Ok, we are in a tight spot.... I made a 30-second music clip using Goldwave, it fits perfectly with my animation. Anyways, what I did was use 5-15 sec clips from different songs (Thousand Foot Krutch "Rawkfist", Yellowcard "Only One", and Black Hawk Down Soundtrack "Chant"). I modiyfied the songs beyond reconigntion (took out lyrics, increased bass, crossfades, fade in-outs, etc.) and I am wondering if that would count as an original peice or do I have to obtain the copyrights for each song?

I always thought that if you use clips from songs then you don't have to pay copyrights or anything (since radio stations do this with 20-30 sec "hooks") and that if I modifyed them so much that it sounds like one song, then its fine. But its confusing....If length does apply, then these are the lengths that the songs are used in the animation:

"Only One" - 6 secs
"Rawkfist" - 15 secs
"Chant" - 9 secs

Anyone please respond quickly, I already searched the boards and tried searching the BMI website, but nothing clear came up....

I'm not sure if you have it, but if you could msg me on AOL Instant Messanger (screenname = RFosgate15Subs), I'm sure I could help you out. It'd be nice to talk with you about this, because I was in this predicament last year :/

I'm not sure if you're allowed to use clips of copywrited music because as far as I know, you're not supposed to use any copywrited music. I could be wrong though.

If you get permission (See how it talks about attaching a permission) then you can use it. Since you still used their songs, it's still their work and you have to pay for the permission to use it. You may get lucky and not have to pay them.

"Only One" - 6 secs
"Rawkfist" - 15 secs
"Chant" - 9 secs....

Ok, i hapen to be an expert in this field.

If you use any more than "10 seconds" of an audio clip, it is considdered copyright infringement. So long as you use under 10 seconds, and give credit, and state intention of educational purposes only, you will be fine.

I've attached the Copyright Music Information that is posted on Streamline. I'm sure if Autodesk allowed you to use small clips of music they would've mentioned it in this document (like they mentioned how some music made before 1922 is considered public domain). They also include:

Once again, it is best to use original music when in doubt.

I think it'd be best not to use those clips without any written consent attached to the rest of your forms.
