up we are getting ready for san jose, after major brainstorming over the current state of our robot we are going to have a major upgrade on our robot at San jose and going to build a winch from scratch on thursday.

we will be, but with a few modifications, making our hanging arm a bit longer. and improving our ball bumper.

I'm glad to hear you guys are going to hang at SVR, Akshay.

258 will be competing at SVR, but we'll be mad scrambling on Thursday to add potentiometers to our arm and make sure our electronics / programming is in the shape we want it. We're looking forward to seeing ChiefDelphi out here in California, and we hope that all the teams from out of the area have a great time here. See you all in a little over a week!

Hehehe...thanks! As a team member of Chief Delphi...we're happy to be getting the chance to come out there to California. We are looking forward to meeting most of the West Coast teams there in San Jose! Also, we are excited about this event as long as Nationals! See everyone in a week!!!!! :D

I agree with the first two entries. This is a FIRST timer that we, Chief Delphi, is actually going to the West coast instead of staying in the Mid West. I hope to see all the teams that are going to be there. That means, more friends and new faces. :)

For those of you who are going to San Jose and are you ready for it?

Silicon Valley Regional is going to be very exciting this year! There will be at least 2 regional winners, team 47 and team 254, and one of the Sacramento regional finalist, team 1120, at this completition, plus many othe teams that did very well at Sacramento Regional, Portland Regional, Arizona Regional, and winners from previous year's California Robot Game, team 258, 852.

Personally, its going to be great seeing the WRRF teams competing again. Teams from out of state may not know about WRRF, but Western Region Robotics Forum has been an organization of teams in the Bay Area who got together a few years ago and decided that as a group, we can better support Robotics education related programs out here. There are lots of great people to meet , you simply have to go around the pit area and talk to them.

Oh yeah, by the way, I will be there at the scoring table stressing out as usual :P. It will be fun score keeping at the oldest West Coast regional since it got started in 1999. I simply cannot believe 5 years ago I was only of the clueless kids standing with the team cheering for our robot.

Its definitely going to be cool!

*edit* Also, for those of you who are interested, I put together a package for the competing teams with a bunch of info for the area around the regional venue. Check them out at these links:

Part 1: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/papers.php?s=&action=single&paperid=265

Part 2: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/papers.php?s=&action=single&paperid=266

You just can't be too prepared for a FIRST competition ;-).

I have been trying to put some stuff together for this Reginal. As some of the students said we have never been out to the West Cost yet, we usualy stay in the Mid-West or East Cost area. I am a little nervous going to CA
"blindfolded" :ahh: . I look forward to seeing great things and great teams next weekend.

Don't worry, when I came here from Hong Kong 9 years ago, I thought there was going to be orange trees and beaches everywhere, blinding sun shine day and night, Hippies all over the place trying to convert you into one of them, and everyone surf and call each other dudes. Oh, and I also thought everyone was a vegetarian and a part of Green peace. Well, turns out most of that were true.

But I survived. And if I can do it, so can you ;-).

You will see that the west coast have a different pace than most Midwest, Michigan, and east coast regionals. But I must say I’ve always like west coast competition the best, even after visiting IRI. Statistically, there are fewer engineers on teams here, more high school teacher as mentors, and more student run teams. But we are slowly convincing that successful programs need a close relationship between high school students and mentors, so student ran teams have more and more mentors helping them now.

Don’t be afraid to go around meeting people. There are a lot of great mentors and FIRST-a-holic at SVR who aren’t active on the Chief Delphi Forum. Its mostly because we communicate through the WRRF mailing list and meetings.

True, time is of the essence. To answer the previous post, there are 10 students going down. For us, thats pretty big. This was the biggest year so far, i think. Robotics up here isnt the greatest and there is a major lack of resources and such. Also traveling with us are 2 or 3 parents, a teacher, and a school advisor.

The Marriot is about 3-4 blocks from the SJSU campus, and NASA Ames Research Center is approx. 20-30 minutes away from SJSU by freeway. There are lots of locals who could act as chauffers, myself included, if people wanted to get together. I'm going to look into hosting some sort of party at 258's high school (about a 10 minute drive on surface streets from SJSU) on either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. I'll check the availability of the gym (where we've hosted roller hockey and pizza parties in the past) sometime today or tomorrow.

We're not too far away--just a hop, skip and a slog through rush hour traffic from Sacramento. :p We normally drive down the day before..early in order to avoid the traffic. Go to school for two periods, leave around lunch, make it to our hotel and relax, normally with a DDR tournament or Halo party. I love hotels. :D

Cant wait to meet all the teams down there. Speaking of being ready...AH! We still have the programming to work out, and possibly a dead reckoning system. Man, the pressure is on. On top of that, we need to pack our tools and such, and also finish building our OI. With the first one, we tried to drill another slot for a switch but the whole lexan sheet cracked everywhere. But whats a little fun without a headache, eh?

Also, does anyone from the area know of any fun places or things to do around the NASA area thats within possible walking distance?

Cory
25-03-2004, 02:37
There isn't really much around Ames that I recall... You've got to go into San Jose/Mountain View to do stuff. Im sure there will be plently of people heading out to random food courts/restaurants/etc to hang out after competition each day. If you can get back to Moffett awhile after the competition ends, there will be plenty to do with other teams.

Montana's only team, #473, is ready and rarin to go!
No goat cheese this year since food handouts have been nixed.
Maybe we'll bring containers for bolt storage.

We're staying in Santa Cruz to maximize our beach (and boardwalk) time since FIRST doesn't want us working in all-night metal shops even if they are open to all teams. Oh well. We plan to hook up a skimboard with 2 runners for carving and rooster-tailing in the surf! Ya'll are always welcome to come join us there for a look at old surfer's paradise! There's a surfboard museum at the point, and its the closet decent swim you'll find in the Pacific.

We're also considering attempting a hand rebuilt on Thursday so we can use big blue irrigation work gloves to match the new cowboy hat we're bringing for our robot "Dixie". We hope to be even more serious competitors than we were in Portland (where only a couple bad breaks kept us from stardom).

Excited to see you all next week! J# et al

The problem is is that we don't have enough money. We're trying to get some but we'll probably have only enough for the drivers, human players, and the pit crew(about 8 people). We won't have the team to cheer them on. We might not even go at all to save the money for next year. I really want to go though and so does the rest of the team. Wish us luck!

Bummer to hear that. For us, we all to pay our own way.

To team delphi, we're arriving there early in the morning. Do you guys still wanna do something together on wednesday sometime?

Good luck to everyone going.

Well, from my student stand point, I have no clue... You'll have to talk to our coaches about that....
