...what is a safe method of removing the globe motor gearbox?

Umm. not removing it. I have no suggestions, but I'd like to point out that I'm pretty sure the globe gearbox is considered part of the globe motor, so any modifications of it are illegal. So unless you're just taking it apart to grease it up, I'm not sure why you'd want to....

If you guys had read the rules you wouldnt be feeding this poor guy false information.

<R62> "The gearboxes for the Fisher-Price, Drill, and Globe motors are not considered “integral” and may
be separated from the motors. FIRST will not provide replacement for parts that fail due to

Use a small diameter punch to press the roll pins in about 5 mm or so. After you have all 3 pushed in enough to clear the gearbox housing, you can simply remove the motor from the gearbox.

Don't lose the roll pins if you want to get it back together again.

YOu can make anymods that dont affect the motor itself, as I recall. You can even drill out the body if you don't touch the guts of it. Gearboxes are fair game.
