I loved those wrenches... I play with mine all the time in class. And it boosted my physics grade as our teacher is obsessed with Stuyvesant :D.

But of course the coolest handouts are the BMS bags. Especially the FURY ones.

yeah... mentee editions are worth more than mentor editions... cause we never screwed up! ;)

::sigh:: you and your premiums... and the ones that "passed the test"

we had a big thing with buttons being "within desired parameters." if they weren't, we'd run em through the button-maker again VERTICALLY so they get bent and are unusable :D

Our team gave out many different things. Last year we just gave out buttons. Very Boring. This year we cranked it up many notches. We handed out boxes of usefull stuff to the judges, lil flashy thingies, buttons (of course), kazoos, and clappers. Hehe.

spam... now there's an idea. it's a good one i think. you know how during matches, you get hungry, but you're not always able to get food? well, with spam, you could keep food on you all the time and never have to worry about it going bad! sounds like a solid idea to me.

Chris

/me is disgusted at what he just wrote ;-)

Yes... Spam is EXTREMELY nasty stuff... (but the team is cool :D )

102 gave out mousepads and frisbees.

Definitely good choices of things to give out in my book. I use the mousepad and had a great time with the frisbee during breaks in the competition.

Someone at the midwest one was giving out spoons I think....

The nastiest thing given out was at the lonestr regional... I don't remember the team number, but it was like biohazard or something like that, they gave out this goop, really nasty stuff, it ended up in bags on the bus trip home... and on peoples clothes, and in hair, and it was just yuck.....

Oh! The best thing by far, was at the Midwest Regional (again, I'm bad with team numbers, I didn't get to spend much time socializing, we were in a crisis panic), they gave out peices of their old robot. They sliced the extrusion stuff like bread, and its a great addition to my nerdy keychain!

WHAT?!?!

Laff, my team's glow sticks aren't on the list!!!11 They're always a big hit...

but the coolest swag I've seen? At the CDN regional, this one team was handing out these flashing star lights that you could pin on just aboot everything with magnets.... then I lost mine! :'(

I found mine on the ground, and everyone kept asking me who the team was... and I STILL don't know! Who was it?

Ryan M.
07-04-2004, 09:42
DVDs are very cool. Well edited clips of your team in action can say so much more about your team than a half-way decent (;)) logo on a button.

I like the way so many people are for candy. :)

BlueOrion
07-04-2004, 11:57
We have a lot to give out, and people on our team don't want to add anything else to the list, just for the sake of their sanity and such. Buttons, candy, pocket CD's, brochures...that's mostly it. Our candy is nifty though...it even comes sealed with a Miss Daisy sticker.

Everyone says people should hand out food...kinda funny that the "rules" that I, of course, never follow say that teams can't hand out "candy, water, soft drinks, or fruit or noisy devices." Hah! Robotics is LOUD to begin with and we can't live without food...robotics people eat constantly. Rules are made to be forgotten and broken, that's what I say.

Hmmm. the team is right on the tip of my tongue but at UTC they had those nifty little pen/keychains that they were handing out. those were pretty nifty and unique, never the less they were quite the comodity ;)

Oh those stress balls from 236 Techno Tickz were also pretty nifty and very usefull during alliance pairing and playoff matches

Well, ok.. maybe 499. One of our mentors had fun with part of one tonight involving goat cheese..

Last year my team handed out maze pens with our team name and number printed on them. They come in a variety of colors and were an extremely successful handout at SoCal.

One really cool handout I saw this year was team 691 "Hartburn" which gave out red hots in what looked like prescription bottles. Our advisor freaked when he saw all of us guzzling down "pills" out of bottles.

15-05-2004, 23:06
The Best "Give-Away" would definately be Ultimate Frizbees with your team logo on it, and a web adress. The reason I put give-away in quotes is that it might be to expensive to make just to hand out, maybe $3 or somthing like that. I have moticed that there are a lot of Ultimate players at FIRST events.

Don't remember who, but last year at Nats, a team gave out mini limit switches. The real thing. They put them on little gold colored chains, and mine is now on my key chain. Love it! Play with it all the time.

