An E-mail from Ken Krieger of Western Region Robotics Forum
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey all you arteests out there!
WRRF Needs a logo! and you need $$$!
So how about we trade?
Here's the deal... Since WRRF is now incorporated, and we will be
generating all sorts of printed material, business cards, letterhead, etc... we need a symbol that is easily recognized as representing the WRRF.
For this we are willing to reward the creative efforts of the individual or group whose design we select by awarding them $100! REAL MONEY!
Details and requirements are as follows:
The Logo should:
-No more than one color + black
-SCALABLE! NOT bitmap (ie. vector/eps/illustrator/etc...)
-Do not indicate any state affiliation
(cuz we are for more than just CA)
- Do not incorporate the FIRST Logo
(cuz we don't have their permission to use it)
- Must contain the words "Western Region Robotics Forum"
- May include the letters "WRRF"
- Not too intricate... we'll be using these on Biz cards
and letterhead, as well as banners and posters.
- Interesting, creative, eyecatching, and distinctive!
(like the FIRST logo)
- Submitted as a PDF document for evaluation, final delivery in EPS
-$100 award for chosen design
-Due Aug 1
The chosen design will be displayed on all printed materials, and on banners at Cal Games, Workshops, and the FIRST Regional competition in San Jose. It will also be used on the WRRF Web Site.
Please spread the word. If a team works together and submits a design, we will write a check to your team for $100 if your design is chosen... If an individual works up a design which is chosen she or he will be awarded the $100.
Please submit all entries to logo@wrrf.org . This e-mail address will work up until the deadline. After that no new submissions will be accepted!
Thank you all very much in advance for your investment of time and effort into this project, and good luck!
Cheers,
ken

Come on, guys. I've seen lots of creative banners and logos all around FIRST. Are you saying you aren't even willing to spend a couple hours of your talent and come up with something good? What happen to all the artist and graphic designers who keep bragging about their work?
Consider this doing me a favor ;). I will buy you dinner if your logo win this design contest ;) ;) ;).
I'll give it a shot.
Can we submit more than one design?

Sure! Seeing there is no submittion right now...
It only matters that your logo get picked out of all the submitted ones, not how much you submit.

So I take it we don't have to be a member of a Western team to submit a design?
...and by "one color + black," we're counting white as a color? Or, is it black, white, and a single other color?
Danke.

Anyone can submit a logo, as long as its good ;).
How important is it that you get these as a PDF file? :P I don't have anything I'm aware of that converts files to Acrobat format.
...unless Photoshop does? I haven't checked. I'll check. If not, and if it is important, can anyone recommend software that'll export graphic files into acrobat format?

PDF is only for evaluation. If you cannot submit in pdf, that's fine. As long as it's something easy to open.
The final product, however, have to be "-SCALABLE! NOT bitmap (ie. vector/eps/illustrator/etc...)".

Hey all.
I asked Brandon to set up a section in the gallery for this contest.
Its inside the Misc section: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&galleryid=104&perrow=3&trows=4&quiet=verbose&direction=DESC&sort=date
Once you submitted a logo to the e-mail address, I will upload it to the gallery for everyone to see.

Will we be able to know who's designed each of the submitted logos, or will they be shown anonymously?

Unless the designer wants to be shown anonymously, I will put up the designer's name so they can be recognized for their work.
Whatever the designer wants. If they wish to remain nameless, just include that in the e-mail.
Ok.. what aspect of the WRRF is the logo attempting to put across? The introductory post in this thread said the logo must represent the WRRF, but thats really not enough, I think. Hrm, a better question: when someone sees the WRRF logo, what should they envision?
Furthermore, what is the WRRF's purpose for being? My ignorance in this area may or not be surprising, but although I have heard about the WRRF, I don't really know what its purpose is.

