And now... by popular demand...things to do in ATLANTA!!!

Atlanta, the city of thousands of Peachtree Streets...
Vibrant culture, jazz, and extracurricular activities aplenty...

Here I would like to start a thread for Atlanta Citizens to post fun activities for our visiting brothers (and sisters) to partake in during their stay.

Off the top of my head I can name a couple things to do downtown including,

-the High Museum of Art (one of the best museums in the South) http://www.high.org/index_flash.html

-Coke World (all the Coke and Coke Products you can drink)

-Martin Luther King Memorial (happy birthday!)
http://www.nps.gov/malu/

-Margaret Mitchell House (author of Gone With the Wind)
http://www.gwtw.org/

-Jimmy Carter Museum
http://www.gwtw.org/

-Stone Mountain (kinda far from Downtown, 20 mins or forever in our traffic- second worst in the Nation!!!) Though I heard they kinda sold out recently and it's kinda a theme park now :(

-Andretti Speed Lab (fun!)

-Atlanta Motor Speedway (home of the Petit Le Mans sp?)

-SciTrek Museum (very cool demos of almost every science) recomended!! :D

-Underground (uhh, you might want to rethink this... it's fun, don't get me wrong, just not for extended periods of time...) Used to be the premier clubbing area of the South East, now it's a tourist trap... example: home over 10,000 different Atlanta key chains *sigh*

-Buckhead (If you really want to go clubbin PM me)

-Six Flags (closed during the weekdays??)

-Atlanta Ballet

-Atlanta Symphony Orchestra ASO

-Ferst Center (no not FIRST, Ferst) http://www.ferstcenter.gatech.edu/

-Center for Puppetry Arts (very cool) http://www.puppet.org/

-CNN studio tours (neat-always wondered how they did that!)

-Georgia Tech Campus tours (fun)

The definite list
50 fun things to do in Atlanta
http://www.atlanta.net/50funthings/

Feel free to add to this list!

Good Luck this year!!!

Small correction..just in case

incorrect-Atlanta Motor Speedway (home of the Petit Le Mans sp?)

-Road Atlanta - Braselton, GA (home of the Petit Le Mans sp?)

There are also many things just on the outskirts of Atlanta that are great such as:

Callaway Gardens
Mall of Georgia - less than 10 miles from the Peachtree Regional
Fernbank Natural History Museum - Decatur
Emory University - Decatur
Atlanta Railway Museum - Duluth GA - Same city as the Peachtree Regional
Gwinnett Gladiators
much much more.

If you are driving in be sure to stop at the visitor's center as soon as you cross the state line. There are always many money saving coupons to almost everything that will be mentioned in this thread as well as for lodging and food.

see ya'll soon...

one restaurant every team needs to go to is the Varsity. You can't go to Atlanta withour going to the Varsity. :D

Exactly what kind of a restaurant is Varsity, and where is it located? Is it like a sports bar or something or like a Dick & Busters?

I think the varsity is the worlds only currently running car-hop.

The food is greasy fast food. It is directly across from Georgia Tech and the professors joke that they go to the varisty for a "coke and an oil change".

Seriously though, try the orange freeze thingy, its really good, and it's not deep fried...

Forgot about the Carlos Museum at Emory, they have one of the best mummy exhibits in the country. It's pretty cool, and free!

PM me if you have any questions,

Good luck ya'll!

Deffinately can help you with that... just your typical Hard Rock in the city cafe, nothing extravagent - but nonetheless, the best place on the planet! ;) Not a far walk at all from Olympic Park area.

For all who live in Atlanta, would this http://www.itsmarta.com/howto/special/frc.htm be worth it for each member of our team while we are down in Atlanta?

We are planning on coming in on the 14th to the airport and leaving that Sunday the 18th.

You guys are lucky that you're flying to ATL. But I'm sure 47 will have fun on our bus ride, It'll give us a chance to bond and get to know each other better.

How many of you are gonna be on spring break during the championship?

I'm a college student, and I'm on "spring" break right now. My team's high school, however, has spring break the week of the Championship.

MARTA is definately worth it if you are staying downtown.

Lemme explain, inner city Atlanta is pretty devoid of fun kiddy activities. So you're gonna need some form of transportation to get around. Nothing is gonna be within walking distance (probably) from your hotel. Atlanta is a very big city, that has sprawled considerably, the best entertainment is gonna be in the suburbs, example: clubbin=buckhead (a suburb about 5 mins from the Georgia Dome)

If you can plan your activities around the MARTA stops and stations, that is definately worth it. That pass is really inexpensive compared to what it usually is.

True, MARTA is not great public transportation but it is better then sitting in your hotel room playing cards...

This is especially good if you're flying into Hartsfield (the busiest ariport in the US) because you can take MARTA directly to your hotel. Otherwise it would be a $50 cab ride that could take up to 30-45 mins depending on our traffic. The MARTA pass is cheaper then buying a rail pass just to ride from the ariport to downtown.

Yes, we have both hardrock and planet hollywood. Atlanta is a BIG city, bigger then Houston, maybe the biggest city the Nationals have ever been held in before. Have Fun!!

Good luck yall!
