Has anyone had any strange IFI problems...

For some reason after clicking on download (after selecting the Hex file) my computer gets a blue screen of death... then reboots... It happens fairly quickly so I can't tell you what is reported on the blue screen...

I have a Toshiba Satellite, 512 MB Ram, 2.6 Ghz P4, XP Home SP1

??? lmk Thanks

I have never seen this. I use XP Home and have had no issues. Assuming your computer does not have a serial port, I would suspect your USB to Serial converter driver is at fault. Do a search for USB on these fori and you will find several threads which talk of problems with some converters.

Good luck.

I have had problems with the loader, too. In My case, a legacy device claims an IRQ that COM2 uses. But mine just locks up.

Common Troubleshooting Steps:
1. Check What port your cable is connected to, and what COM Loader is using
2. Change What port your using
3. Check your hardware settings (Turn FIFO buffers off, just in case)
4. Reboot
5. Reinstall IFI_Loader
6. Recompile
7. E-mail IFI. they're real nice.

Some not-so-common Steps:
8. Remove unnecesary hardware (Modems frequently take the place of a COM port)
9. Barrow your friend's boot drive and use that (put hex on floppy)
10. Try safe mode
11. Is it actually a COM port?
12. Remove COM Mice (Use PS/2 or USB, if you can)
13. Check Bot
14. Check cable

Blue Screen :ahh: ... It hapenned to me with some other hardware stuff, I re-installed XP, and it worked fine thereafter. Try that if nothing works.

I am using the usb to serial adapter... it turns out that I wasn't configuring the ifi app with the correct com port for the adapter. It was still weird getting that bsd... somewhere there is a bug to be squashed.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Just tried to switch from my laptop (working fine) to the computer in the shop for s/w development. The IFI_LOADER downloads the .hex file apparantly fine, but just as it is finishing we get stuck. Specifically:

the download window says "programming"
the terminal window pops up but displays nothing
the PROGRAM STATE light on the RC (EDURC in this case) stays orange
if I turn off then on the RC it's still orange

However, if I download the code from my laptop then use the shop computer IFI_LOADER to display the terminal window only (no download) it works fine.

Anybody seen this or have a suggestion? I will try a different com port when I go in later this morning, the computer has two.

Tried com2, no difference. Upgraded com driver, that didn't help either. Upgraded to most recent (1.07) IFI_LOADER, still same problem. Anybody got an idea?

I just got the blue screen and have been getting the blank terminal window for a while now. I have no idea what made it do that.

BillIs the OI on and either tethered or in radio contact to the RC? The prgram won't run unless the two are in contact, meaning the program state LED will be orange.

It's the EDU-RC (see above) so no tether, no OI.
It works fine (see above) with a different computer, so it's not an RC issue, except maybe as regards program download and serial port management.

I've had some strange results with our edubot and the IFI Loader. I often have to load the new code to the edubot 2 or 3 times before it will take. I've just learned never to assume it's my fault if the code doesn't fire up the first time. Anyone else seen this?

For the last two days, every time I try to download a program to the RC with IFI, I get this pop up dialoge box saying

Run Time Error '76':
Path Not Found

This is after I bring up IFI and browse for the .hex I want. It happens with any program, even ones I havent touched. Anyone know what this means and how to fix it?

Hmm, in one of the other IFI loader threads, this problem was caused because the COM port was incorrect. Have you checked that?

Could also be that you're exceeding the 64 character or so path limit - move it closer to the root of the drive.

Our IFI Loader just died on us.
It tries to download, and successfully finds the RC. After getting to the "Erasing: Device..." stage (which it does not do because the code is still on the robot) then the thing says "Not connected..." and the download button disappears. The PROGRAM STATE LED first blinks, goes solid and stays solid.
We've tried changing the COM ports, cables, rebooting the computer, turning the robot on and off. Everything short of reinstalling the software.
If you've heard of this and have a solution, anything please help!

*coughlinuxcough*.... anyway did you check the pins on the cable/port, have you tried a different computer. System specs/type of com ports (usb or built in) ext

Hmm.. I had this problem before and it was related to a change i had just made to my code.... No clue why.. but it was solved by unchanging the code.

The code was something like:

default_routine()
{
.....
if (something)
{
Put_Data();
return;
}
.....
Put_Data();
}

That doesnt make any sense... I have used Put_Data() out of its intended spot with no problem... Though it wasnt inside that function. Anyway the controler doenst debug code while downloading... It could have been an error with the origional compile though, or a corrupted hex file... Cheese_Head, did you try deleating the hex file and any ".o" files and recompiling it?

I've had desktop machines where the IFI_Loader installed just fine, if installed via Administrator or PowerUser.

On the laptop, it required the Administrator to install it, but won't run under PowerUser. Then the Program Files shows up only under the Administrator's start menu. What gives?

This is all under Win2K, not XP(uke).

IFI should release the source code to this baby, so people can make it better in the spirit of open source.

As for the start menu thing, make sure it is under all user's. And I agree with the source code thing. It's written in VB6, And I'm sure many people would like to add functionallity to it.
