View Full Version : Regional Webcasts
NASA webcasters are going to attempt Portland and Richmond this weeK
Real Media links from the robotics.nasa.gov page should appear Thursday Afternoon, and be in use on Friday and Saturday. The NASA Robotics Education project is providing this service at no cost to FIRST.
We have expectations to be able to Webcast Central Florida, PeachTree and
Silicon Valley and the Nationals in coming weeks. Thanks to all of you who volunteered to help-out - sorry that we didn't get the ball rolling sooner on this - but 26 regionals has everyone scrambling.
I am off to Portland - can't wait!!!

Will either of these be broadcast on the NASA TV channel?
Thanks, this is an awesome service for everyone in FIRST. Have fun in portland, I'm sure it'll be great.

There is already a thread on this topic

I am so glad they are atleast websacting some of the events... too bad they arn't televising any tho :( especially since I finally get NASA tv... but HEY!! at least now I got something to do during study hall on friday! :D
Sorry no NASA-TV until the Nationals. Those satellite trucks (and satellite time) is expensive. I.E. about four teams per event. :(

Just want to copy DJ's link to the VCU regional website. The webcast on that has been working for me.

Where do I find the Pacific NW Regional webcast or archive? Everywhere I look it gives me an "Inaccurate Link requested" error.

I'm uncertain if there is an archive of it. I certainly can't find one at the moment. I, personally, recorded all of Saturday's event. I failed completely at finiding reliable software to record it on Friday, but thems the breaks. If you want Saturday's stuff I can probably snail-mail it to you in a CD.
They are not up yet. - And because of an equipment failure and the fact I had to leave before the event was over, I don't know if there is an archive of the Pacific NW. We usually have tapes, but this year the only people with tapes are FIRST. We may get copies - but typically this is after the season is over. I will check to see if there is an archive of Richmond.
Even if the event was archived I will have to do a LOT of editing. The finals
took forever and there was a lot of trouble with the field.

So, when will the urls to these regionals be uploaded? Sorry if I seem a bit rash, I just cannot wait until UCF. :D

Richmond is in the works - hopefully, the Elimination rounds will be posted later today by the Langley folks http://robots.larc.nasa.gov - they probably will post some stills too!
Once the real media archive are up we will move them to a faster realmedia server.
No word on Portland yet ----- still waiting for the laptop to come in!

Real Player required - you can get it off the link page.

After some digging around old links for regional webpages, I found this:
http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/robotics/first/ucf-regional-2004/
I cannot wait to see this regional! It is definite one of my favorite things to do during FIRST season. Always great to see the Florida robots play the game competitively.
http://robotics.nasa.gov/first/2004/portland.htm
I May have missed one - There are 12 clips here and I know there was at leat one TIE during the Finals!
Actually, I think there are more than 1 missing Portland videos.
Some of the quarter finals are in the semifinals list. And there are at least two missing quarter finals (one with my team 948 in it and one with someone else). In addition the first 492 vs. 948 semifinal is missing.

In addition, the final match in the finals is missing.
O.K. I'll check it out.
One of the missing semi-final matches is at:
rtsp://explorer.arc.nasa.gov/Archive/FIRST/2004/PNW/hf5a.rm
The problem here is that there are two big two hour real media files and no (REAL)ly good tools to edit out the important parts. I will do a final better edit later on in the week.

Thanks NASA KSC Science Internet Team! Unsung FIRST heros IMHO.
BTW FIRSTies - Over 1000 different computers played the live webcast of Central Florida. Stay tuned to this thread for details on PeachTree, and Silicon Valley webcasts. So Cal is still a possibility - but not looking too good.

anything about this weeks regionals??
Thought I mentioned it - should have Peachtree at the link in the previous post. Won't be up till Thursday some time I suspect. Upcomming webcasts include Silicon Valley and perhaps Buckeye - no details yet on the links for these.

Hey all, apparently the Houston webcast is back on again. This time for real. I imagine it'll be linked at the robotics.nasa.gov page like all the others, but I thought y'all would like to know.
Thanks again Kevin. I can't really say how much I appreciate this. Now all I have to do is secure a laptop. My plan B was to play the SVR instead but since 3 Kansas teams are going to be in Houston it will be much more interesting to my audience.
One the same note, thanks to everyone who has helped make all of the regional webcast possible. This definitely includes Dr. Bot who has invaluable in working on these webcast. So here is my big thank you. I really appreciate all the work that goes into them.

Dr. Bot,
I am having trouble finding the link to Peachtree. Could you post it please?
BTW, thanks for chasing this down. We would be lost without your help.
The web pages ain't up yet, however the practice is being broadcast:

rtsp://vanseg-1.arc.nasa.gov/broadcast/ksc1/encoder/ga_first.rm
(First is realplayer link for east coast, 2nd for West coast)

I know this is a longshot but....
are there any archived videos of the BAE Granite state regional?
if there are, the videos would be of immense help. I wasn't able to watch many matches due to the fact I was in the pits most of the time I was there (and I'm on strategy team too... yikes)

It should be working now - We had to go to a low bit rate - the T1 is being shared with about 500 otther people - should be better on Saturday.

I'm having the same problem. (Video is delayed a minute or two behind the audio.) I'm guessing it's the low bitrate Dr. Bot mentioned.

Yeah Guys - I got the out of sync problem too, I was able to keep the video going for over an hour though. I've emailed the info to our field team. I am sorry to say it may not get any better. I don't know what the problem is - bandwidth is typically the culprit, but I haven't seen/heard out of sync video/audio on a real encoder-server for many years.
Jeff Seaton is emcee for Peachtree and won't be able to babysit the encoder, and I am off to Sacramento probably as a ref., so I won't be able to monitor the servers. (The funky thing is the encoders and servers say everything is just fine.)
We are going totally into autonomous mode for this webcast. Sorry if the quality is not what we've been able to do in the past. We do the best we can within a very limited people and budget for webcasting.

Dr. Bot,
Will the peachtree regional at least be archived since the stream is a tad foobar?

Just curious, I noticed it's using Windows Media Player... and it's not on the NASA site, so I'm guessing that this is being webcast by a different group? Either way... the webcast feed is efficient. Great job to the group up in UTC.

I just wanted to say big time kudos to all those responsible for putting on the webcasts this season. I remember when the when the first webcasts started...and I'll tell ya, you guys have made leaps and bounds since then. It seriously has grown to the point where it doesn't matter if they are broadcasted on TV anymore to me, the webcast is just that smooth. Thank you very much for your gracious work once again this year!
-Andy Grady
Your welcome Andy,
and you're right it isn't as easy as it looks. This year has been particularly challenging as there are more regionals and less(make that no) money for 'streaming' regionals. A great group of NASA volunteers and local talent (SOAP 108) makes it possible:
Here is a list - forgive my mispellings and omissions:
KSC - Mike Downs, Jim Doumolin and associates
MSFC - SAVIG - Bryan Walls, Satci Haddock
JSC - Mike Heidt
JPL - Caudia DeLuna
LaRC - Jeff Seaton and Jeff Evans
ARC - Seth Carter, Joe Hering, Ricky Guest, and Alan Federman
We had other volunteers who were willing to help, but we just couldn't get all the resources together to make it work in as many places as we wished.
Still we count Palmetto, CFLa, PNW, Midwest, VCU. SVR as successes, Lone Star as 50/50, and a miss on Peachtree.
The Nationals we are going to go 'full court press' we hope to STREAM ALL FOUR COURTS simultaneously.
