Heya!
We seem to have gotten two right joysticks in our kit o' parts. Anyone else had this problem?

If we don't find someone closer to us to trade off joysticks, would your team agree to a joystick custody switch?

fortunately, both of our drivers have two left hands - and no fingers!
(they are all thumbs!)

Let's be serious here.
The joysticks (at least the ones we got from FIRST) are formed to fit the right hand. There are special features to the joystick (extra buttons placed around the stick), that would only be accessible if you use your right hand on the joystick.
Obviously, if you are a left-handed person, using this joystick is going to be a disadvantage to you.
As far as I know, only right-handed joysticks were sent with the kit. If you need a left handed stick, you will either need to special order it, or purchase a hand-neutral stick.

BTW- are veterans getting new joysticks this year - I forget

New joysticks then...are they different from last year? past years they were neutral, did they change them up?

Here is a URL where you can see what the new joystick looks like:

According the the kit PDF, this is the stick that everyone is getting.

Oh thanks a lot Chris that definately helps...thats what i was imaging in my head...pretty cool, thanks
Being a driver, the notion of driving with two of those rather than the plain neutral joysticks doesnt seem too appealing.

Order last year's joysticks.

Are we allowed to use last year's joysticks? And if so, what cost do we associate with that for the tally sheet? :yikes:

Obviously the people that made them didn't expect you to use two at once. I don't think this is really an oversight on FIRST's part. If I remember right they said at one point veterans wouldn't get joysticks this year. We got them though. Anyway, I think that they probably got a good price on them and they are good quality so they gave us two and the option to get more of whatever kind we want. I don't think they expected you to reshape your left hand:). I would suggest giving one to each driver if you use single stick drive. If you prefer two like I do, you'll probably want to pick up a couple of those old flight sticks from a supplier or your old kit and then the other driver can use one of these while you save the other for next year (remember, they might cut them off for veterans!).

I was under the impression that the new joysticks were supplied by Innovation FIRST, who would be well aware of the situation.

yeah, we have 2 right hands as well, but we just broughtthe code down to one joystick. So the righties are happy, but the lefties are left high and dry
can we use the old joysticks?

i say we eliminate the whole joystick aspect and drive with our minds

this is where you find out who REALLY wants to be the driver
ask the students who is willing to have their left hand surgically altered to move the thumb to the other side, so they will have two right hands?
that should narrow the field down a bit :c)
that slight advantage of having two right hands to match the two right handed joysticks might be the edge your team needs to win the championship

good idea. maybe we could get Los Alamos to donate a few hundred MEG helmets (http://www.lanl.gov/quarterly/q_spring03/squid_text.shtml#MEGhelmet). of course, they're a little bulky (http://oase.uci.kun.nl/~olejen/meg21.jpg), and they probably draw a lot of power. maybe a brain wave interpreter (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3089559.stm) would be better -- that only takes a few electrodes, and the article says it already works on a wheeled robot!

We're training Aignam to drive with his right hand and his right foot. We just won't let him throw any balls! (too dangerous)

I beleive everyone was supposed to get 2 right handed joysticks. Even the veteran teams got them. Im left handed so im in the category of people who just have to deal with it. But its really not that hard to drive with my right hand. I know i saw somewhere that everyone was supposed to have gotten 2 right handed joysticks, may have been the Q+A system on usfirst.org but im not sure.
i say we eliminate the whole joystick aspect and drive with our minds I could do implants. :)
But its really not that hard to drive with my right hand. It was an oversight by FIRST though. There are lefties out there who want to drive and aren't as comfortable with there right hands. Now teams are forced to go out and buy new joysticks. :(

if you dont want to use 2 righty sticks, think about it. there are 4 ports on the operator interface. simply let each driver have one righty and one neutral.
yay?

I think they only make right handed. I would just go out and buy a pair of:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1058188744427&skuId=5811856&type=product or something similar
Everyhting about them is adjustable, even the angle and height of the buttons.
You will have to hack them from USB to gameport, but that takes all of 10 minutes. see:http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=214455#post214455 for instruction on how to do so.