I also like - best of all - blinking, flashing buttons!

Hey Adam.....email me, and I'll send you a FIRST bumper sticker. We're giving them out at the Sweet Repeat next October, but you can get a preview! :yikes:

My team handed out hand made shrinky-dink pins shaped as labcoats. WOOT to the 114 labcoats. Had a limited stock though, so we only gave 1 or 2 to each team.

My Team at Nationals gave out Fans. WE had over 300 of them and didn't come back with more then 2. We went up and around the stands handing the fans out to people cause it was hot ... we will bring them back next year and have more. We are still trying to find our one we attended for Sir Charles. We wrote all this stuff on the back of fan with some of his sayings, but then accidently handed it out.

This year 422 handed out "I drive my other car with JOYSTICKS" as a bumper sticker, but they were too small and tended to become one with a car's paint (read: personal experience). A very zen sticker if I say so myself.

Had the same experience with the 422 "bumper" sticker in 2002. ("last year," hm, I'm replying to an old message. That's what happens when you do a google search on "I drive my other car with joysticks" I suppose.)

I want one of those bumper stickers, except on a REAL bumper sticker.

this year we gave out a dvd to each team at the FLR event. it was about a 5-7 min video of our teams process of building. being a rookie team i thought this was great. during the finals, between matches, to our surprise they played our dvd on the big screen, and it was great! :)

07-03-2005, 23:38
hmm.... I know pat said it earlier, but we gave out silly putty last year...

I like:
-this little keychain with a robot made of random screws and nuts and stuff and I really don't remember which team it came from but it's so cool (and cute)
-the devil duckies (team #?)
-team 87's hacky sacks (and I don't even play hackysack, I just thing it's cool. It's right next to me now actually. It lives in the robotics room.)

Well I got GermX! to sponsor 616 this year so it was obvious that I was giving out Hand Sanitizer. Everyone knows about my huge phobia of....NORWALK!!! People who came up to me didn't leave without a squirt of hand sanitizer, or a little sample packet thing. It was interesting. I also put a bottle up where the napkins/food stuff was. The end of the day...the bottle was almost empty so it was great. Other than our wonderful hand sanitizer, the Robodog's buttons were neat. They had these unique square buttons. 1413 gave out these little hat looking things that were foamy.

I doubt that anything is refused. The most appreciated giveaway of course is information (digital or hard) pertinent to the robotics events. Our team [1111] does that and will at this year's Chesapeake Regional.

im a rookie so i dont know whats been given out in the past but we've been thinking about tucking the team bumper sticker under the winsheild wipers of all the cars in the parking lot at comp. visors might be cool and dispite what people might think buttons are always going to be a classic. oh yeah and i like the hug idea too.

Im surprised to see so few replies about the rubber chicken keychains we hand out. At FLR I was getting pounced on when i was going around in the chicken suit with a bucket full of them.

my favorite swag would probably be any kind of small keychain that is neat or quirky, or maybe has a small amount of interactivity... though I havent really recieved anything like this.

buttons never get old

08-03-2005, 19:09
this year team 549 made specail keychains that we gave to each drive team we played with...they were metal and we milled out " DEVIL DAWGS" on one side, and "549" on the other...people were asking for them, so i assume they went over well.

The world of marketing promotions is indeed wide and wonderful. Just Google on "marketing promotions" for tens of thousands of ideas. I think these paddle balls (http://www.branders.com/s/Promotional-Paddle-Balls-12032.html) with your team logo would be just the ticket.

By far beach balls !
Team 330 beach bots kept me entertained freshmen year... @ the LA regional i mean there wasn't anything to do so we played with balls ran around the stadium etc.. LOL

At the BAE Systems regional we gave out fortune cookies, and the fortunes were made up by the team. They said things like "this cookie is the perfect cure for a mountain dew overdose" and another had something in binary i think it said team 836. they were pretty popular and we ran out quickly i don't know if thats is from other teams or my own eating them.

