View Full Version : FIRST Tailgating

O.K. ... it's late and I just finished checking the drawings that the students gave me today and I had an idea (don't know if it is good or bad yet, but we shall see). With all the crazy rules regarding food and drink at regionals and the Championship (the water one cracks me up), we should play their game. We will be at Chicago again this year and the Championship and I am thinking of planning a FIRST massive tailgate.

Think of it. Grills, lawn chairs, breakfast drinks and a bunch of crazy FIRSTers tailgating at 6:00am on Saturday morning. I am seriously thinking about planning something for Chicago and, if that goes well, the Championship.

What does everyone think of this idea?

Paul,

I think that is a wonderful idea.....too bad we'll be in Richmond and not Chicago.

Sounds like fun, Paul! I'm sure the FEDS would be willing to join in down in Atlanta.

That would be insanely cool. I would definitely be in on such an event at Atlanta.

DUDE! Im bringing The Grill :)

Good idea, Paul.

We will be out in the parking lot, east of Northwestern U stadium. We usually eat all of our meals out there, out of our TechnoKat trailer. We would love it if you or any other team would join us. We have never brought a grill, but that is a good idea.

Andy,

You lame pig farmer! I'm not talking about a bunch of dudes sitting around eating their packed lunches that Mommy made.

I'm talking about a good old fashioned tailgate! Smoke pouring out of the grill, people with painted faces running around wearing their favorite Jerseys (team shirts ... I still have my TechnoKat one). You get the point.

Besides, I don't want to do it at lunch. I want to do it before the competition on Saturday. Can you imageine how revved up everyone would be in the morning after a blowout tailgate (no smart remarks)?

Leon Machado IV
23-01-2004, 23:44
Would love to do it at the Manchester Regional. I can imagine a bunch of us out in front of the Verizon Stadium in 30-40 degree weather in shorts and wild shirts, sandles, whatever, BBQing and enjoying ourselves. We'd really screw a lot of people up. HAHA.

Paul Copioli
23-01-2004, 23:45
Now Leon gets it.

Maybe Andy should talk to you.

23-01-2004, 23:53
OK, you crazy italian...

I'll bring my bacon, hang it over a stick, and grill it to a crisp. I'll even have some eggs on a griddle and maybe some cornbeef hash. East parking lot... Saturday morning... be there.

I can see it: Bright, sunny Southern California day outside the LA Sports Arena. 80 degrees. Hibachis, lawn chairs, suntan lotion... :D

Aye James, I'll see you at the Peachtree bright and early with hot dogs and sausages for that grill. (And if that goes well we could head up some stuff at Championships. I'm sure there are some grills & bebeque places in Metro Atlanta that would be willing to help sponsor this with good food, but catering food to the parking lot might get on FIRST's nerves, so a power breakfast in Centennial Olympic Park might be better (of course it might be more funjust to cook it all ouerselves, but we'll give the tailgaiting breakfast a trial run when I see you in Gwinnett on March 19)).

Except for the people who drive down from San Jose to volunteer who will be inside, working. ;)

PS This year's pilgrimage to LA has not been confirmed, but I think it's very possible.

I believe this could be one of the biggest energizing events added to the FIRST environment. I may just be tempted to travel to a Regional this year to see it take place. The faces on locals would be worth a million dollars as they make their morning commute!

Hibachis

Hibachis - you're dating yourself.

Cyber Blue will be at Chicago and hopefully Atlanta.
We have a few of the Thermos "Grilles to go" that we will bring along.

Maybe Ritchie will donate a cow and we can supply the steak half of Steak & Eggs!!!!!!!!!!

PS for everyone - those grilles are great for travel - they fold small and
the LP is the small propsane bottles that are easy and safe to transport.

Tailgate at the Georgia dome? People will think the Bulldogs are playing, RIGHT ON!

Anne Shade
24-01-2004, 09:28
We'll be there for Peachtree too!!!

One thing about Championship though, there is no large parking lot and we couldn't do it in Olympic Park since the GWCC caterer also is the exclusive caterer for the park. We'll have to find a spot but it may not be on site. Just thought I would pass on the warning.

DUDE! Awesome idea, I'm not a morning person but I think that would definately be worth getting up that early for. I say we invent the FIRST tailgaters league right here and now, and have teams sign up to throw these bashes wherever possible. I also think that we could have mini competitions outside, for best torque and so on. Great idea, if it happens, I'll be there.

Man oh man that would be so funny to do at the Annapolis regional! I'd love to see the look on the Naval Academy people's faces. HAHA! What a sight...I can see it now. It'll most likely be cold here..but I can see everyone in hawaiian t-shirts/team shirts and shorts, running around goofing off during break...throwing frisbees, playing tag..ROFL perfect. :-D

We'll join you in Richmond, Grundy. You guys bring the hot dogs, cus were giving you our extra shaft of gearstock. Whos got the foreman? We would in Annapolis too, but the naval acadamy probably wouldnt be to happy with us.

