Guts? I doubt it, it is a pre-manufactured part and definitly not on the additional parts list. why not just study and measure the components and build the same thing yourself with aluminum??

Follow the part use flow chart. I think you would be allowed to use it, provided it is under the cost limit

Too bad there isnt an additional parts list! Only flowchart telling what can and cant be used. Next time, dont guess if you dont know the answer.
FIRST in the past hasnt discriminated against store bought items. Things such as premade gearboxes help to level the playing field, to some degree.
Oh, one thing the previous poster left out is that the part must be under $400 USD, which I'm sure a car jack is.

If it uses hydraulics or pneumatics then no, otherwise it would be legal.

Q: Would a door-closer limit device such as those found at http://builders-hardware.aubuchonhardware.com/door_hardware/door_closer.asp be considered legal to use on the robot?
A: If it operates hydraulically, or employs a piston displacing air in a cylinder, it is not permitted.

If it uses hydraulics or pneumatics then no, otherwise it would be legal. I'll be a little more specific. A hydraulic or pneumatic jack by itself is not illegal. You can jack your car up and down all day without breaking any FIRST rules. It would be illegal if you put the entire hydraulic or pneumatic jack on your robot. It would not be illegal if you used only the non-hydraulic or non-pneumatic parts of the jack on your robot.
I think my post did the opposite of what I intended. I have made this more confusing haven't I.
Maybe you just tell us exactly what parts you will be using and we say yes or no.
its a crank scissor jack, so all we would have to do is attach a motor to the crank part. all we need to knoe is if that would be legal

Based on the q and a, I would think that such a device would be legal...seeing as how your standard variety manual scissor jack doesn't use pnuematics or hydrolics ;-)

This is what he is talking about, and yes you can use it.
