If I recall I think it makes little "lightning bolts" or at least some good size sparks.

It is a generator, and when charged to a capacitor it can generate over 20,000 volts. Pretty cool.

To much free time!?!?! Nah, This is 3 months old now i belive. Carpentry just completed the stand to hold it friday, mind you it has 0 nails or screws in it.

what is a whimhurst machine

A Wimshurst Machine (http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/wimshurst/wims.html) (also known as a Whimhurst machine) is an electrical generator that preceeded van de Graaf generators, and was used to produce extremely high potentials. Lots of fun when connected to a pair of Leyden jars to store a very high charge.
