you shoulda seen my car (though i do believe its breathed its last...)...i had a 91 mercury station wagon...remember those back in the day when everyone had them. with the wood paneling for the side and stuff? that was my car and i loved it. you think station wagon and you think maybe slightly larger then a sadan, dinky engine...in reality it was wider then my moms suburban, and actually longer too. i never did find a parking spot i fit in lengthwise, and only a few that i fit in width wise
as far as the engine...5L, V8...i suppose it might be considered dinky...

Being tall has its drawbacks.
I'm about 6'3 so my selection of cars is limited. I'm still looking for my first car. My mom wants me to have something with leg room, but I don't want a big family car. Whats a good inexpensive car for a person my height thats not to big and family looking?
P.S. Jessica, I've seen a lot shorter people than you so don't feel bad, I'm way taller than my mom, she's about 5'4, my dad is 6'4.

I really have no idea why anyone likes SUVs. No one uses them for their purpose so I don't get it. I'm fairly happy having a Red '99 Dodge Dakota waiting in the parking lot for me although I definately wouldn't have a problem if it turned into a BMW Z-3 Roadster while I was at work. ;)
Matt
SUVs...4x4s...I do see a difference...
SUVs are those small "spin-offs" of the real thing (4x4) made to look good at a reasonable price. The main attribute that makes SUVs popular, their "sleek" design, is also a flaw that allows the vehicle to flip upside down in a split second....
4x4s, now those are the "ish". They are rugged, dependable and last a long time. They are also the only things a few of the posters in this thread can comfortably drive in...you know, the height thing...
~Wow, totally went off tangent there....
mike o'leary
08-06-2001, 21:57
the other problem with suv's is that theyre a danger to other drivers, cuz you cant see around them and stuff
plus who wants to own an suv now with gas prices as high as they are?
as far as off roading...i once took my station wagon on a little spin through the woods...it was fun...i was following my friend (who has a tahoe) and he went through the woods and i was too lazy to go around...everyone was shocked when they saw the wagon come out though
and suv's are fine if theyre used to go off roading or cuz you have 5 kids in youre family, or pull heavy loads...but if youre gonna use it for off roading or for heavy loads there are better things out there, pick ups and such
Clark Gilbert
09-06-2001, 13:00
Yeah speaking of high gas prices... my bronco only gets 8 miles per gallon in the city... so at 1.68 a gallon for gas it cost me approx. $40 to go from an empty tank to a full tank.. which only takes a little more than a week...
About the height of SUV's... i like that they are tall cuz it keeps people off your butt when you're driving down the interstate... plus i like sitting up higher.. it gives the feeling of control..lol:D
I think an SUV with 4X4 is perfect for off-roading.. i dont like pickups cuz they can be so light in the back..
mike o'leary
09-06-2001, 14:38
yeah if its tall you feel like youre in control, but how are other cars supposed to see around you? if someones behind you in traffic its impossible to see the car ahead of you's break lights. also when youre at an intersection trying to turn one way and an suv pulls up next to you to turn the other way its impossible to see cars coming from that direction so you cant tell if its safe to turn
also...$1.68/gallon!?
what kind of gas do you get? around here its $1.89 or so at least for the lowest grade of gas...
mike who feels even more ripped off then he did before
Joe Ross

Thats why I got a job at McDonalds this summer to try to buy a car. In MD gas is about $1.69 a gallon. Well, you can find the watered-down stuff for cheaper but I digress. We also have the second highest income on average for a state (behind Alaska) and are about number 5 in standard of living. So there :-p.
But about the gas companies taking the extra cost in profits: It's not the gasoline companies, it's OPEC. OPEC controls how much crude oil is produced and therefore controls the cost for oil on the open market. They're the ones that get the extra profit by not supplying enough. Just so you know, if OPEC was a group of companies in the United States (as opposed to a group of countries, which it is), OPEC would be causing a little thing known as "restraint in trade...." Todays lesson in monopolistic practices of the world is brought to you by.......no one because the big companies don't want you to know they're monopolies. ;)

Matt Leese
14-06-2001, 11:43
I don't really know Molly's car so I can't give an exact answer but I can speculate. I'm betting her car gets much better gas mileage than say, an SUV (or insert other large vehicle here). The auto industry tends to put larger gas tanks on vehicles that get poorer miles per gallon because then you don't have to fillup as much. That's why I wish I could stop driving the stupid minivan and drive the Ford Escort. :-D
Matt
mike o'leary
14-06-2001, 12:15
this is true, but did you notice that it was mentioned that she doest have power windows? that leads me to believe that she has an older car, which dont tend to have as good gas milage as a newer car
also she said she has to fill up every 3 days (i think)
Matt Leese
14-06-2001, 13:17
Not having power windows has nothing to do with having an older car. It has to do with not buying the top of the line car. For instance, my family has a '99 Dodge Dakota without power windows. If you tell me that's old, I would just like to point out I've been in FIRST longer than that trucks existed. And they do still make cars without power windows. And as to filling up every three days (I'm not sure if she posted that or not), it depends on how far she travels every day. Don't make a conclusion til you have enough facts. :)
Matt
David Kelly
14-06-2001, 13:18
Correct me if i'm wrong, but don't they still make cars that are stripped down with nothing? No, powerer windows, doors, cheap radio, no cruise, and they still get good milage.

if its a new car without power windows (and i did know that they make those - a friend of mine just got one) then as you said its not a top of the line car...and mostly the cars that get really good gas mileage are more the ones that are top of the line (notice the mostly: some cars like that do get good mileage, but in my experiance most of them dont)
my conclusion was, granted, based on very few facts, but i was using the ones i had...also: she is a high school student: how far
could she possible drive in 3 days to go through a full tank with good gas mileage?
Matt Leese
14-06-2001, 14:50
I'm not sure what kind of cars you buy but cheap ones tend to have smaller engines (less gas consumption) and are smaller overall (again less gas consumption). Basically a bottom line Dodge Neon (which is fairly cheap) will get much better gas mileage than say a Ford Expedition (can someone explain to me exactly why that vehicle exist?!) which costs a whole lot more. And as she said, she has a very small gas tank (10 gallon by my estimate) so needing to fill up every three days is not unheard of.
Matt who wonders why he's arguing about this....
mike o'leary
14-06-2001, 16:37
i didnt mean that they put a monstrous engine in a small cheap car...i meant that they dont put the most efficient engine in it.
and i dont know why im arguing about it either...heres an idea to settle it:
what kind of car do you have molly? and what's its mileage?

Don't feel bad Jessica. I'm busting my butt working at McDonalds this summer trying to save money to buy a car. I just don't know what to buy. I'll probably have to get something pretty old. My grandmother has a '98 Dodge Neon that is about to fall apart. It doesn't have power windors nor power locks. The window roller fell off one of the doors. Those are cheap cars, but good on the money.

I believe my grandmother also has a '98 Dodge Neon (I was mentally trying to figure out the year and I think that's the correct year) but her's is in just fineshape. I think a lot of it has to do with how well you take care of the car. Then again my grandmother's car is seldom driven. I've never owned one but I have driven it and I find it nice. :)
