Custom programming cable

We liked to make up our own custom programming cable, can we do it with only using transmit data, recieve and signal ground (2, 3, 5) or do we need all 9 pins? Also does it use it use hardware flow or software flow.

Why?

All you need are the TXD, RXD, and GND wires, but I really see no point in making one...