TJ Squared gave out nifty tie-died wrist bands last year at SBPLI. It really made the place colorful. :)

There is also an Online Database (http://dsd-database.impulse3d.com) that's hosted specifically for tracking comprehensive team information that also has a local application component (http://dsd.impulse3d.com/downloads.php) to it. I think the Online Database is pretty cool and it would be especially useful once a lot of teams begin using it. :D The development team of that software also handed out an older version of the software last year at SBPLI.

Our original idea was to give out Alien(our mascot) Lollipops. However, we then found out that we were not allowed to give out food at the competition. A couple weeks ago I was notified that EBGames was going to sponser us. Now we are most likely going to give out EBGames Coupons...

Well, at the NH regional, I personally went around to each team's pit and gave them a CD with my trading card program so they can make their own trading cards... the handout that gives you handouts =P

Although at the regional... everyone wanted one of my mini-sombreros... hell, I even had most of them get stolen right out of our pit despite the fact that I hid them under a pile of stuff. I went in with 30 and left with 6... man, those were $4 each. If I could have handed them out, I would have... but I didn't have enough... I even saw 2 volunteers with one hanging from their laniard-identity-tag-thingies.

I personally like what my team gives out. They seem to be a hit at regionals every year. We design and mill out keychains with cnc machines. Here's a pictuere of this year's keychain. The final design looks a little bit different. We actually actually started to sandblast them before the final cutting of the design so that the keychain has a cool sandblasted look with a shiny design for the cut out.

What I usually help out with and give out on behalf of Team 195, The Cyber Knights are picture CD's. This year @ UTC I was handing out Pictures of all the robots that attended the 2005 Copmetition in Hartford. I also when into my personal archives and found robots from 2002 and 2004 to put along with the 2005 bots.

I think that's pretty cool. You can remember great plays on the field and memorable times in the pit but I guarantee you may have a tough time remembering what certain bots look like! Lol.

It definately wasn't on the poll, but the coolest thing i've ever gotten was a cow tail.

16-03-2005, 22:10
So, you like our cow tails? For the Annapolis regional we have these cool keychains that open up and have a little screwdriver set inside of them. Sorry we didn't have them for Pitt....They came in the thursday we left to go to the regional, but we had already left. But hasn't anyone received any of our cow print bandanas that we have been handing out last year and this year and probably longer than i know?

My team had tomahawks that we made. My friend traded two of them for one shirt. Thats probably the best trade I have heard of. Between a shirt and a representative item of the team, I'd pick an item (Like our tomahawks).

For anyone who's ever been to Great Lakes Regional (and Detriot this year too), after finals, before awards, we spread out through the stands and at a preassigned time start handing out our airplanes (balsa wood with sponsor names on wings, weighted nose; they fly very well...). It is the most amazing sight ever to see literally hundreds of airplanes flying down to the field at once. It's the paper airplane, improved.

Well, as much as I dislike tooting my own horn, I have to admit that our bumper stickers were pretty neat this year...a refreshing change from the usual pins. I just wish that I had been able to drag my camera around more often, they were turning up in the strangest places at MWR and BMR...refs, judges, our own robot, drivers, announcers, other robots, even vision tetras themselves!

I have to say, the dark safety glasses that the TechnoKats (45) dished out were great as were the earplugs from QC Elite (648)... I needed both pretty badly as both pairs of my previous safety glasses disappeared and my rapidly declining hearing isn't being helped by attending competitions.

id have to say our team had the coolest handouts this year bar none...
sorry to all of you who like the slinkies and candy, but you cant beat ours

this year my team (40) had a student design a double layered maze using CAD and AutoDesk. the maze was 2"x2"x1/2" and was red and white checkered (which matched the paint job on out robot and our team rugby shirts). it used a .1" steel bb that went up and down the paths and could fall through holes to the other side of the maze.

we had about 60 to hand out at BAE and they went faster than you can imagine. we made 100 more for Waterloo and those went like lightening. the student personally designed them to be extremely addictive and aggravating to solve.

fyi, we made another game like this last year and during break Dean Kamen and all of the judges were playnig with them. :)

sorry to disappoint, but u cant beat those :D

YES! These things were AWESOME!

