View Full Version : FIRST Regional Music Playlist
Joe Matt

Coming from the FIRST Music thread, I think we should get everyone to suggest one or two songs that we could recommend FIRST play at regionals. Our favorites. I'll update this post with the songs and who recommended them...
Also, if you want people to RECOGNIZE the songs, also provide a link to iTunes or an mp3 so we know.
Rules:
No bad lyrics.
Song length around 4-5 mins, not 'Stairway to Heaven' ballads guys ;)
Make the songs somewhat relevant to FIRST, robotics, technology, or something like that.

How about two groups? The Barenaked Ladies should definitely be thrown in there, as well as everyone's favorite, They Might Be Giants.
The day I hear "Particle Man" played at a FIRST regional will be the day that all is right in the world...:)

Bullets to Binary - mewithoutYou
And now for a band someone's actually heard of...
Softer to Me - Reliant K
If anyone wants links to these songs, I can provide. These are actually decent bands even though I'm sure 90% of the CD crowd hasn't heard of over half of them...

I agree 100%. Hearing "Particle Man" would be awesome. How about "Too Little Too Late", "It's All Been Done", and "Pinch Me"? Phantom Planet, OAR, DMB, Coldplay, and the Goo Goo Dolls would also go over quite well, by my standards, anyways. These are the more "rock" bands that I like. I realize that not everybody likes Punk, and god forbid I mention a Ska band or two ::coughreelbigfishandcatch-22cough::..

1. Lifestyles of the rich and famous- Good Charlotte
2. Dare to be Stupid- Wierd Al Yankovic

4. Castaway- Green Day
There's a bunch of other songs, but I don't know who makes them.
I get four more :)
When I Get You Alone -- Thicke
Paradise by the Dashboard Light -- Meatloaf A. Day
Dream A Dream (Miami Booty Remix) -- Captain Jack
Doin' Time (Martial Arts Remix) -- Sublime and Pharcyde

Might I point out that members of the Barenaked Ladies are Canadian, and which is even more exciting, a couple of members (steven paige) and im not sure, but someone graduated from our very own, humble little school. thats right folks, from woburn collegiate.. also from a local middle school that i went to as well... exciting stuff no?
also.. there seems to be only one or two genres of music being explored...anything high energy is great, including hiphop, techno, whatever else you can think of
swollen members - watch this, steppin thru, etc.. BC based hiphop
run dmc - run's house, its tricky
nelly - batter up? .. thats always pretty high energy
daniel beddingfield - gotta get through this
dont know how applicable these are, but = )

What's everyone's beef with Sandstorm??
As for music that are FIRST staples:
Styx - Mr. Roboto
Harry Belefonte - Hot Hot Hot
Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine - Congo
As for Songs I want to see incorporated this year:
Tatu - Robot
DDR stuff all the way!!
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
Winx - Don't Laugh (Original or Remix)
Robbie Williams - Rock DJ
Sash - Encore Une Fois
StarSailor - Good Souls
Sugarbees - Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Blues
Trapt - Headstrong
and finally...(drum roll please)
Kraftwerk - We are the Robots!!
edit: Just Keep in mind that it is more than likely an outside DJ (re: not FIRST staff or Volunteer) that plays the songs at the Regionals and Nationals so ask them when you get there whether or not you can make requests and\or whether or not you can have them play a cd of your own.
Some of them are ok with that, and some are not!
BNL-who needs sleep
Queen- another one bites the dust
They are the two songs i relate FIRST most to.... and some Red Hot Chili Peppers (love rolercoaster?) would be nice to hear at a regional too.

