Now read my post,

Well...

Some, like myself, don't want to use their "real name" as their user name. Also, I enjoy haveing funny text (something else cool) for a user title instead of my real name. I guess I could put my name in my sig, but I think it would get lost there :)

SO...

Who would support adding a profile field (optional) for your real name? It would then be displayed in your posts by location, team name... (where ever brandon thinks it looks good :))

If you think that this is a stupid idea, feel free to say so too :p

I'll add that the addition of this field is little-to-no work, so I don't mind either way. I'll add it if enough people want it.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

sounds like a good idead to me....I know camtunkpa is my user name for everything and I like it that way, but I would also like to see real name profiles!

Well.. in addition to having the custom profile field for real names, the current row (in a post) that shows the username of the person who posted could be replaced with one that shows the information in the "Real Name" field. If a user does not enter a name in the Real Name field, then the username is placed in the field in place of the name.. the problem with this idea is that a few people have the same name, and some confusion would arise as to which person is the one posting (in some cases anyway).

It would be nice to see a name with a username instead having to relearn usernames as they change.

This sounds like a really good idea to me... even though my username is my name...

I would really like that, and I think Andy would agree it is a good compromise. As for me, WakeZero is my online persona... and I kind of like it :yikes:

One idea....

User name
Custom title
Avatar

then...
Real Name:
Registered:
...

Or, of course, the basic:
User name
Real name
Custom title
Avatar
...

There is almost no reason not to add it, and 20 million reasons to add it in the user's profile. Consider the people spoken ;).

People who already have their real name in their user name can consider it as a bonus line to put something cool there... Or not ;).

Absolutely. Our site (www.feds201.com) has a "real name" field that goes under the avatar, and it helps, especially when someone has a rather cryptic username.

I like that idea

Winged Globe I like your idea of putting it above the Registered: ...

I think that useing
Real Name: Andrew Schenk

Would be too long, and would just suggest using
Name: Andrew Schenk

I think that most people could figure out the difference between the Big Bold one at the top & then the Name: field below :)

I think that adding it is a good idea. When i visited my friend from another team last year, I thought it was kinda cool when someone from their team refered to me by my CD handle. I hear my name everyday and i really like the idea of having a nickname that you can control.

118 - team number(GO ROBONAUTS -118)
Tech - School that i goto(GUNz UP, Texas Tech), and kind sorta BIG Tech geek.

Chris - Name that too many people have
David - Since it is a first name also and people get confused whenever people ask for my last name and i tell them David, they keep asking for my first name

I may call it 'Alt. Name: ' or 'AKA', that way people w/names as their username can put their online name there. Those with the online name can put their real name there. It'll serve both people a purpose.

Can you do it so it appease under our names or avitar on each of our posts?

Brandon,
are we allowed to have you change our usernames again if this goes through?
Either way that would be cool, because the username gives people some personality that you dont get through reading their posts...

Brandon Martus

I'll be adding the 'AKA' field soon.

And Kevin: I'll still gladly change usernames (but only to real names, now). Just send me a PM or e-mail.

Cool!

The CogSquad site also uses this feature, and it has been a big help to tell between users.
