This is true. The UTC regional is very renowned. Many national winners go to this regional such as Rage team 173 and Aces High team 176. On the other side of the competition, the awards, there are teams like Buzz team 175 who won the 2002 National Chairman’s award. For this year there is team 237 who won the 2004 NJ regional and Aces high who won the 2004 BAE regional. Get ready for some competition! Good Luck! :)
team 121 will see you there.. tomorrow
Good Luck everyone, it should be fun

I hope to see the sleeping giants and the fresh blood rise up from their past positions. Anything can happen in FIRST. It all comes down to the next three days and how you spend them.

UTC has also set up an internet station at the venue so you are able to hook up laptops.
Any possibility of hooking up a webcam to that internet station to broadcast from? Not a "real time webcam", but more like a 5-10 second delay webcam.
Maybe we can work something out today (Thursday) and set it up for Friday and Saturday?
PLease talk to me tomorrow at Team 237's pit Jon if this is possible, as my team would more than likely be interested in providing this service.

Who Isn't going to be?
... I fully believe that if on Sunday I have any voice left, then we weren't cheering loud enough, hard enough, or long enough. ;).

YAAYYY.... Wireless internet at the venue!!!!! we will be updating pictures to our picture site every hour... check www.pbase.com/sscamatt/robotics for updates. It will be under the UTC 2004 gallery.
To everyone at UTC or knows annything about what happened to day I was wondering if Gael Force Team 126 hung at all today in practice. since I couldn't be there today. But I will be there the next two days.
Thanx,

Today was an interesting day. There are alot of interesting robots this year. During one match against Gael Force, we manovered our shimmy to block them. Gael Force then raised its hanging maechinisum and grabed on to our new attachment called wings. It was finally ruled that Gael Force was legally hanging on the bar, since their hook was above the horizonal bar.

Compared to the NJ regional...ALOT more cappers and alot less hanging...atleast thats what I saw in the practice rounds.
jjdebner
18-03-2004, 20:40
compared to new jersey...
more 31337 teams and alot more compettion...
you can tell people have experience under their belts...
if you look in the pit area everyone has complex set-ups and most people are more worried about getting autonomous working than getting their robot working because most peoples robot is working unlike NJ. I can't wait to see the intenseness of this match.... ball cappers definatly seem to be a BIG deal and there is alot of robots that can "multi task" well see if hanging is as important is it was in NJ now that we have ball cappers little ball collectors the score will be brought to a new level
Tom Bottiglieri
18-03-2004, 21:31
A few things i noticed today...
No one effectively caught the ball drop
There were alot of cappers, but only a few were working correctly
Of those that hang, they seem to have a very good chance at winning *237,716 wink wink nudge nudge*
Everyone was dead in the stands
The meadows is still a horrible place to wacth a robotics competetion
There are many more cappers but many more efficent hangers. There is a promise of even more compition, at least with 237 and 716 and other primary hangers.. There is another SHIMMY BOT. Team 546 can climb and shimmy fast, but have a tendancy to tip. Good luck to them.
UTC teams tend to have a lot of expirence anyway, which is always great compition. As far as the venue goes, the Meadows rocks me, not to mention the wonderful staging, the working field, and the promsie of accurate rankings, the cheaper food.. I feel spoiled. ^.^
Good luck! Remember, if you need any help, mercilessly berate 237 ill we help you! We will!

UTC was great.......
The cue-ing(sp?) and whole crew was great, and for those that don't know, we started 20 minutes behind....ended up 20 minutes ahead, and everyone got an extra practice round, if they stayed. Everyone was really nice too.
COmpetition looks really good, should be a good challenge, as UTC always is!!
RAGE will help, just ask!
Jeff Rodriguez
18-03-2004, 21:46
FIRST ran early!!!!!!
We started about 20 minutes late, and then fell back another 20 minutes. We then kicked it up a notch, and by the end of the practice rounds we were 15 minutes ahead of schedule. That's right, ahead of schedule. Since the CT regional is awesome, we added an extra practice round for the teams who wanted one!
Thanks to the teams for listening to everybody and working together. Thanks to the field resetters for being so lightning quick. Thanks to all the staff for keeping things running perfectly smooth, and addressing any problems immediatly.
FYI: At one point it was taking us (the feild crew) a minute and a half from the end of one match to the start of the next. That includes unloading and loading bots, resetting the field and getting everything working.
AMAZING JOB EVERYONE!!