Going with my original two groups...
Barenaked Ladies - I'd go with the faster paced, more "radio friendly" songs - One Week, It's All Been Done, Who Needs Sleep, Another Postcard, and their ilk.
TMBG - Particle Man is a definite must. I'd also consider Istanbul and maybe Dr. Worm. Other than that...I'd leave it up to the DJ. Most of TMBG's songs would work just fine for a FIRST event.
I'm also into classic rock. Queen is always good (Bohemian Rhapsody would be great during a break in the action), as are the Beatles (again, the fast paced songs would work best).
Some Cake (maybe I Will Survive with a minor edit) or Eels (My Beloved Monster, maybe?) would be nice, but that's probably asking too much...
I've got a lot more ideas; I'm just trying to keep my list somewhat close to the limits. I think I've already blown it, though...:D

Me too :D
Wow ... this list surprised me ... I didn't know FIRST had so many "punk" fans. Which is cool ... FIRST needs upbeat music as opposed to slow pop junk.
I'm really surprised as to how many people like, let alone have heard of Relient K. Do people actually listen to them where you live? The *only* reason I've even heard the name is because I went to one of their shows with my ex-girlfriend. (I must say I was reasonably impressed ... for a christian band)
Finally, un-ban Sandstorm. It is perfect for a FIRST event. Techno forever!
I'm likeo one of the only guys in my area that I know of that listens to Reliant K, but I love their music, and belive it or not they are considered a punk band. Oh, listen to Mood Ring, reeal good song for us of the male sex...
And here is my revised list-
Chap Stick, Chapped Lips, and Things Like Chemistry - Reliant K
Pressing On - Reliant K
Kryptonite - Three Doors Down
Get it Right - The Offspring
Pretty Fly (For a White Guy) - The Offspring
Smooth Criminal - Alien Antfarm
I'll think of four more, and post them at a later date

You're so scatter brained Rhiza. :p
I'll follow the formerly stated two rule.
The Distance - CAKE
Body Movin' - The Beastie Boys
Those are two songs I'd like to hear at a FIRST regional. They probably aren't my favorite, but for an energetic crowd of sorts, they would be good in my opinion.
Edit- Well, I'm not going to follow the two rule. I don't know if anyone listed this yet but Fuel by Metallica.

Will Hoge - Sunshine Burn
Third Eye Blind - Semicharmed Life

Looking over this list and from my times being on the field I think I have some suggestions to make for some music at regionals.
1. The Who - "Pinball Wizard"
2. The Eagles - "Hotel California"
3. Creed - "One"
4. U2 - "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
5. Tom Petty - "Won't Back Down"
6. Steppenwolf - "Born to Be Wild"
7. Rob Zombie - "Never Gonna Stop"
8. Powerman 5000 - "When Worlds Collide"
9. Metallica - "For Whom the Bell Tolls"
10. Linkin Park - "Faint"
All I know is that this is the short list of songs I would have loved to heard when I was out on that field. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy!!
Sum41-Still Waiting is unfortunately an inappropriate song. In the first line or 2 they sing about ...well read for yourselves >>>>
"Drop dead
A bullet to my head
Your words are like a gun in hand
You can't change the state of the nation
We just need some motivation"
I don't know how "inapproproate" it is but i was going to use that on my teams flash intro and was told it was inappropriate because of that line.

Trance[]control music is good 'cause there are no words & most of their songs are about 5 minutes long. I would also like to suggest Boom and Our Time has Come by P.O.D.

Sum41-Still Waiting is unfortunately an inappropriate song. In the first line or 2 they sing about ...well read for yourselves >>>>
"Drop dead
A bullet to my head
Your words are like a gun in hand
You can't change the state of the nation
We just need some motivation"
I don't know how "inapproproate" it is but i was going to use that on my teams flash intro and was told it was inappropriate because of that line.
saliva- click click boomSo, Kev... you think that a song about a shotgun is any better?!?!?!?!?!?!? lol

I will personally kill a new born baby if a Linkin Park, Sum 41, or any other crappy nu-metal emo band gets on there.
Ah well it doesn't really matter, the only two things that I've seen that I would approve being on it is Bad Religion and NOFX.
This list needs more good power metal... and for technology? hmm..
BAD RELIGION - 21st Century Digital Boy
Buckethead - Nun Chuka Kata (awesome awesome no vocals just straight guitar bliss)
Falconer - Wings of Serenity
Even if it doesn't make it, I highly suggest all of you download the Falconer song if you are remotely interested in Metal and awesome vocals with awesome guitar work.
EDIT: And for the nerds out there (everyone)
Halo - Opening Suite

