Our team was having a "discussion" about the weather and so forth as the chesapeake regional. As the only team coming from Florida, there is much concern about the heating at the event. Does any one know if they heat the hanger, or what ever the event is held in?
Thanks!

Wear a sweater :D
As for us northern folk who are travelling south for the Chesapeake Regional (I for one have yet to wear more than a fleece, hat, and cotton gloves when walking outside in below zero), our bodies are acclimated to the cold. Regardless of how the place may be heated... we'll be wearing Ts.
But my guess is that it should be at least 60 degrees in there.

coming from baltimore and knowing the place. it will be either rather warm or rather cold. depending on what it is outside. most places in maryland like cranking the heat when it is cold and cranking the cold when it is the slightest bit warm. I say bring a sweatshirt but also a t-shirt. that way you are prepared

We hope it's 60° here in the middle of March! I hate to tell you Nathan, but MD weather is slightly unpredictable. Last year we lucked out and had the nicest weekend of weather for the month of March the weekend we had the event. Plan right now for highs in the upper 50's.
The event itself, is held in Halsey on the Academy. Halsey is a rather large venue, but once it gets packed with people, robots and tools, it will be plenty warm. Your only problem will come in the mornings when you going to the event. Other than that, as Erin said, bring a sweater and you'll be fine.
This is a great event in one of the more (in my opinion) spectacular locations. We're 2 blocks away from the center of Histroic Downtown Annapolis, and the Academy is just differnet than just about any of the other venues. I might be just a little biased because i work accross the river and see the Academy daily. Your team will have a great time in the "Sailing Capital of the World," and we hope to see you here.

I was completely comfortable there last year in just our team tee-shirt (well, okay, I had on pants and socks and shoes as well) and I'm almost always cold (space heater running full blast as I type). You should be fine with a jacket or a sweatshirt.
Heidi
Halsey Field House (http://www.usna.edu/usnaathletics/halsey.htm) is the Academys indoor track and field house. They can heat it, but it will not likely be needed.
Recomendation: Bring a light jacket and a sweatshirt. It can get chilly at night if you head into town for dinner. We also tend to get some unpredictable rainstorms that come through real fast and can catch you unaware. Like Steve said, plan for it to dip into the 50s at night, but be in the 60s, mayhaps low 70s durring the day.

Okay, great!
Many of us native Floridians think it is cold if it goes below 70... so this should be interesting.
I used to live in the DC area.. a few years ago, so I am not as "addicted" to the warm weather yet. Although, it was 80 here two days earlier!

I am from southern Mississippi so i feel your pain. Wear a sweater or a light jacket because last year they had some doors open. Plus the Naval Acadeamy is on the water so it will be breezy. Additionally all of the resturants are on the water so yes it gets COLD.

speaking of chesapeake, are there any true small ball pickers competing? I'm totally avoiding studying for a calculus exam so I went through all of the websites of teams attending and saw zero dedicated small ball pickers.. I know there's at least one, *wink*, and team 16 seems to have some form of small ball eater also, but all of those wheels just confuse me.

Team 1083 is a true "ball picker". We can hold about 4 balls at a time, and can easily manuver around the field to get them and unload them.

I went to Chesapeake last year and I thought it was pretty warm in that gym, but then again, I am from near Philly, so anything above 50 right now is pretty nice.

If you did not already get the e-mail about buses on base, then you most likely haven't heard that the air conditioning for Halsey Field House was damaged by the hurricane last fall, so it's most likely going to be pretty warm in the there since the outside temps are supposed to be in the mid to high 50s.

Well, that's unless it's a week like this week. Yesterday got up to 65, today has been snowing and sleeting all day (I'm north of B-more.) at least we're not getting slammed by all the snow headed up north.

Its 9:45 here about an hour outside of Baltimore, DC and Annapolis and it is snowing wooohoooo. I think it may be a littly nippy this weekend. :ahh:
I don't get it. And by it I mean this Mid-Atlantic weather. I've lived here for my entire life and still don't understand our weather patterns. It was 60 degrees last week and I was out in shorts and a t shirt, but right now its been snowing the past 3 days. Now it is a wet snow, and only sticks to cars and the grass, normally melting during the day, but its still coming down white. I wish it were either always snowing or always warm. Then again a nice 60-70 degree climate year round would rock.
Enough of my rambling, as for my advice on attire:
1) It's not yet warm enough up here to only wear shorts. If you wear pants it will never be uncomfortable.
2) Don't rule out the long sleeve shirts. It's a nice medium between short sleeve and sweatshirt.
3) A heavy winter coat isn't necessary, however a nice hooded sweatshirt comes in handy, especially with the wet climate during this time of year.
4) Wear layers. Tshirt with a sweatshirt over it will normally take care of you.
All in all, and correct me anyone if I'm wrong, a good attire for this weather is pants with a tshirt and hooded sweatshirt. It REALLY does vary from day to day up here.
Hope I didn't just ramble on foolishly.