Team 188's giveaways are decks of playing cards with the Blizzard logo on the back. (See my avatar)

You probably haven't seen them, because they're extremely "limited edition," but every team at Pittsburgh and Waterloo got two packs each. So if you were lucky enough to get one :ahh: ...

My team has been looking at givaways for nationals (yeah, it's kinda late for buttons)
One of the easiest and cheapest things we could come up with were Custom Linux Live-disks. Just remaster Knoppix, rip everything out and put in our favorite *nix programs and cool team wallpaper, and voila! Is this a good givaway, or should we stick to overpriced buttons?

The coolest thing I ever got was...ready for this? you better be sitting down 'cause this is gonna be big. The Somerville HS team (101 or 102) was handing out...ready?...BOTTLES OF HAND-SANITIZER THAT HAD BELT HOLSTERS ON THEM! Yeah, I know. You're probably thinking, "It's genius, how could someone have thought of something so simple, yet so marvelous??" They were sponsored by Verizon and were walking around with huge bags with frisbees, hacky sacks, buttons, THE HAND SANITZER, and other stuff.
At the Trenton Regional we all walked around flashing our new hand sanitzer holsters. That's right. I bet you wish you had one of these.

yea.. we give out these cool little medalions.. http://67.18.37.18/2213/155/upload/p810067.jpg precision edge makes them with a lazer.. they are faily expensive.. i think 3$ a pop and we handed out over 300 at toronto and over 150 at GLR. . . .. *thanks to precision edge they were free :d.... we thought EVERYONE would have a lanyard we heard they were common giveaways and were shocked that many ppl did not have one to put the medalion on.. so ppl stuck another teams button's pin thru the hole at the top.. and then stuck it to their shirts etc..

.but i thought the beach balls (dunno team @ Toronto) and freesbees (frog force @ GLR)were cool ... and the ontario power light thingys were cool at toronto . .adn i didnlt get one :(.. . also team pins are REALLY nice but expensive.. we were thinking on getting one with the us/can flag crosing.. so ppl can use that to stick medialion to shirt. . but we ran outa promotional funding. . .. .we are already spending WAYYYY to much .. 75k USD total this year.. its been CRZY!

at the nationals we are giving away first aid kits(pits), medialions, and robot inspection checklists(pits)... and i think buttons if we make them in time..

Yeah, I have a huge glob of silly putty that could entertain me for days. While this may not be the coolest thing a team could give out, team 1403 gave away pens. Of course, not just any pens, but the best pens I have EVER USED!! First, they were the smoothest gliding ballpoint I've ever used, second, they look cool, and third, they're compact and fit comfortably in even the pockets of tight pants. I declare the 1403 pen to be the king of click pens!! Did anybody else get one and think they were this awesome?

what did teams think about the robot checklist / safety guidelines that we gave out ? did anyone acually use them?? i know a couple rookie teams came up to me and thanked me cuz they said they had no clue of what to do...and it provided a base.. but what about all the veteran teams?

i HAVE to thank team #1 for giving away pens at great lakes.. because it had a clip for shirt pockets.. i put a wirearound that and put on a lanyard , it is my lucky scouting pen/etc,, , ive used it soo many times and its good to know it wont explode in my pocket!! < aha you can see the yellow pen sticking outa the junk around my neck in the pic too :D

A few years back, we cnc cut soap molds out of wax with our team number embossed on the top of the soap. I can't remember exactly how many bars of colored soap I made, but it was a lot. I also added a label inside each bag that stated "This is soap, Not food", just because some of us where worried people may try to eat it. Definately got mixed comments bout the soap idea, some people thaught it was great, complaining they never got enough soap at the hotel, others thaught it was an odd idea, but it got our name out, and I thaught it was creative. Right now we are giving out buttons, and brochures. I remember in the past getting a lot of cool things, like the slinky. I forget the team number, but I still have a duck that I adopted, that may have been last year.I have a drawer full of stuff that i've accumulated, lke one team was giving out a small screw driver set, a barrel of monkeys, stuff like that. Ahh the good ol' days.

