dog on the saturday was something i managed to finish without throwing up. The only good thing were the drinks that came with the lunches. The rest of the food in the dome was too expensive and unattractive to even consider buying.

About the hotel. We stayed at the Hyatt downtown and the food there was OK. We went to Hard Rock Cafe one night and ate a good meal there, but that's about it.

I disliked the lack of a vegetarian option, both at the team thing, and at the stadium. A good vegetarian option should have been provided.

As a side note, two teammates, and myself went to the local Fiesta (meeting Team 25, coincidentally) and bought $52.00 worth of soda, and Hot Pockets. I wound up drinking about 7 sodas a night - our mini-fridge had a total of 36 soda cans and bottles. :D It served as a substitute for lunch, which was terrible. The FIRST water was a plus, though.:D

24 cans for 5 bucks at Fiesta. We also loaded up on 20 oz bottles of Pipp, which wakes you up in the morning better than an ice cold shower. Too bad they don't sell it in Jersey though.

Our team didn't pay for the FIRST package and definitely didn't want to pay for the outragous park prices. Instead, we had one of our adult mentors travel to a local grocery store each day and buy some lunch. This worked out great and only cost each person around $1.50 per meal. (That is if you don't mind Mt. Dew and Ham and Cheese Sandwiches.)

Yea.. This really beat me up, since I'm what you would call a Eater.

I mean, comeon.. At Disney you could get a delicious breakfast and then eat at any restaraunt you wanted in Epcot.. Then back at the hotels there was ample food sources.

But at Houston I basically starved myself the first few days cuz I'm not going to pay 15 bucks for a real meal. Heck, I couldn't even go to a nearby restaraunt at the hotel. I lived on Doritos and Capri-Sun for three days. My suitcase was considerably lighter by the end of nat's. Epcot, which I had become bored of, (can you believe that) now seems like heaven to me..

The biggest problem we had was not with food at the Reliant center, but at our hotel (the Doubletree). A large chunk of the team arrived Thursday night at around 8:00, and went to try and find food. While there were several restaurants withing walking distance of the hotel, they all had closed at 8:00. According to the concierge, there was a McDonalds a few miles away that didn't close until 8:30, so we took a van there, only to find it closed at 8:20. We cruised around a bit before returning to the hotel hungry. Finally, we asked the concierge if there was any food place open past 8, and he told us that only the Hard Rock Cafe was. I didn't personally go, but from what I heard, the food there was very overpriced and undertasty. At Disney, there were literally dozens of good restaurants open late within a couple of blocks of the Hotel, but apparently Houston shuts down at 8pm.

As the more than 20 teams that stayed at the Radission know, the breakfast package there sucked. It consisted of runny scrambled eggs and badly cooked poor cut bacon. The biscuit and gravy was good for the first two days but they got stale after that. One day they added cereal which was a good move, the pancake addition was not. I should have just chugged the syrup instead of eating it off of cardboard disks. UD Dining Hall seems like the Four Seasons after that crap.

The Prepaid lunches were also bad. What was worse was the $4.75 soda. I just kept a first water bottle on me and filled it up at the stadium. At that soda price they should at least allow u to bring ur own sodas like in the picnic area at Epcot.

Well, at least they attempted to give you hot food. At the hyatt, there was never any pretense of that. All we got was some cereal and a muffin. And the cereal selection was awfully limited some days.

Heres an interesting story: It was our last match of the day, and I was pretty dang thirsty. We had a long time until we acutally had to play, so I decided to go up to the stands and get a pop. To my horror, the cash register said $3.75! I dont know if it was by an act of god, or what, but at just that moment, the cash register jammed, and all 3 people working there were having no sucess opening it. Eventually the guy running the place gave me my money back and the pop for free. I'm a cheapskate, so I was overjoyed that I didnt have to waste my money in this regard.

confirmed...............

I was almost looking forward to the Radisson breakfasts because we stayed at the Radisson at Chesapeake and the food wasn't too bad although the prices were (9$). The powdered eggs at the Radisson weren't so bad......... after I poured salt & pepper all over them although the texture was disgusting. The biscuits were pretty bad and the pancakes were at least 3 months old.

