We are in process of setting up the webcast in conjunction with our friends at NASA. Please stay tuned for details. Remember, today is a "practice day" for us too. We will also make it a to-do to have live scoring on soap108.com.

Are there any other Regionals being webcast?

Thanks SOAP for providing this service!

All-
2 Motorolans + 1 NASA Engineer + 300 Nextel cell minutes (and still had a healthy battery into the night) + 9 hours 45 minutes of troubleshooting the router, desktop, video cables, operating system services, windows media server settings, real producer settings, encoding hardware, QoS, NASA-KSC network, NASA-Ames network, and different helix servers across the country = The 2004 Motorola Midwest Regional WEBCAST!!

Please appreciate the level of commitment we have for this project. Also, take this as a lesson in never giving up. There is always a solution to a problem...somtimes it takes a long time to find it.

This site should have a link soon: http://robotics.nasa.gov/first/2004/regionals.htm

If not, go here directly:
http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/video/first/chicago.ram
(You will need Real Player)

Also, scores will be posted LiVE at http://www.soap108.com/2004/events/il

ENJOY!!!

Sweet. Thanks. Also the archive will look great too with a crisp 640x480 capture! We'll start to post the movies during lunch (cant consume too much bandwidth with the stream, of matches, going...).

Thank NASA too!!

Dan Greene from Wildstang.
He's been awesome.

"Watch out for those sigmacats, they're no technokittens... they look tough!"
"They're like squidward from spongebob"

He's just great.

As far as the regional goes, we've been watching... too early to tell, but there is a lot of AMAZING potential, and some seriously awesome robots.

Thanks again SOAP and NASA.

All I am getting now at 7:20 EST is the newest in a series of tapes, "Sounds from a sleepy competition."
The test pattern is up, but every once in a while, you can hear people talking inaudibly, or laughing.

Nice.. I think I will leave this on all night and fall asleep to the sounds.

If anyone is there right now, and is reading this. Say something in the mic!!!!

If you like to refresh your browser every 5 minutes then FIRST is the way to go. You'll find more details about the seeding on the SOAP site. This gives a much better understanding why a team is ranked where they are.
http://www.soap108.com/2004/events/il/seeding.cfm

Also, the seeding scroller in one window + webcast in the other = one really nice LiVE experience...so says quite a few people watching at home (see previous posts about IRI 2003).

I just arrived in chicago today to visit famliy and realized that the competition was going on! My team, 954, is going to the San Jose Regional next weekend. I was just wondering if anyone could let me know exactly where the regional is at Northwestern? We're staying very close to it, at the Hilton.

Thanks, David

Ahh. The scrolling thing is really nice! How does this SOAP thing work? Where is the information comming from? Is it a bunch of dedicated people sitting in at the events and getting the information as the match results are shown? How often is it updated? Is it faster than the FIRST site?

Well, to make a long story long....

Well, over the years it has changed. It used to be we typed in manually, but sometimes had an incorrect match detail or had the red and blue alliances' team #'s swapped. We made sure to mark the matches as "super-unofficial".

In 2002-2003 some events we were able to have the FIRST db automatically push results into the SOAP db. That was 100% accuracy, even if they had to re-score a match.

This year we're back to manual, but the events 108 attends I dedicate myself to make sure all results are dead-on accurate. In fact, in Florida there were instances where I had to call FIRST to note an issue with their calculations. One turned out to be a false alarm, the other something they needed to correct. Having the SOAP as backup, in the words of one FIRST Staffer, is 'soooo reassuring that we will have an accurate event. I feel safer with you guys here.'

With the FIRST "ambitious overhaul" of the scoring in 2004, any SOAP push was dead last on their to-do list. It's unfortunate because our output (the web pages) has been tested rigorously the last 4 years because we have had so much re-use. The 1st three weeks of regionals could have been "posted" instantly instead of in week 4. Part of the problem is FIRST FTP's a data file after every match. This is inefficient. Our web page is dynamic depending on the data in the database. A simple refresh always shows the latest data. The bad side is right now we removed/archived our 2003 data so our 2003 web pages sort of don't exist. (Correctable though)

There's more to say, but the event is about to start...

I click on the link in CD and it gives me a 404 error, same with pasting the link into real player. not only that, i cant even access http://robotics.nasa.gov, http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/robotics or the chicago.ram file.. its weird cause i noticed this on friday or thursday and just thought that it was a glitch for practice day. :(

Yep, here too: http://www.soap108.com/2004/events/il/elim.cfm

Note we wont have elimination details or results LiVE. Sorry.
If someone reading this can track, that would be greatly appreciated!!!

Also, if you are attending a regional next week, pls PM soap108. We want to send you the FileMaker GUI we use to track the match details. If you can capture that data at your regional, then email us the file..........Or if you are at Nationals (who isn't) that could be very helpful to us also!
