I ran a search (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/search.php?) for the term "battery" (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/search.php?searchid=70021) and came up with all of these results.

I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for there. Twice, probably. Maybe even three times. ;)

You can also build the batteries. Just go and get some 1.2 volt AA sized (probably somewhere around 700 mAh) NIMH cells, and solder 6 of them together (positive to negative with leads), and presto! You have a battery pack.

i was wondering... is the backup battery realy nessesary? could a variable voltage regulator at 7.2 volts (connected to the 12v main) do the same thing? or could we just not connect it at all to save weight... i have seen no diffrence in functionalty with it connected vs not connected. maybe im just slow

That would work, but you can't use that battery with NiMH cells in competition. You could use NiCad, though.

Q: Can we use a battery pack that we assembled ourselves, using 6 AA NiMH cells? They have the same voltage (1.2V x 6) as NiCad cells, but more capacity (1600AH) and no memory effect.
A: No. See R39.

you can find the Offical FIRST/IFI edu- Battery for $7 @ IFI (http://www.innovationfirst.com/FIRSTRobotics/edu-electrical.htm). The battery is included in the inspection sheet posted at the 2004 Inspection Sheet (http://www2.usfirst.org/2004comp/2004_Robot_Inspection_checklist_draft.pdf) so i would reccommend you have it at the comps. The battery powers any Servo motors you would use and also it will keep your bot from completly dieing if your main battery disconnects.