honestly, not to degrade anybody,
I was never a huge fan of utc since it was moved to New Haven in '02. in '01 i think the setup was really cramed to say the least. i think BAE has been the most veiwer and team friendly venue, the way that the seating never has a bad view and the pits flow....UTC at the Meadows, is very hard to get a good seat, and to do work in the pits... so i wouldnt say UTC was good except for the teams that attend and thats it.

I have to agree.. That is exactly the reason my team isn't there this year.
however, if anyone from the teams we played against in NH are reading this, GOOD LUCK!
UTC should be fun and I'm disappointed I can't go. Hope you guys kick @$$ and take names!

What a wonderfull day, our robot is 100% fuctional with a 95% functional great autonomus mode and a 100% function ok autonomous mode, we actually attended all of our practice matches and 2 or 3 extra. Our aliance partners were all wonderfull and i just cant wait for qualifying matches toamrow, The only downafall of the day was that we blew out 1 atwood motor but we swtiched it out at the end of the day ! so super fun, happy time to all of you and cant wait to see you all tomarow !! Good Luck, and stop by 521's PIT for some of the cool pens ...

Did you miss the Bob cats? They caught the balls everytime dropping from the ball chute. Its not just a giant ball cather, of course it misses some, but it still caught alot of them. One question to you guys. Why did it keep getting stuck?

Bobcats came and stole our balldrop...thats right...OUR ball drop...great strategy...but do they have the power to avoid other bos pushing them out of the way and missing the drop? (dun dun dun)
Home at last home at last thank you I am home at last!!!! But luckily I'll be back at UTC in less then 10 hours. Any ways it was great day with some splendid competition, as John (Xufer) said we are fine and up and running with that brand spankin' (Wink-wink inside joke) new Atwood motor, and in the last 3-4 matches we really seemed to be able to get our startegy and game plan screwed down tight both pre, and post game, as wells as on and off the field. OH, and yes the pens/keychains are ihgty spify it I might say so myself and yeah at least it goes to proobve that HP is good for something beisdes being TOO strong (nudge-nudge)

Yea our hp is too "strong" to get balls in the goal thats right infront of him thats his problem, if anyone wants to hit our hp tomarrow please feel free you have MY permission, and im uhh the permission giving guy thing ! so hit away, untill he makes 100% of his shotsinstead of 90% haha !! although our handshake accuracy is improving to a good 97% !

Great day of rounds everyone!
We (refs) had easy jobs. The teams seem to really know and understand the rules, and are careful of them.
Some highlights from my perseptive:
173 & 175 vs. 157 & 155
Man that was a great round. I believe it was also the first time a 10pt ball was shot by the human player (unfortunatly it missed, thanks Jon K. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/member.php?u=1919)) It played out how alot of finals matches have, with robots collecting balls at the beginning and jockeying for position, then going for the hang at the end. Great all around match.
230 & 173 hanging with a ball stuck between them suspended by the robots. It was a great photo op, and I'm sure the picture will get here soon.
That's all I can think of now. It's just coincidence that they both involve 173.
Don't miss the finals tomarrow. I get the feeling the national winner will be in the the UTC finals!

