Let's do this thing.
Since there is no contest on who wins what at the regionals this year (I forgot what it was called but it was fun) let's try something different.

Here's how it works...

3-team alliance of three random bots picked from the championship pool of teams.

Whatever points your team gets in a match is what you score. No matter who their partner is or if they are in the final tourney.
Score is determined first by W-L record then average point score (I’m not into that loser score average stuff). I’m talking horsepower here. If your robot is an offensive stud then you should be rewarded!
Winner gets braggin' rights. So who's in?

Jones571

im in!!!! are we going to do this right? "draft" teams no one can have the same person like a fantasy football after we get all the names? something like that would be cool

How will we do the "draft" of championship teams? Like, who gets to pick first?
I vote, by reputation points. ;)

We've been preparing for this for years...
My CheesyWildTechnoBeasts will prove triumphant over all. ;)

y didnt we do the ventures thing this year? and id se screwed if we went by rep points (5) lol i belive "random" rumber generator would be good for this.

Can't do the draft til they finish making the list then I'm going to randomize a list of whomever is in and the get to draft first to last then last to first then first to last. If there are 300 teams then 100 people can play. So far with 281 teams 93 peopel can play.

No. Your three teams are your teams. I meant randomized draft order. If you get the first pick then you will get the last pick in the second round but you will get the first pick of third round.

I'm interested. Let's do it.

<Edit>
Depending on how many people are doing this it may not be possible to have 3 unique picks per person. I could be wrong though since I'm still a bit fuzzy on how this will be run.

how about winner gets a team shirt from every person who entered (which would mean you could live for months without ever having to wash your t-shirts)... this could work by making the "cost" to entering the game a team shirt? of course a team shirt isnt mandatory in entering the game... only suggested (for people who dont have shirts to give up)

what do yall think?

Draft will be immediately after they post the divisions. The draft willbe held on Chiefdelphi in a new thread. You will be assigned a number for your draft position. You keep that number. For each round the number is reversed from front to back and back to front. When your turn comes up you will pick one team by posting your choice on the board. You will get thirty minutes on the clock, if I am online . I will have each person PM me a list of the top 25 teams they want per round in case they dissappear (I'm not online as much as I used to be). I may have an assistant or two to help out (Jones 571 is definatly one).

One way to make the draft run smoother is to let people pick early. By that, I mean if there are 3 people before you that haven't picked yet, give your top 4 picks, and you are guaranteed that one of them will be availible.

How will we do the "draft" of championship teams? Like, who gets to pick first?
I vote, by reputation points. ;)

I think a semi-randomized ordering processes with a "seed" of reputation points would be more interesting then just completely random.

I envision it like the order selection of the NBA draft. The team with the worst record doesn't automatically get the #1 draft position, rather they get the best chance of being the #1 draft position. You can see the odds for last year here: http://nbadraft.net/2003lottery.htm

What I would suggest is that you get 1 entry for each reputation dot that you have. Thus, Ed would get 6 entries, JVN would get 11, and Jones 571 would get 1. However, any one of them could still get the #1 draft position, just John would have the best chance, and Jones would have the worst chance.

Any thoughts?

Also, any possibilty of having points for other awards, specifically chairman's?

Team311
04-04-2004, 12:33
we should do the draft order like they do on Yahoo fantasy baseball. people are chosen randomly for the spots so everyone has the same chance as everyone else at having the first pick.

Jeff Rodriguez
04-04-2004, 12:34
Obviously, people like me(with low rep points) are against that.
I say random.

Can we make trades? If so, can they be uneven trades? (I'll trade my 67 for your 1126 and 1405)

What is the exact ranking criterion, most wins, least losses, Qualifying points, average qualifying points? What's the tiebreaker?
You can make trades but not unbalanced ones. I want to fill this league to the limit and there may be no other robots to choose from. It's either straight up one for one, two for two or the whole alliance for another. All trades have to go through me for approval and no trading after April 14th (on account of I'm going to be on a plane for Atlanta the next day and I have to go straight from work to the airport to catch my flight)

You get two wins. I go with the teams individual won/loss record and the points. When a team is in the elimination rounds your team gets the win and loss for the allince whether the team is on the field or not (strictly a laziness thing).