I wish there had been more options. Every breakfast at the Ramada consisted of a Burrito, muffin thing, yogurt, a granola bar, and some fruit. By Sunday, the burritos were getting kinda nasty. I didn't like the choice of lunches either; at epcot there was a variety-something houston lacked. I thought the Astroworld food was pretty good- just expensive.

There was not much, but a good amount of food avaible at the hotel. For the breakfest anyway we had toast, bagels, muffins, bannas, apples, 4 types of cereal, milk, coffee, and joice. For other items to eat or just indulge we had candy, popcorn, soup, gatorade, ice cream, cheif boradee stuff, and chips. So we had some food but not enough to last us through the night, or some mornings.

Nothing beats the Ramadas Breakfast burritos by sat morning i was going wihtout breakfast. It was not good tasting at all Epcot was much better in all food respects it gave you so many options even for the free food it was much better something needs to be done for next year for sure or just return to epcot

After reading through all of these postings, I have one simple question.

Where are all of those opinionated people who were screaming for a new venue because EPCOT was sooooo expensive?

I think all of those who were complaining last year about the cost of food at EPCOT owe Disney and FIRST a huge apology.

I am now officially off of my soapbox.

Team238-aholic
15-04-2003, 23:40
hey...not that i'm defending the high food prices...but FIRST has no control over the prices of food...its the stadium and what their company makes them charge for food....

I work at the Verizon Wireless...where BAE was held...and I know how the food issue works...Aramark(the food company) doesn't allow us to change the price of the food for events...there for, everything was still extremely expensive....

you just gotta suck it up and deal....

Aaron Knight
16-04-2003, 00:36
Never thought I would say this, but I think I'm glad our team couldn't afford the FIRST packages. We had the option of going anywhere we wanted whenever we wanted. Our motel was just down the road, there was fast food everywhere and anything we could possibly want without paying FIRST's package price or Reliant Stadium's inflated prices. Sure, staying at a Motel 6 (ugh) was a little rough, but we had a lot more freedom in everything else from what I'm hearing. Albeit I am a little sick of fast food - but I was able to get my Whataburger fix.......

As for the price, what can you expect? just think of normal prices doubled and you'll get your theme park and football stadium prices.

I was lucky in that for most meals while at the competition site, I had very good catered food provided in payment for my 2 1/2 days of volunteer time. I did, however, experience the prepaid and team party food.

My conclusion:

The ice cream at the team party was good. Otherwise, I'd say the "s" word description frequently used in this thread is right on target. No... On second thought, the food wasn't that good.

Last year we were given coupons that we could use for breakfast and coupons that we could use for lunch (they didn't have dates on them either--if you wanted two lunches one day, you could have done it). There was a big concession booth that you would line up at (it got pretty crowded around lunch time). You had a lot of choice, hot dog, hamburger, sandwhich, etc. etc. then you could also get a cookie or a bag of chips, then a drink. For breakfast you could get eggs, sausage, pancakes, waffles, then you could get an apple, banana, etc. and then your choice of two drinks. There are other things you could have gotten, but the above is what I can remember offhand. They even had a special line for Kosher food, so they made sure everyone had good food choices. I believe some people even went in Epcot and could use their tickets at certain restaraunts in the park.

Oh yeah--you could use your breakfast coupon either at Disney, or if you woke up early enough, at the hotel. If you used it at the hotel, you got the standard Disney hotel breakfast. And let me tell you, the standard Disney hotel breakfast (at least where we stayed) is very, very good.

Hey Kit, i know what you mean, if my memory serves me right you were on the Archimedies field and i volunteered with you and we joked about on Friday how strange the volunteers catering was, on friday for all you who want to know for lunch we had cajun corn/vegitable meledy, basil marinated chicken with a basil sauce, spiced rice, asian noodles, chocolate moose cake, cans of soda and bottles of water, plus some other stuff i cant remember now... Now i know why i volunteered, it was for real food and more fun.

P.S.~ Yes i did eat on Thursday the crap they tried to call chicken for lunch and i got sick that night, i wasnt sure friday morning if i was going to beable to walk for that day.

