You did try to search the member list (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/memberlist.php?do=search) first, and contact people from these teams via that, correct?

Please don't barrage these forums with multiple post looking for scouting info on different teams. Do your research. Most team have website or e-mail. There are scouting networks which you can check out to. It looks lazy just to post multiple similiar post instead of looking. Soap has all the regionals team list up. You can find if they have a website. Great way to scout. You can search the previous post. Many teams have posted teasers. Or you can find a e-mail or PM a member of the teams you are asking for. You are more likely to get an answer that way. Most teams will not respond to a post such as this asking to give up their robots design and secrets. Another route would to post a picture(s) of your teams robot and start a discusission. More teams will be willing to share their robot with you if you share yours first. Just some suggestions.

We were told to use the scouting forums to find teams. Scouting is an important part of FIRST and any team that is unwilling to work with other teams is not being graciously professional.

I think ngreen was concerned that people were posting 'hey team _______, contact us' type messages, instead of going out and trying to find the teams information beforehand.
I think posting a thread like that should be used as a last resort. The memberlist is searchable by team #, and you can find a few members from almost each team mentioned in this thread. After that, the FIRST (http://www.usfirst.org/) website can be used to find the teams' websites, and contact information to follow. And then if after all of that you come up with no information, a 'hey team _______, contact us' type thread would be appropriate.
Just my opinion...

Brandon,
Many of the teams that we are looking for do not have web sites and are not registered here but that does not mean that they do not browse here and we need to contact those teams. In fact to qualify to travel our kids are required to scout other teams and ChiefDelphi was seen as a good resource.

The only reason I mentioned it was because the first few teams I searched for came up with many people registered on the forums:
+-------------+-------------------+
| team_number | number_registered |
+-------------+-------------------+
| 0872 | 1 |
| 0883 | 2 |
| 0891 | 11 |
| 0936 | 4 |
| 1001 | 1 |
| 1008 | 7 |
| 1015 | 19 |
| 1018 | 30 |
| 1317 | 7 |
+-------------+-------------------+
No big deal, though .. I wonder if the FIRST Scouting Network can help us out somehow, to make this process easier ..

No big deal, though .. I wonder if the FIRST Scouting Network can help us out somehow, to make this process easier ..I remeber Jack was talking about starting a big database but that's an awful lot of work for one guy during the build season. Our kids have their hands full looking for three ot four teams with teams of two. It'll get harder each year with the addtion of more and more teams. It'll require a dedicated group, most likely outside a team, who isn't tied down to building a robot.
scout during practice. Pictures traded online only help so much. Work more on your strategy. Figure out who the vets are before regionals, teams that have always been good. Scouting is supposed to be fun at the regional not in your spare time online! :D

Ed,
We seem to go through this issue every year. We appreciate the fact that your team has standards for scouting, but perhaps a little more guidance is needed for the students.
Definetly, make sure they start with the FIRST website. I've seen a few cases where people post here for information on a team with contact information on thier website.
Next, show them how to search for members of chiefdelphi. It's gotten more complicated with the upgrade to VB3, so maybe they need more guidance. As Brandon has been diligently pointing out, there are many cases where people are posting before searching for members.
Next, they should use google. Its amazing what type of press coverage or other stuff that can give you contact information.
Lastly, they should post here. If they can't find contact information for multiple teams, they should have all of them listed in the same thread. Also in that thread, they should detail what methods they used to find the team.
One other thing, whomever has access to TIMS on your team can get contact information for any team (or so I'm told). Perhaps you should make that information availible to your students after they show a certain amount of effort in finding that information on their own.

I'll relay the info to our scout leader.