Hmm what about those Timken stress balls, frisbes, and orange jelly beans 1071 was given to hand out at nationals??? (had to get the commercial in as we're on the verge of being the first major Timken backed team and not many people knew we were with Timken)

Unfortunatly we didn't know those stress balls and stuff we're going to go so fast. We only had 2 boxes of stuff, but I have been told it's almost guranteed we'll have 10 times more stuff for next year :-)

To me the best things teams can give out are the more unusual things(AKA not buttons), and thinks that are really helpful to other teams.
We gave away "battery flags" to anyone who would take them. We thought they would be very helpful to other teams. In retrospect we probably should have had a poster or instruction sheets or something explaining clearly what they were and how to use them.

"What they were" is a small yellow flat bit of plastic that fits into a standard battery connector.

"How to use them" is easy: fit them on a freshly-charged battery's connector to indicate that the battery is charged. In order to plug the battery into a robot, you'll have to remove the flag, of course.

This works very well to keep from being confused about which batteries are charged and which are used. You can't forget to pull the flag off a battery when you use it.

Team 1421 at the Lone Star regionals gave out ring binders with "Team Chaos" scouting reports to every team that competed at the regional.(40 total) Each binder had a color picture of every one of the teams robots above a scoring form. A very lot of work and very helpful.

Our team gave out Dog tags at the Colorado Regionals, they were a complete hit. We decided dog tags this yar cause we got a new laser and I suggested let's make key chains cause I was thing off lasering out plastic but then our teacher got the idea of dog tags since our mascot is the bulldog.

10-04-2006, 01:21
Wow, this thread is like almost an entire year old.

Anyway, I missed out on those dog tags. I was going to get a pair but then I think I had to run out with either a battery or a laptop to our robot in the queing line; thus making me forget about anything else.

Our team gave out thunderstick things with the top shaped like a cougar paw (a cougar being the school mascot).

If you were at the colorado regionals there's no way you could have missed these, everyone hitting everyone else with them. (In hindsight, perhaps not such a bright idea).

I think that a carabiner is a really cool team giveaway. I got 3 from ACHS robotics last year but couldn't find whoever was handing them out this year.

The coolest things for me are team and sponsor stickers. I am trying to cover my drill case with every robtics related sticker I can get my hands on.
Our team gives out safety shields (side guards to make regular glasses compliant with FIRST rules) so that people don't have to double up their glasses by also wearing goggles. We run out of them really fast, because once we hand out a pair, the word gets around very fast.
(Hey, don't be stealing our handout ideas!) :p

Hands down, shop rags.

I got one from.... well can't remember which team. They were in the back corner of the pit area at the Boilermaker regional. The shop rags were stamped with their team name and logo.

-QSecond that. I got a nice shop rag from 85 a couple seasons back -- good logo on it, and it has been useful.

hmm.. buttons are classic and always nice. A team gave out a band-aid despenser at atlanta this year, i thought that was pretty awesome. I think getting a scouting cd would be awesome to get, our soap team passes them out. Other then that, i think practical things you could use, are always the best things to get, like rags, or pens.

We gave out Buttons/Stickers/flyers.

01-05-2006, 17:32
We gave out buttons that were like no other. We got so many awesome comments from everyone. Too bad we only had them for the Nationals.

My favorite has to be the maze pen. Two balls in a maze in a pen!
I spent countless hours staring at it looking for the best way out in class.

On the list i have to say DVD. but personaly I think the lanyards that 16 had (only our flight got one) were the coolest because those they can use to hold their Nasa badges for years on end even when they profesionally work somewhere..

also i think 45's kwel saftey gogles owned all :) i loved them and wish they could pm me with where they got them.. (Please say HomeDepot + ShrinkWrap Lol)

has anybody mentioned MOE's miracle towel? actually they normally don't give those out, but it's soooo cool. i love when teams give away beads...though most to all of mine that i got in atlanta were given to a member dancing. i've gotten a whistle at pittsburgh..that was cool and was useful for saving my voice. a team gave me a wristband..like the one for the wrap party in atlanta..that was cool.

