View Full Version : The weirdest thing w/ duct tape...

I want to know the weirdest thing you have seen/done with duck tape. As you all know, i think duck tape is the greatest invention on this earth. It is even better than the Segway :p. I have only seen the basics, wallets or clothes, but i want to know the weirdest use for Duck Tape!! I know there are stories out there, so I wanna hear them!!

P.S. All you people, please get voting on my Poll!! I wanna know what the majority of you all think!!!

P.P.S.S. If you are from the duck tape brand lawyer, and you are reading this, know i didn't do it. You caused it. Your fumes from the glue made me crazy!

i' ve seen really well made duct tape whips. the person that made them even went through the trouble of having the handle and the whip part evenly weighted for balance purposes. it was pretty neat, and quite painful too.

My second year on a FIRST team. One particularly irritating young member of the team (c'mon admit it - we all know a few of them!) pushed a few of the older student members one step too far.

Skip forward thirty minutes. Someone speaks up and says "has anyone seen Carl recently?"

We found him in the next room, Duct Taped to a structural support pillar eight feet off the floor, very calmly just waiting to be cut down. From then on he was a model team member, with an uncanny ability to discern when something might go "over the line."

Before you ask, I disavow all direct knowledge of how this incident took place or who was directly involved... ;)

I am not going to talk about duct tape clothing, I am not going to talk about duct tape clothing, I am...except to say I know the best thing to get duct tape residue off of skin, and it's not peanut butter.

The oddest? A friend in college let us duct tape his sort of longish hair into spikes for no reason whatsoever. Since Garret county still had some kind of a dry county law in affect, we headed over the boarder to West Virginia and went to some hick bar and scared the bejeezus out of the local bumpkins there.

Oh, trying to get the duct tape out of his hair was too painful, so he ended up with a very, very short haircut. Which made his parents very happy.

Well, Virginia Tech has an Engineering Olympics where one of the competitions is to Duck Tape up someone to the side of a wall and see who can get that person to get stuck up for the longest. Otherwise, the duck tape prom contest is the weirdest thing. Like I said once before, I have pictures.

i haven't seen this.. i've heard it.

one of my friends sings a song who's first verse is about duct tape and how it holds the world together. then there's stuff about zip ties, trantorques, etc.

I saw a thing that a couple got married wearing a duct tape suite (tie, shirt, jacket, slacks) and a duct tape dress (a small one, not a flowing one). I think someone should make a PR duct tape. You know, but your logo on it or something like that and watch it up on all sorts of things.

Hee hee duct tape + FIRST members = FUN!!!

Ok, odd duct tape uses? I could probably sit and list them for hours. (I didn't get my nickname for nothing! :D)

Well, one of our adults, another team member, and I were invited to a engineering dinner to show off our robot. By the time we finally got through the foodline, there weren't any open tables, so we were trying to eat off the cart, but our plates kept sliding. So we peeled some duct tape (placed there for unknown reasons) off the cart and used it to duct tape our plates to the cart so we could eat.

My fav. duct tape creation is my lovely duct tape purse. It's completely duct tape, not one of those cheesy ones, which is really an old purse underneath. I also made a duct tape duck. It's really cute, about the size of a softball. (I was bored!)

Anywho... everyone needs to get a 365 days of Duct Tape calander. They're the best!

I would hope for Asher's sake that she doubled over the duct tape. That would hurt and un-measurable amount...

I can't find the picture anywhere, but as some sort of fundraiser, my school allowed students to purchase 2' long pieces of duct tape (all the money went to a good cause). Well, these pieces were used to tape the academic dean up to a wall. He stood on a small crate while we started putting the tape on, then once satisfied, we took it out from under him. He stayed up about a foot off the ground. good times, good times.

Sorry Jeff. You're a true blonde.
And I did the duct tape bikini thing too... it was rather uncomfortable...
I also made duct tape wings..

On every flight of the Space Shuttle, the crew takes along a roll of duct tape (on some flights it is actually stored as a pile of one-meter strips of tape, on others it is a full roll). Over the years, it has been used for all sorts of things, ranging from replacing velcro to taping down food trays to making a big "fly swatter" to help repair an errant satellite.