i do agree w/ the above stated, but we should probably just gather up the young ones because they will play all the sold out music they can get there hands on because for some reason they dont want to play techno at robotics any more!?!? the only thing at a ROBOTICS compitition should be TECHNO
Im done talking now
race against myself - the offspring
changes - godsmack
same direction - hoobastank
numb - linkin park
streaks in the sky - thursday
faint - linkin park
runaway - linkin park
way away - yellowcard
i know ive got more linkin park than anything else there, but usually linkin park just fits the energy really good. as soon as i read this thread and some of the posts i got like 5 million songs that ran through my head, so i only posted a few here. i dont wanna name every song in the world here. :D

How could we forget those classics we ALWAYS hear at FIRST events, such as:
Brim Full of Asha - Cornershop

Whenever I hear these songs, I think about FIRST, and I don't know why...

FIRST events, such as:
Brim Full of Asha - Cornershop
Huh?? What is this song?
Huh?? What is this song?
There's a brimful of asha on the 45,
there's a brimful of asha on the 45.
Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow,
everybody needs a bosom.
..and more.
It was not too popular a few years ago when it was released, though it was remixed by Fatboy Slim and I'm sure that's where most people who've heard of it first encountered it. It's a good song.
IronSlayTallica
06-01-2004, 17:39
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Science fiction double feature
If it's going to be that song, it should really be the original, sung by Richard O'Brien, or Riff Raff, of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. :)
Anyway... Anything Iron Maiden would do. Metallica, too, but a lot of the more popular songs are really long. Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train would be awesome to hear.

hehe, this is quite funny because one of the original rules in suggesting songs was "* Song length around 4-5 mins, not 'Stairway to Heaven' ballads guys". :D
but yea... i agree that since one of the FIRST game hints were lyrics from stairway to heaven, it might make a good themesong! :p

^^^ While I do agree the list needs more metal, I disagree on the Metallica part ;) The way I see it everyone has heard of Metallica, why not introduce some people to other metal?
As it stands, teenagers today think metal is Disturbed, Linkin Park, or POD. THIS IS NOT REAL METAL, KIDS!
But then again I've been pretensious enough in this thread so... uh sorry :P

I, being a FIRST traditionalist, think that rap should be left minimalized at the regionals. At a few regionals I've been to, some people (especially parents and other spectators) got really upset when the DJ played a lot of rap.

It's probably for the best to keep the playlist to things that are more generally acceptable...which means lots of rock.
Not that that's a bad thing.

Do remember guys, that the music lineup isn't just for us. It's mainly for the audience out front - most of which will be somewhat older. All this new stuff isn't going to cut it (oh darn, I hate it anyways ;) )
I would guess that if FIRST even looks at this thread they'd cut all but a few of the songs...
Elgin Clock
08-02-2004, 06:44
Not for us?? :ahh:
At FIRST competitions we are 95% of the audience unfortunately.
It's a form of spectator sport, but it seems to have a probblem in drawing in spectators.. :(
You should know that, you're not a rookie! Or are you??
steven114
08-02-2004, 10:35
No, not a rookie :)
I just think that FIRST would figure that we would attend no matter what the music is...
Elgin Clock
11-02-2004, 00:40
No, not a rookie :)
Ok, I hope you didn't take that the wrong way, I just wasn't sure if you knew how much energy was at a FIRST event. (A TON!!)
I just think that FIRST would figure that we would attend no matter what the music is...Yes this is definately true. BUt the point that I was trying to make is that if they want our input on music, then we should give it to them and hope that our suggestions make the cut. If they don't, no biggie..
I love the competitions no matter what the music is and would be there no matter what, (if i diodn;t like the music, that is no reason not to go - I mean c'mon..) but it especially motivates the crowd when a song is played that everyone likes!!
Can you say, Conga Line??
or
Feelin' Hot. Hot. Hot.
Anything by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Neil Young, The Who, etc..
To get the heart moving: Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, In Flames, Deftones, System Of A Down, Machine Head, Chevelle, Evanescense, Incubus, Nine Inch Nails.
Anything Techno is always a plus :)
steven114
11-02-2004, 00:48
Yes, I've seen the energy present at the regionals. But, most of the time, I was back in the pits frantically adjusting my code ;)
But I see your point about how the input might be taken...
I'll add a few of mine
(I wonder how many of you will have heard of these... ;) )
Title - Artist - Album
(Any songs from this album) - The Moody Blues - Hall of Fame
Time - Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder (heard this one at the Seattle regional last year)
Friend of the Devil - Grateful Dead - The Closing of Winterland
Stairway to Heaven (obligatory) - Led Zeppelin - The Best of Led Zeppelin
And many more... :)
I could totally kick myself for forgetting Pink Floyd! How about Bob Segar or Cat Stevens? :)
steven114
11-02-2004, 00:55