I'm no graphic designer, so I can't tell what one is supposed to think of when viewing the logo, but I can tell you about the WRRF, generally. It might help.
For the past few years, the WRRF has been a FIRST-team-volunteer-run organization for supporting FIRST teams. For the most part, it's been localized to the San Francisco Bay Area, but with so many recent developments, things will be changing a lot in the near future. Geographically, it will be increasing (the thought is from San Louis Obispo to Hawaii to Northern California), and it will be more focused towards educational systems, rather than supporting FIRST teams (make no mistake, though, FIRST is still one of, if not the most prominent "co-operative competitive project-based learning programs", so it will be the focus). It is also an officially incorperated non-profit organization, and will (with any luck) have some real financial backing in the very near future.
The WRRF's main points of interest are still the California Robot Games (CalGames), which will be held in mid-September, this year, and the pre-season workshops. These will, as far as I know, always be part of the WRRF.
So, basically, you're making a corperate logo. As was mentioned in the original message, this logo will be used for official documents and whatnot...
Uh, hope this helps... :/
I have been looking through the submissions here in CD's gallery, and I just wanted to point out something for people who may be interested in pursuing a logo design for the WRRF.
Remember that the criteria calls for black and a single other color, as well as a transparent background (as per Jim :) ). Blurs or motion trails or glow effects use more than the allowed colors and cannot be printed in many applications such as vinyl cutters and things.
Just a head's up.

These are the entries we have received so far! Some pretty good ones in
there. Where is yours?
You still have 4 days to design and submit your logo for consideration
as the official WRRF logo, to be used on all our business cards,

And remember, the author of the selected logo goes home with a crisp new
$100 bill! (Plus a celebrity dinner with Ken Leung!)
Here are the parameters....

(grey is same as black, so black, white, and ??? is OK)
-SCALABLE! NOT bitmap (ie. vector/eps/illustrator/etc...)
(Submitting a JPG or bitmap is OK for evaluation)
-Do not indicate any state affiliation
(cuz we are for more than just CA)
- Do not incorporate the FIRST Logo
(cuz we don't have their permission to use it)
- Should contain the words "Western Region Robotics Forum"
- May include the letters "WRRF"
- Not too intricate... we'll be using these on Biz cards
and letterhead, as well as banners and posters.
- Interesting, creative, eyecatching, and distinctive!
(like the FIRST logo)
- Submitted as a PDF, JPG, or bitmap document for evaluation,
final delivery in EPS, or ai
-$100 award for chosen design
-Due Aug 1
And keep checking the CD forum to see what's up!
Take it easy..

Hi everyone!
The time is up for the WRRF logo contest submission period. I would like to thank everyone for putting their time and effort into creating logo(s) for WRRF. You can see all the submissions in here:
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&galleryid=104&perrow=3&trows=4&quiet=verbose&direction=DESC&sort=date
There are LOTS of excellent submissions for this contest. A lot of them shows great use of color and shape, and creative symbols and objects. You can tell how much energy is putted into each of them :-). All the authors should be proud of what they did! Thanks again!
The WRRF board is going to meet this week and select the one logo that's best suited for the organization and its image. Everyone I've talked to in WRRF is eager to see which logo will be the winner. I am sure all of you can't wait neither. So stay tune! The winner of the WRRF logo contest will be announced really soon!

I was trying to send in the EPS for my first one and PDF and EPS for the second one and your email bounced it...

Jeff:
I expect sometime in the middle of the week, the decision will be made. Sorry if I sound uncertain, because I honestly don't know when the group have time to meet and choose a logo. All the board member are busy doing their own stuff for WRRF. I will personally notify all the authors when the decision is made. How does that sound?
DanielBCR:
When did you send the 2nd e-mail? I received a second e-mail from you, but I thought the logo looked exactly like the first time you sent it. If it is different, and you did sent it before 12 at midnight the morning of August 2nd, then send it to me again @ leung@wrrf.org . Thanks for doing this!

The preliminary meeting to decide a winning logo will be tomorrow. It's not certain that a winning logo will be chosen at this meeting, but it's very possible.

At the WRRF meeting yesterday, they told us ~2 weeks, and that it will almost certainly be announced by the next WRRF meeting on Sept 13.
So. . .
[awkward pause]
what did you all come up with?

Yes, it's been settled. It was used at Cal Games on signs/banners. I guess the WRRF folks have been too busy to post. The winner is a modified version of a submission... I think I'll leave it at that for now and let WRRF offical folks (or someone with an actual scan) make the announcement.

The PR folks are fine tuning the color and style of the logo, that is why we don't want any versions out there before everything is finalized. Look around the Cal Games thread for a link for a gallery. You might find a sneak preview in there ;-).

After a really really really long delay, WRRF has picked its official logo!

Congratulation to Brian Berke (aka WakeZero from 1011) for winning the WRRF logo Design Contest! His submissions (11.1 and 11.2) is a great inspiration to the new WRRF Logo.
I would like to thank everyone for making submissions for this contest. It was a really tough challenge to pick the best one out of the amazing submissions.