Sean, I've got a foreman, but it isn't what you use for tailgating. We need someone to bring a real grill. Plus, foremans aren't made big enough to cook for a team.

The parking for the Academy was over at Navy and Marine Corps Memorial Stadium , a good place for a tailgate! I will do some research into tailgates there and report back...

Alright. So who can bring stuff to the Peachtree or The nats?
Stuff we need(add whatever else):
Grill
Gas or Charcoal
Lawn Chairs
Coolers
Frisbee
Lots if meat
LOTS of drinks
other assorted food
plates and whateva else like that
Trashcan

Anne Shade
25-01-2004, 09:42
Before you think of all this for Nats, you need to find a place that will not make the venue upset. YOu cannot do it in Olympic Park, you will get thrown out. I really would recommend getting in touch with your regional coordinator before doing this. I'm not trying to be a spoil sport, it is a great idea, but FIRST works hard to get us those venues and we shouldn't try to cause trouble by not asking first. Just my thoughts. Actually I have already contacted the Peachtree Regional Coordinator to find out.

Koko Ed
25-01-2004, 10:46
Even though the regional is happening in late March I suspect that it will be too cold to tailgate outside in Cleveland (even though I am a veteran Bills fan and go to many games, I really don't get much into tailgating anyways. I still have nightmares from the San Deigo game in December a couple of years ago and how my feet felt like lead at the end of the game. Man, that was cold!).

Alright. So who can bring stuff to the Peachtree or The nats?

I'm sure Team #538 (and all of our other friends from Alabama) would be more than willing to join you guys at Peachtree. :D We have some moms on our team that are excellent at procuring things like meat, drinks, plates, napkins, etc.

I'll bring it up today at the meeting and see what I can come up with.

Are you guys far enough away to be getting a hotel? We're staying in the Courtyard Marriot off of Pleasant Hill Rd. (near Gwinett Place) ... and I was wondering if any other teams might be there.

Amanda Morrison
25-01-2004, 13:51
Paul originally talked about Chicago - I think that's a great plan. There aren't a ton of places to eat around the university as it is (unless you want to take a hike for something other than hot dogs).

If you have it on ANY day, though, I would personally like to see something like this on Saturday before competition. Why? Because not only are you getting a bunch of the teams together on friendly ground for breakfast and a couple laughs, but maybe it'll take some of the tension away from the elimination rounds later that day. Although everyone is pretty wiped out on Saturday, I think it would work out best.

Oh yeah, and I'd be able to come, too. :)

TheShadow
25-01-2004, 17:14
I'd love to see if anyone could even survive Tailgating at GLR. Knowing Michigan (especially Ypsi) weather, it'd be 70 and sunny Saturday, and snowing Sunday...but it would be fun to see the whole EMU parking lot filled with smoke.

Awsome idea!!! I'm up for it at all the Regionals I'm going too (Manch, Anna and Philly). But lets all pull the real-deal in Atlanta and fire up those grills!

Well for atlanta at least, lets also turn it into a 'beach party' and have volleyball nets up and bathing suits on :D

The naval academy does not allow tailgating, even at the stadium (unless there is football game). However, you may be able to ask for permission to tailgate at the stadium before the event.

Dave here from 931 out of STL, we'll be at the chicago regional and the st. louis regional.
I think we'll be able to bring a grill to both but i will check and see
I know my family has a grill and trailer i dont know if we can tow it with the bus Depends on the weather
or as our School likes to call it "Inclement Conditions"
Anyway
I think i can bring a grill big enough for about 35-50 hot dogs at once, so if any teams want to participate all they would need is to bring the meat and we can grill it up
Also, bring sodas, and what not, like Amanda said Saturday is a good idea

For st. louis, are there any teams willing to do this?, there is LOTS of room at the Family Arena or we could meet at the nearest hotel, or whatever, we'll check into it, but are there anyteams that would like to do this at St. Louis also???, If so e-mail me

Team 1163 will be attending the Midwest regional and it sounds like a great idea. Since the Midwest doesn't have a social event this sounds like something that would be great for team spirit as well as a good social time for all concerned. We travel far but can pack needed items. I'm not sure about a grill (too messy) but we can always provide other amenities!

I have a feeling this should topic should start anew and be split up for each different regional.

I think it's a great idea, and would be fun at any regional, and cheaper than buying food inside.

Please.. those of you willing to organize this at a regional you are attending, make a new thread titled with the Regional and something mentioning Tailgate Party.
