View Full Version : How an Engineer solves a Rubik's Cube
So we were arguing about where the battery was suppost to go on the bot tonight, and we got tired of it and decided to solve a rubik's cube. This is how the process went.

I don't know about that ... it seems that it would be much easier just to peel off the sitckers and re-apply in the "correct" place.
Yes......YES......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Nicely done. I once wrote a BASIC(eww) program to solve a virtual rubik's cube.

I've done that before...

Me too.
And Stu, once you peel the stickers off, they never stick the same anymore.

That's how a technician solves a Rubik's Cube, an engineer solves it this way: http://jpbrown.i8.com/cubesolver.html ;)

That is awesome...Wow.

And Stu, once you peel the stickers off, they never stick the same anymore. Not true, you just have to get the right kinda of glue to make it look right.
that's what i did :D
*hangs head in shame*

You beat me to posting that link. If I ever had a lot of free time ... I'd like to build one too (since I know how to solve a Rubik's cube .... it wouldnt be too hard to program my logic).

soooo...how does a human solve a rubik's cube? j/k i just insulted myself as a future engineer :-/ but isn't there some mathematical technique or something... i can't locate the link... i've personally never owned or considered solving a cube...

now... yall see... yall made the mistake in taking it apart... and putting it back together.... some of yall even rearranged the stickers.... i simply took ALL the stickers off for good.... so no matter which way i turned it, i won!!! hehe :P

This is probably the most easily understood technique: http://jeays.net/rubiks.htm#sol2

That's the most logical way to solve the rubik's cube in my eyes.... :D

Since this thread is so old I figured I'd throw in some links to more recent threads about the rubix cube.

that's great...my friend does the same thing, except he never gets it back together without breaking the individual squares

That is the only way I have ever solved a Rubiks Cube.
I never had the patience to sit around and try to solve the Rubix Cube. My attention span is about 2 minutes. Then I would get bored with it and walk away and do something else! :D

I have solved the cube in all three ways mentioned...
When I was little I tried the move the stickers bit...my dad got mad at me and said that I was going to mess it up because moving the stickers would make it so it would never be solvable...but he wasn't very smart...or he just thought I wasn't going to finish with the job...seeing that I was probably 5 or 6 with a little kid attention span.
I have since taken one apart and reassembled it...I also saw someone drop a cube...and one of the corner pieces came off...they put it back on in the wrong orientation...so they got the whole cube done...except the corner piece needed to be removed and rotated.
And for a while a couple years ago, I memorized those sequenced moves and could solve it that way given a few minutes. Since then I have failed to continue the cubing and have lost the memorized instructions and haven't bothered with them since.
The Rubik's cube is a fun and nifty toy that everyone should return to their coffee tables for people to toy with while acting the guest (it is always fun to solve the cube while they are not in the room and just leave it on the table solved).