Teams really need to scout better. Instead of picking their friends they should pay attention to who is being picked. Multiple times there were non-existant teams being picked. Teams are picking alliance captains that are higher than them. Also some teams were VERY rude in declining with VERY rude comments. Teams had no clue who to pick and were just picking numbers out of the air.
Teams that are in the bottom 5 are being picked over teams that are top 10...this just doesnt make sense to me.

well i dont know your teams robot or how it performed very well, but judging from the placing it looked like it performed admirably.
however, the tone of your post seems slightly embittered at all the top 8 teams and their partners. just because they didnt pick your team doesnt mean they forgot about you, or did not care about you. one cant just say oh i didnt get picked so im going to believe and take it upon myself that all the other teams are responsible. every single team in FIRST has to deal with this kind of situation. In pittsburgh, 188 ran into bad luck or bad strategy all weekend and finished seeded somewhere 23rd out of 37 teams, and we still got picked over some higher placed teams. this wasnt their's, ours or anyone elses fault. this is they the FIRST pans out. nothing is fair, and hopefully this wont affect the team's mindset for the future.
Don't you love how teams are like:
"Pick us you guys are awesome we would definately pick you"
"WOW.. You guys should pick us"
"You guys are definatly in the top eight"
Then all of a sudden you loose one match and go from 5th to 11th and people convienietly forget about you... or refuse to pick you..
All of a sudden the comments are
"wow... we forgot you didn't get picked
"i am so surprised"
"we woulda picked you but we forgot about you"
"woops"
"that suxs for you"
(34th ranked teams were picked over 11th place teams who had been in the top eight from the first match until the very last and only lost because of the alliences fail to contribute to match)

I know you're pretty heartbroken right now but hopefully you can learn from this and be stronger for it. Do you have any other competitions comming up?
Sadly that was our last competition. But i have found out what happened, and i think it is a slight flaw with FIRST. We were seated in the top 8 all during Qualification matches. The problem was, our last match (the 2nd to last one) was lost due to the other team not hanging. The score was 100 to 115. This shot us down to posistion # 12. The only problem was every team already had made the decision on who they would choose, still thinking we were in the top eight. This was very frustrating for our team after doing very well in NJ finishing 3rd, and being in the 1, 2 or 3 seeded spot, and not getting picked. Has what happened to us ever happened to any other teams? What do you think about what happend?

WOW 200 points!!!!!!!! by team 126,773,1100
ya actually that could have been 210 had there not been a ten point penalty on our alliance. i'm not sure who it was on or what for but there was a ten point penalty in that match.
To 195:
I've been on three different teams and for some reason I've always ended up doing the politics. Quite frankly, I hate it. The only thing worse than going up to a team that you like and respect and begging to get picked is not picking a team that you do like and respect. The whole thing can get ugly and personal. Unfortunately there's a juxtaposition in FIRST between "gracious professionalism" and winning. Usually its an easy decision, and FIRST does a great job rewarding and encouraging teams to be gracious professionals, but sometimes there is pressure to win. ESPECIALLY during the pre-finals politics a lot of teams do some pretty humiliating things, lie, betray friends, you know what I'm talking about. Its not fair, but when it comes time to jostle into position for the finals the goal becomes winning - there's no incentive for it not to be - and people start to "play strategically." My point is that the people in charge of politics aren't bad people, they just seem to have a different goal than everyone else - to win and thats because of how the competition is set up. It hurts to have to pack up at 1:00, but you just have to learn and move on. Hey, at least you guys get to play at more than one regional! I'm hardly a model of a zen FIRST guru, I was fuming at another team this morning and I regret it, but the more I do FIRST the more I realize that you can't be cynical about it, you have to buy into the FIRST mission and concentrate on the important stuff and that isn't winning and it isn't other teams. At least thats the way to avoid an ulcer.
For what its worth, you guys epitomized gracious professionalism and you fought incredibly hard. That last match against 181 and 782 was really exciting.

Please do NOT make excuses for why you did not get picked. The regional is over and what happened did happen and you cant change it now. Our team droped from rank 3 to 12 due to loosing our 2nd to last match. We still worked as hard as we could to get to rank 9 and during selections move to the 8th seed spot. This should be a learning experience as to what to do now, and complaining on here will give a bad rep for your team. Also not many teams have selected who they would pick over an hour from selections. I know that many teams thoughts change during the last few matches.
PS~ Be happy for the AWARD that your team WON!