But possibly the best use of the amazing grey tape was the "fender" made out of maps, paper clamps and duct tape by the Apollo 17 astronauts for the Lunar Rover. They needed something to keep the lunar dust (known as "regolith") from being kicked all over them as they drove across the surface of the Moon, after the original fender was damaged. You can see it here (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap011110.html).

I've got a good one. This year, one of our engineers found a big box of REALLY cheap soccer balls. (They were Smucker's SNACK PACK brand.) Well, one of them had a leak, suprising that there was only one.

Anyway, long story short, we cut out the bladder from the ball, and about an hour's worth of duct taping later :D , we have our very own bladderball. It only holds air for about half an hour, but that's half an hour of bizzare fun.

The leak was really about a 6-inch long slash in the bladder, so it took several layers of tape to get it even this good. It is currently in our crate awaiting our arrival in Seattle.

hm.. i guess i'll have to join in on the fun out there.. and bring my friend that sings the duct tape song (- http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2697 -) to drive you all insane whilst you play with said "bladderball".. not to mention the fact that half of everyone there will prolly want to join in on the fun. :)

what better way to drive university students insane than having a girl sing a very annoying song (funny to me though) and having high school kids goofing off on university turf? :D

That duct tape purse sounds kinda cool... i just might do that...
Oh, there's a chick at my school that has a shirt with a strip of duct tape across with "your ad here" in permenant marker written on it.

okay, were you at the toronto regional? because i swear that i heard someone tell me that exact same story there. it kinda freaks me out, in fact it would freak me out more if you hadn't been there....scary stuff, scary stuff...

anyways...i think that with all of you guys put together, you could have beem millionaires with all the money that you've spent on duct tape, like i can talk tho. im just as bad....its sad really that so many people can find such amusment with such a simple object like duct tape...

p.s. if your every stranded in the woods (or on a survival trip like i was) all you need are a few logs and a couple rolls of duct tape and you've got a perfect little lean-to to sleep in!

p.s.s it helps to have other insulation because in the middle of the night, duct tape doesn't insulate very well. and that, might, eventually, lead to duct tapes downfall! how depressing! if only it could insulate better, all those people in duct tape clothes could go out in the winter!

i made my wallet out of duct tape. its REALLY great. i have two card holder pockets, a see through pocket for my id, and two money compartments. its really shiny tape, and it has nylon strands in it to make it super durable. its like a tank. and the coolest thing is that when i am in a airport, it makes the metal detectors go of so i have to take it out. when i do everyone looks and stares. its rectangular and shiny, they are all so surprised. i like it very much.

On one of the many late nights during the build period, one of our members took it upon himself to make new shoes out of cardboard and duct tape.

It was fun for a few minutes, but the real hilarity occured outside.

It was approximately 2am, and had been raining the day before. As we were on the way to our various modes of transportation, we came to the end of a walkway, infamous for having a huge dip at the end, in which a seriously deep puddle forms after rain. We were all talking and joking (as well as anyone can after a 14 hour day), when all of a sudden, Bill says, "Watch out for that puddle..."

*splash!*

The dude with the duct tape shoes stepped right in the middle, the deepest part, of the miniture lake...

At that point, we were all in hysterics. It was the funniest thing that had happened all day, and I don't think I'll ever forget about it...

As for duct tape...Think 1 large novelty sombrero, 8 rolls of duct tape, and 8 robotics members in a hotel room with more caffiene than is legal to posses in some small nations.

well, my brother knows that I am a fan of making things out of duct tape (wallets, purses, flip-flops, yadda yadda yadda). So when one of his female friends invited him to prom and asked him if he would be willing to do the Duck Tape prom contest with her, guess who he asked to help him make his outfit? Yup! Me! But the great thing about it is that, seeing as my brother is a comedian to major proportions, he's not wearing a tux. Instead, both he and the girl are going in dresses. Hee hee. (Scary thing is, he looks good in dresses, 'cuz he has had to wear them before for plays and the such). I can't wait have him in the final outfit. :D
