If our team's robot is hanging from the top horizontal bar and off the ground, but another robot is touching our robot and also touching the ground, do we still get the 50 points since now we're part of their robot?

It depends if there on your team or not, If they are on your team then it DOES NOT count. If it is another teams robot, it DOES count.

hehe...for a good case of this from last year, my team had an arm that reached over on top of another bot on top of the ramp, and straddled the bot. we weren't touching the ground at all, and the bot we were on was completely on the ramp. we both were awarded the 25 points, and we won as a result.

chances are the rules are no different.

Another question about hanging I have is, what if we are hanging from the horizontal bar using it for support and not touching the ground, can we latch onto the vertical bars for additional support and still get the 50 points?

No, you cannot attach to the vertical support bars.
Ref. 7.6 <T04>

I don't know if you can use the bar to help climb up thought, as long as you let go at the end. I would assume that you can't use it to climb up or hang there, but I"m not sure.

You can't use the vertical bars for anything. The rules say that you can not grab onto, or anything involving the verticle bars to help hold yourself up. If you do so, you won't get the 50 points.

that's to help HOLD you, but what about climbing? kind of like a (purple) monkey? that should be allowed...though i suppose we'll probably have to wait on a little bit of rule clarification

As Paul said, 7.6 T04 says you can't attach yourself to the verticle bars. I'm assuming this means at no time during the match to do anything.

I wasn't sure what it meant by attach. I would guess that means you cannot have your robot react off it at any time during the match, but climbing it is a gray area for me. I wouldn't really call climbing it attaching to it, but I believe that the "intention" of the rule is that you cannot design your robot to react off of it.

From my understanding of the kick-off broadcast you can only latch onto the the top of the base of the mobile goal and to the horizontal bar in the middle of the field and nothing else...but I may be wrong as i have not had a chance to thoroughly examine the rules yet...

I believe in order to climb the sides, you must have to attach yourself to the vertical bar in some sort of way. I see no other way to climb.

Rule G24 says that the robot "...may never grab or attach to the poles." but maybe they are just referring to the goals...I'm still pretty sure that in the kick-off broadcast they said that you cannot attach or climb using the vertical poles. But...I might be wrong..=P

FIRST doesnt want anyone on the vertical supports, because thats exactly what they are. If you had 2 robots hanging off the horizontal bar, and a robot trying to hang off the vertical, bad things might happen. Pretty much all of FIRST's rules like this have to do with safety.
