How can I show dimensions in the drawing (.idv) files in Autodesk 7?

You have to make a new "paper" file, its the icon that looks like a tan paper. Then you go to place componet and find you file. You can choose the scale and such in there. Then place it where you want. You may project the drawlings to top, front, and isometric if you wish. Then on the left hand tool bar, click the gray box above the place compent thing, there should be an option to go into drawling mode or something like that. When you click on that, the icons below will change and you will see general desmsion. Then you just click on the lines and drag them out.

If you want to measure it in the actual file drawling, you can just right click and go down to measure. Click on the lines you want to measure and it will give you the distance.

Sorry I don't have Inventor infront of me so the terminlogy is off, hopefully that helped. I will have Inventor back tomorrow, if you have any questions.

Thanks for the reply. I think I've interpreted your directions correctly. I've opened an .idw drawing, placed a base view, and opened a draft view (which puts it in sketch mode). Neither auto dimension nor general dimension do anything, however. I have tried both .iam and .ipt files, and neither work. What am I doing wrong?

Ok here is what you do, open the drawling you made first. Then go to new and a Standard.idw. On the lefty hand side there is a panel called "Drawing Views Panel," under that there is a button called base view. Click on that, and a window will pop up. If you only have the file you want demesions on, then you should not have to find the file, otherwise click on the button with the folder and the maginifing glass and get your file. Then click ok, and drag the image that opens to where you want it. Then you may click on the Projected View option that is under base view, and drag out the top, front, and isometeric view. After that click on the Drawing Views Panel," and a drop down menu should appear, click on the "Drawing Annotation Panel. The first option under that is General Dimension. Click click on what you want to show dimensions for and drag them out. I hope that helped futher clarify. I'll try to get some images for you in a step by step format.

is there a way onn the .idw to have the computer auto demension all the demensions correctly? im too lazy to type in all of the demensions myself and i just want to computer to do it for me! PLEASE help me out, i need an A in the class i have it in!

I'm having fun with this ScreenRecorder program. You really should watch the tutorial that Elgin mentions, but if you want a quick intro then.... I'd use the Ordinate Dimension set, choose your points and then right click and select "create". It's that simple. All the dimensions whould be the same as the part you made, and if you change your part, the drawing will update automatically. :)

You can use the auto dimension feature, but that is extremely inefficient, so I wouldn't reccomend it,
