Does anyone know definatively the answers for the following questions? "Are the mobile goals associated with a particular alliance?" "Could one alliance take both mobile goals in a match and have control of them at the end?" There is much to ponder depending on the answers to these two questions.
It appears that there is one mobile goal for each alliance. so there is a blue and a red mobile goal

One is red and the other is blue regardless of where they are at. They have a different color of plastic in the bottom.

This is really two questions: Can a team physically control/posess both mobile goals? and Does physical posession of a goal affect the scoring?
Yes, you can grab, move and "posess" one or both mobile goals. Drag them both to your end of the field. Shove the red goal to the blue end of the field. Put "your" goal to your opponents end, and vice versa. Control them both from the very beginning of the game to the end, or ignore them completely for the entire match. Do what ever you want (as long as you don't damage them or go underneath), and there is no problem.
Scoring of the balls contained in the goals is entirely independent of the "posession" of the goals. All balls contained in the red goal (the one with the red bottom) will be scored for the red alliance, no matter which end of the field it is on or who controls the goal at the end of the game.
So, yes, you should be thinking about strategies that grab both goals, drag them to your end of the field, and allow you to easily control the scoring of points into either mobile goal. In this way you can have significant control over the overall match score (and drive up those qualifier points).

Thanks Dave, this is very useful. I was not sure from the manual description or the kickoff. Now we have some serious strategizing to do about after the bot is gone!

Some of these questions are best answered before you build your robot. I'm a big fan of knowing what I want my robot to do before I build it.

:) Most strategies go to pot when you actually run a few practice rounds anyway.
Here's an interesting question: Since I compulsively modelled the field for our 3D animation, I know that FIRST's pictures show the mobile goals always to the right of their respective color sides, looking toward the center of the field (see bad text diagram below)
------------------BLUE MOBILE GOAL----------------
RED PLATFORM CENTER PLATFORM BLUE PLATFORM
------------------RED MOBILE GOAL------------------
Will they always be set up in this order or could it be like this:
-------------------RED MOBILE GOAL----------------
RED PLATFORM CENTER PLATFORM BLUE PLATFORM
-------------------BLUE MOBILE GOAL----------------

FIRST stated in the Q&A that the red mobile goal will always be on the red alliances right (and the type-1 IR beacon for that matter).
The blue mobile goal will always be on the blue alliances right.