I guess that seems resonble for most people. It really depends on the weather you are used to. I would say that many people coming south for the competition would gladly wear shorts this upcoming weekend.
So much for packing shorts :ahh:
I think there are several people who will be wearing shorts. I would if I was going, but that doesn't say too much. Many people know me for wearing shorts year round, even as the temperature drops below 0. The Floridians would probably think I'm crazy.
Oh, wait, everyone else already thinks I'm crazy.
I'd be wearing whatever was clean :p . Shorts, pants, it's all the same for me. I've worn my bathing suit in the snow cause I didn't want to get my pants all wet. However the southerners will most likely find it to be freezing, relative to what they are used to, especially on the Chesapeake where there tends to be a cool breeze. Oh, and that nasty storm that's coming our way.

We don't need to into that discussion. I make snow angels while in my bathing suit...in my bathing suit cause I have a hot tub...and it feels good to lie in the snow after jumping out of the hot water.

I can't really comment on chesapeake as much as I would like to, as I was working on the robot practically all day long.. at around 3ish we learned we were 143 pounds, and by 7:55 we were down to 128. crazy times. I did talk with 1083 for a while, their bot is even cooler in person- they broke some pvc during a practice round but it appeared to be a minor wound.

That was a brilliant move on Finney's part- picking 16. Every round 16 would herd 5 balls, cap the large goal, and hang- those two combined for the highest score so fat- 210

it was a VERY close match. first round 1405 and 16 won by a lot, then second round 449 hung and 16 lost power so 222's aliance beat us. third round 1405 hung, while 16 capped and hung. it was awesome.
BTW i am the driver for 1405. to clear up any misunderstandings our principle promised us finances for atlanta so here we come!!!

Or my favorite, Orbitz. However, I don't notice much difference between the different travel sites, at least not nearly as much as there used to.
Depending on flight times and days, as well as airports, it's between $294 and $650 round trip.
Its Generally much cheaper to fly from Buffalo then Rochester, however, I found the best deals on Airtran, from Rochester (and pretty good ones from Buffalo, too).

Can anyone confirm what team won the Saturday Judges Award #2? The FIRST site lists the team as 1391, but calls the team "NASA/BellSouth Pioneers/Greenville County Schools & Hillcrest High School & Mauldin High School", which is team 1319. Team 1391 is NASA/VanguardID Systems & Westtown School (and my alma mater).

Congratulations to the winners at the Chesapeake Regionals today! 1405, you guys are an inspiration to every rookie team. There were some seriously exciting matches with robots going into all out physical attack.
Unfortunately, we lost in the quarter-finals but we're not too upset since we're going to nationals anyway. I can't wait to see everyone in Atlanta. (Especially team 25, we need to have another 16-player Halo rematch :p )

close final matches guys. Nice solid alliance. Well, winning a regional and finalist in another, ill take that :) . It was 222, 303, and 291. Chesapeake was a great regional yet again, I hope that the Maryland administration dosent shut it down and keeps the regional going! (In case you don't know, NASA funded the regional for two years, then after that the state would have to take over if it was successful enough. I hope it was!)
Good job 1405, 16, 446!
Edit: One thing I found interesting was that all 3 teams on our alliance won an award that afternoon. 291: website - 222: Motorola - 303: GM design.

1: I would just like to say great job to everyone first off. I had a great time. :D
there were some really great robots out there. and is it just me or do all the rookie teams seem to be doing really well this year? its really exciting to see so many rookie teams do as well as the have been.
2: Hey i have a question. does anyone know what happened to that guy who passed out during the awards. i was really worried about him. just wanted to know if he was alright.
3: i am suffering from withdrawal. i miss my robot. its all alone in its box now.:(
thanks again to teams 291 and 222. way to keep the pineapple spirit alive lol. thanks guys.