Our team (213) stayed at the Houston Hilton Plaza. It was a beautiful hotel, (our kids all had suites with 2 bathrooms, living rooms and bedroom w/ 2 beds). However the food there was HORRIBLE!! Day 1 consisted of runny scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. Day 2 was pancakes and sausage (over cooked!) and day 3 was cereal and and apple or banana. Don't even get me started on the prepaid food. My one question is this: Would Woody and Dean eat the same food we were subjected to in Houston? Answer NO, they had VIP catered meals (of which we all paid for) I think next year, Dean and Woody should be required to eat the same food we have to eat, then maybe we'll get something decent to eat!
My only hope is that they have learned what was wrong this year and can fix it for next year. If you take out the food situation, and the distance from the pits to the playing field, then it was really not a bad place to hold the competition.

Runny powdered eggs, salty home fries, under ripe fruit and tea, coffee and OJ! No soda machines on any floor and the mall (no scratch that the city of housten) shuts down at 8:30.

Hehe. I never had any problem getting food - I'm a light eater anyway and we went out relatively early for team dinners - but the rest of my team found this little dollar grocery store a few blocks from the Hyatt that was open up until midnight or so and loaded up on snacks and drinks.

The downside was that if you stood outside the place you got asked for cigarretes or marijuana, but the prices were astounding. ;)

Ahem, need I ask? The food..... or the marijuana?

i haven't read through this all, so i don't know if someone already said this, but they did have options for non-meat meals....although you had to ask the right person. one woman was a real you-know-what when i asked about it, so i asked the guy in the khaki shirt that was walking around the food area with the walkie talkie....he was real nice about it...veggie spring rolls or a fruit bowl, plus an extra bag of chips. and that was actually pretty good.

Yeah, my food experience also was terrible.
I loved Epcot. The free meals were decent and they gave you sooo much free food and never once did I have to worry about throwing it all up.
Well... first off, I hated the wrist band things. I didn't even use it, not to mention mine broke and I used a hair elastic to hold it on...
You've all heard about the Radisson meals by now. Everything came out of a box and it was disgusting. Friday I tried to get a chicken sandwich and I confused it with the fish. It was rubbery and soggy so I threw it away.
Saturday they had those hotdog thingies. If you covered it with a lot of ketchup it was edible. But then they served it again at the team party... I have a bad stomach with hotdogs as it is. I only took two bites of my hotdog cuz somehow, I was no longer hungry after what I saw foodwise. (surprising since I didn't eat anything anyway!) Yeah, well I ended up throwing all of it up in a toilet at the park!!!!!
If they for some ungodly reason choose to hold the event there next year, let's see if they can't get edible if not nutritious food. I miss Disney :(

are you serious???
you mean i didn't eat for 3 days for no reason??
it made me really upset that they didn't have veggie food as an option,
but b/c of religious reasons i couldn't eat meat on Thurs.
and i wasn't supposed to on Fri. but i had to have the sandwich,
and then sat. it was an all beef hot dog -- once again, against my religion -- that's on thing I fallow strictly -- no beef,
so I had to live off of water the whole time!
I'm very upset w/ FIRST on this:mad:

Well there were many resteruants in the surrounding area, so anyone could have had atleast dinner. I know we went to Olive Garden, and i think denny's. Anyway, no one really should have starved. All in all food around the two stadiums was good. I will vouch for that.

Well the Fiesta might of had pb&j but if you wanted a two liter of Dew you would have had to go somewhere else. Since R.A.G.E. got there two days early we went and cleaned the store of two liter bottles of Dew they only had about fifty bottles there.

My hotel room of 3 people had 48 cans of soda. I drank enough cherry coke and Pipp to glow in the dark.

Yeah that is 12 oz. cans try 40+ 2 liters in one room. I wish I had a pic. I will have to do some asking around. We also had two 10.3 liter bottles. AKA those soda bottle banks that you can get at toys r' us filled with dew.

hey john yeah i remember seeing that in the pits, someone near one of the pitchers mounds (near the t-shirt table) had one of the 10.3 banks full of dew, it was quite funny since he was drinking it with a straw that was as long as the bank.