I think the best thing my team could give out is scouting data. We have a great scouting system and are looking at going public next year. Letting teams know that you are prepared going into a match doesnt just let them know who you are, but showes them what you can bring to an alliance

Danielle H

I was thinking about taking Tulip paint to some unworn bandanas and pass them out. Or just give out the bandanas themselves. Help control some sweating in the pits. (No pun intended...)

Chrispy393
06-05-2006, 22:16
Uhm... well...when in utter despair I made the joke about handing out condoms. Not that any team would ever do that (if any of you do...please give credit to Chrispy for the idea!) but could FIRST really say "Safe Sex isn't allowed." Then again I also made the joke about putting it in our chairman's award submission as 'stopping the new world epidemic...'

I got a pair of FIRST earrings made from FIMO clay at the Chesapeake Regional...one of the mentors from 1449 made them, I believe, and they are awesome. A mentor for Robot Chicks Union (thanks Pat :) ) made bracelets which we handed out at our meeting. I think jewelry that is wearable every day, not just appropriate at FIRST events, is a great idea.

The coolist thing a team can give out is key chains:D . After competitions the best thing to do is load up your backpack with other teams keychains. I haven't been to a competition yet(I'm going to two in march), but last year all my friends came back after a trip with all kinds of stuff on their backpacks. I also want a slinky

I got a pen with a built-in highlighter from one team... that was my favorite, because it was really useful. I could highlight match times and take notes about alliance partners/opposing alliances at the same time!

I really like the rubber bracelets because people will wear those almost all year if they look cool (someone else probably suggested this but i don't feel like reading all the pages):o .

Another thing i just thought of is shoes laces in your colors (like one blue and one green) and have your team name on it, now that would be awesome.

How about giving out bottle water....i got so thirsty last year/////aggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Great idea but... isn't there a rule against giving out/selling, or bringing in food from outside vendors?

Our team this year is considering passing out yo-yos. They come in the standard circle shape but also a triangle and square. FIRST shapes!!. I am sick nasty with a yo-yo.

The best thing I have ever seen handed out where plastic veiner calipers at the Finger Lakes regionals. don't know from who. Also anything with blinking lights is popular. SO SHINY!!!

Come on guys, what does FIRST emphasize more than safety? And shouldn't that apply to all of your life's endeavors, and not just FIRST?

With that in mind, what could be cooler than printing your team's logo on latex prophylactic devices and handing them out at competitions?

Blue_Mist
15-01-2008, 02:17
The most awesome thing that our team has ever given away were some little pens that you have to click out (fold out) to open and use. The problem was they are expensive (a bit over a dollar each) and the following quotes as people snapped themselves opening the pens:D:

Student 1: Ow!
Student 2: What? Ow! Oh...
Student 3: Huh? Ow! Ah...
Student 4: Ow!
...And so forth.

They were so much fun, though, and we used them for scouting purposes.

Teams should totally give out safety glasses with their logo on it. Hate my team's glasses and I would wear anything even if it had someone elses logo on it. Or you could just make some for your team.

Our team, 2024, gave out hand painted kukui nuts at the Silicon Valley Regional. I thought they looked really cool. Stringing and writing 2024 on all 150 of them was pretty tedious though. I'm not sure if we are doing it for nationals cause I really dont feel like making over 500 in two weeks. But if a lot of you guys want them I'll try to get started.

Actually, Team 100 (I only saw them at SVR this year) printed Robotics versions of a 100-dollar bill, with "In Dean We Trust" and the signature of their team captain. They also had a picture of their robot the BallFrog in the place where normally Ben Franklin would sit. It was pretty awesome.

Okay so, this year, my team had three main ideas:

1) laser pointers. Probably not allowed, but c'mon...
2) swag bags. I heard at least twenty people at both regionals saying, "Hey, can you guys go find like a bag or something to put all this stuff in?" BOOM. Instant solution. Swag Bag.
3) Bounceback balls. We eventually decided on these. It was awesome.

Personal favorite is the seizure inducing blinking lights oo aa :yikes:

I did absolutely LOVE Team Oriole Assault's orange blinky lights. Oh man.