3: i am suffering from withdrawal. i miss my robot. its all alone in its box now.
The worst part for me is that in the hustle and bustle of packing for the bus (we were sharing a bus with team 25), I had forgotten to call fedex for the pickup of the robot until after we got back to the high school, at which point fed ex freight was closed. now that I'm about to crash, I just need to write myself a note to call tomorrow because I am B-E-A-T
Despite long lines, however, I was VERY pleasantly surprised with the foodservice at the Dry Dock. MUCH easier to get more healthy food than at Trenton (blech).
Overall, our team learned a lot at this regional, and even though we suffered from mechanical failures in three rounds (our drive system was whacked), we had a blast!
We tried our little "Got Glow?" experiment for the first time at the regional, and for some people it seemed to catch on. More often than not, however, we found ourselves picking up the glowsticks that people left on the ground, so we may be hesitant to try it again. It was pretty cool to watch from the field though!

I wrote down 1391 while watching in the stands.
This is by far, my favorite regional. Well run, nice space layout for the pits, easy access to and from the stands, and places to eat right out the door. Plus, we were allowed to bring water into the pits. I just hope that each team had enough GP to clean up their area so they will continue to allow us to bring in food. The MC was amazing, the DJ played the CD we gave him, the machine shop was so helpful and even gave one of our students (the one who will be attending the Academy starting in June) a tour. And there is no prettier panoramic view than stepping out the door and seeing the harbor.
Congratulations to all the teams. You made this event so much fun.

you have the flight info for our flight, If you guys are going that same trip with us from Buffalo, We'll make some room on our charter bus to and from our school. You can even leave your cars in our parking lot like the rest of us. I am so proud of you guys. It's nice to have a 340 alum running the team, driving the robot, being an awesome role model. Keep me informed about what you are planning.
Oh & did a catch a grrrrreat in there? lol. Nice job bud.

Or a really big safety hazard. Or both. Just the same, it looked really cool.

we didn't know how much room there would be for all of them to Poi (that's what the swinging around on wires is called), and we didn't have enough chains for everyone, so we just went with 2 or 3 people to do that, and we had everyone else going through a bit of a routine while the others hit the "drums". Sadly, we were in a dead zone as far as sound was concerned. We could barely hear them from the driver's station in front of the stands.

You can barely hear anything from the drivers stations. :p
Anyway, I ended up doing team queing, so if you were on your teams flight crew, then you saw me being all bossy and telling you where to go. :p
Thursday we were running on time almost all day, with periods of delay to try to fix the faulty ball drop. Friday we got behind with robot and field problems early, and ended the day 5 matches behind. Saturday we started about 15 minutes early, and ended about 5 minutes late. By late Saturday almost all the teams had figured out the flow and it ran real smoothly.
A question for teams at Annapolis: How did we do?
Other then that, good job to Steve and Trystan, the lead annimators for 116 on another Visualization Award! Great matches from all the teams, and to 1420 for the perfect FIRST attitude.

An odd thing I noticed, team 16 won the Regional Chairman's Award according to the link. They won the Chairman's Award in 2000 (I believe). Now, I was under the impression that with the new Regional Chairman's Award system, previous Chairman's Award winners weren't supposed to win it again. Did I misunderstand something or what?

How many people would be interested in getting a video of Dave Lavery's speech?
If the demand is high enough I might make it available for streaming and/or (a large) download.
If anybody is going to Drexel this week I could put it on CD-R's and give it to you directly. Just ask.

copy from Hall of fame submission post:
I am from team 16 and I apologize for any confusion. At the moment, I am a little confused also. I can not find any documentation that clearly states that past chairman's award winning teams can or cannot compete at regionals. Can someone send me a copy of this letter? As far as I know, we have not recieved a letter that says we cannot submit a chairmans award presentation to a regional. The only thing I have found close to this is in the FIRST hall of fame fact sheet, that says "teams are not able to win anoher Chairman's Award, and the Hall of Fame applications will receive separate review by a panel of judges." The assumption is that this pertains only to championships as the rest of the document pertains to championships. I think the judges at Chesapeake would have informed us if this was not allowed unless there was some miscommunication. Judges at St. louis also inquired of our chairman's submission. Does anyone know of documentation that clarifies this that I am unaware of??? Thanks for your help.