We were VERY happy with the award we won. And just as a clarification, it is not an excuse. It is was truly happened, and many other teams agree. I dont want to start an argument, this is just a clarification to you point. And another thing, you lost your second to last match, but then won one, so you moved back up closer. Not being rude but you probobly would have been in the same posistion as we were if you had not been moved to a picking spot. (assuming from many past experiences.) Many teams did not understand what happened to us, until they realized our predicament

Thanks soooo much! I just downloaded the Male Stripper video, and it's got the guy from my team rubbing his nipples. :yikes: I haven't seen my team's video of the hypnosis yet.
Anyone have webcast feedback? We finally got the ducks lined up (partly) to get this webcasted and just want to improve it for the future. Any feedback would be a great help. Just send me a Private Message here on C.D.
Thanks

230 & 173 hanging with a ball stuck between them suspended by the robots. It was a great photo op, and I'm sure the picture will get here soon.
The engineers on 230 would really like to get a copy of the picture of us hanging with 173. They would like to put it as the background on their computers. If you have a picture of it please post it on delphi. We would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Our head advisor might. He was taping portions of the competition (you may have seen the tripod set up in the stands behind the pretzel booth) and I do know he taped the quater final match we (237) were in. I'm not sure about the others but I can find out.

does anyone have videos of the quaterfinal matches?
I have like 1 or 2 captured from the webcast...I'll post them on the video page: www.team195.com/video/video.html
Elgin sorry I never found you, I haven't been on CD til today from when I posted that. And to Ogre, not my fault that ball was down in and the pole was just moving to much and it dropped out. That match also had the high score for Qualifying with 190 and then the high score for the regional was 200 set during elims.

I originally wanted to watch the PeachTree Regional, but there was some problems with the webcast. So I frantically searched for another webcast perhaps for another regional, and I found UTC! Kudos to whoever set it up. There was probably a two or three second delay in audio, but at least it is something. The video feed is pretty good, sometimes the color tinting would change from blue to green, but it was bearable. Also, when I maximized the webcast to fit the entire screen of my monitor, there was some pixelation, but not as horrific as it often gets with Real Player Webcasts (I believe from NASA). Again, good job to whoever set it up!
As for what I saw at this regional, there were a lot of ball handling robots! Many of which were able to hang, which kind of surprised me. At UCF, the majority of robots were bar-hanging. This regional helped us learn much, since we have not had any matches (yet) with awesome ball handling robots. I also have to comment on the high scores. This regional probably had the highest average qualifying scores yet. It will be interesting to see what type of robots will dominate the competition at Nationals for this year. I hope to see some of you guys in Atlanta!
yeah, finally having a few ball robots does change the equation a bit. scores in the finals were routinely over 150.
I'd Like to request a video of match 3.1 of the Quaterfinals. I'd appreciate it if anyone could post a link to it. It was a great match, our alliance lost 165 -150, it was a really close one. If we didn't get a 10 point penalty we would have only lost by one ball.

team 521 was in that match and i have to say there was alot of suspense building on that bar, and our aliance partners and us worked well together to pull in for the win, i have to say that was one of our most exciting matches.

yea your right im spacing out here i had just watched em heh, you guys helped us soo much with that match though we cant thank you enough for beating us! i know it sounds bad but it put our strategy into perspective soo quickly its really amazing. I hope to see you all at nationals.

For more about this match, if anybody is curious, you can also look into the thread entitled " Thanks to all teams at UTC" about what an amazing match it was and how there could have been another intense match between the two excellent alliances had things gone differently. But it was an amazing match overall and by no means am I bitter at the refs call, they just called it as they saw it which is how it should be.
Thanks for posting the picture of us and 173 the engineers will be happy. That match was definitely intense. Definitely one of the better matches at the competition.

Thanks for the kind words. The UTC webcast was set up by Team 230 with a lot of help from UTC & FIRST. Unfortunately we were only able to get in Wednesday before the event so we didn't have a lot of time to get the word out. If all goes well we will do it again next year. We will surely post info on www.shsrobotics.org.