either:
ARTIST - SONG
or
SONG - ARTIST
(i can usually figure out which is which)
anyway, attached is what I've got so far, and I haven't added any more of my own personal music taste, much as i wanted to. keep posting, and i'll keep updating it. i'm going to upload a finalized list to my personal site about a week before the first regional, and i'll drop the link for everyone there. As well, I am going to make a CD of these songs (well, as many as i can find, feel free to email me if you know where i can get some rare ones people have listed) and bring it to the NJ Regional, the Chesapeake Regional, and Nationals. I am hoping to have a CD for each division at nationals, but we'll see what my funds allow.

Techno's always popular, here's a few goodies from a club head:
Beam vs Cyrus - Lifestyle [Megara vs DJ Lee]
DJ Encore w/ Engelina - I See Right Through To You
Bassraiders - Prepare to Qualify (Elephant Mix)
Neo Cortex - Elements [DJs at Work Rmx]
Pulsedrivers - Time [Tube Rmx]
Paul Van Dyk - Ayla (Veracocha Mix)
Ralph Fridge - Angel (Club Mix)
Seb Fontaine - Live @ Homelands 2000
Lio - Rapture
Old Techno that needs to be at every FIRST competition:
Ian Van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
The Crystal Method - Busy Child
DJ Scribble - Zombie Nation
Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone
Eiffel 65 - Blue
Darude - Sandstorm
DJ Sammy - Heaven
Gabe Salas Jr.

DJ Benny Benassi - Satisfaction
Yes its techno. Although I fear if I place the url of the video for this song, I may get in trouble with someone who may get offended with the type of clothing the girls (no nudity) are wearing while using power tools. Even though there clothes are nothing stereotypical (big understatement) of what you may see in a construction yard or a machine shop, at least they are wearing safety glasses. ;)

i would have to say some abandoned pools music. i think it was team 599 in L.A. in 2002 that was passing out their single 'the remedy'. their logo is a robot guy, and so whenever i listen to their music i think of the LA Regional in 2002. Some other music from them: 'Seed' or 'Florescein'
see their website: http://www.abandonedpools.com/
other good music:
30 Seconds to Mars - Capricorn
" " - Echelon
Metallica - The Outlaw Torn (S&M or original edition)

Whoa, what has happened to my thread. Well, as for contributions, I'd have to say: (song-artist)
Move Your Feet-Junior Senior
Where It's At-Beck
As for the ban list, I'd have to start with Sandstorm, of course.
YES!!!! Junior Senior is perfect for FIRST! It would be so cool to dance to that in competition :D
some good techno/trance music for the list..
DJ Tiesto - Sparkles
DJ Tiesto - Alone In The Dark
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Trance Remix)
Ziggy-X - Bassdusche
Sash - Ecuador
Paul Oakenfold - [The Entire] Journey Into Trance Album :D
Junkfood Junkies - Party Time
Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation
And yes, Sandstorm must be banned!
Seeing as everyone is prejudiced against Sandstorm, what do you guys think about anything else by Darude? eg. Feel The Beat, Out of Control (Back for More), Music, or Next to You?
Darude is an OK artist. Only songs i really like by him are "Let The Music Take Control" and "Drums of New York." He doesn't seem to have a lot of range in his music, anytime I hear one of his songs, it sounds like Sandstorm, it gets annoying and repetitious after awhile.