If you want to get a basic idea of how the draft will be handled this (http://209.123.85.43/showthread.php?t=202177&page=1&pp=30) is sort of how it will be done.

Ed is just getting everyone ready for what will happen next week.

Hmmm... is it a conflict of interest if I end up coaching against one of my fantasy draft picks? Hmm... should I pick 229? (nah. ;))
Should I help out my fantasy picks? Some strategy advice for my #3 pick?

So many interesting questions.
This will be fun.

Ed... any thoughts about splitting this into a few different groups?
I think this game would be more fun with LESS people picking. That way, there is more chance of getting the "dark horse" #3 pick.

Maybe we could have 4 FIRST Fantasy leagues, A-D?

I don't see a problem with picking your own robot.
I want to try with a 90 to 100 person league this year and we'll see about divsions next year (I'm flying by the seat of my pants. My best bet for survival is to keep everything in front of me in one spot).

I say we pretty much have to go with a pre-ordered draft. I don't think we could get 90 people to be all in the same place at the same time. My suggestion is that everyone set up in order all the teams they want to draft after the divisions are announced and either e-mails or pm's them to the people that are running the draft so that no one else sees your list.

I'm going to have everyone PM me their top 50 choices per round, just in case they are not around. I'm also going to have an assistant or two to take up the slack when I'm at work (no more surfing at work. No computer) or school.
During build season it's not too hard to find people on these pages though.

Fantasy FIRST has grown fast in less then 24hours we have had 69 people say they want to play! it is great

Koko Ed
04-04-2004, 16:13
the problem with going with points is you get a big advantage if your team gets into the elimination rounds and it's not always the best seeded teams that always get in. In our division last year Children of the Swamp seeded 17 and did not get picked. You penalize allinces (whomever your three teams are) because they did not meet the preferance of seeded teams. There are teams that would get picked no matter what (like 71 Beaty robotics. They'd get picked if they sent a pile of parts out to the field).
At least with wins and losses (with an emphasis on w/l percentage) it's a little more fair. BTW the John V Neun example in the sample is an extream example. I doubt anyone is going to do that well.

Everyone who participates would have to give them CD rep

They would get to have a "FANTASY FIRST Champion" logo for their avatar, or a sticker on their bot

They would get to pick the teams they want in the next years (so they can get 254 every year :) )

You pick three robots from the list of teams at the championship in a draft. After the draft you can trade with other members in the league.
You get the win and losses pf each of your robots in a match and the points they accumulate (none of that loser score nonsense). Top won/loss record plus total points (for a tiebreaker) wins.

Here you'll learn all about me: my interests and hobbies, the people in my family, my pets, and more. I've even included a list of my favorite links to other sites.

On this home page, I'll introduce myself and talk about my reasons for wanting a web site. I might put a picture of myself on this page...or just a picture that I especially like.

--Wow...I didn't know fantasy first was so personal. :D

It would be interesting if next year if we broke this down even more. Kinda to incorporate every aspect of FIRST.

Like Include winning awards along with the competition aspect.

Wins losses and ties Sure.

But Getting a team that might win a lot of awards and not a lot games should count for something also.

It'd be like Fantasy baseball, you'd want a bit of both worlds.. pitching and hitting.

JVN's Top Picks!
(and guide for Fantasy FIRST picking)

Okay... so I've been asked to play the role of the professional sports analyst, and post some of my "Top Picks" for the fantasy FIRST league. Since I'm participating in this little game, I'm not going to go so far as to post my list, but I will share some insight into how I'm making my list.

Basically, the first thing to consider is... "What criteria is this being judged on?"
The answer: "Wins and losses" then "Overall points".
So when we all go to make our draft picks, we will want the "best" teams. This doesn't mean "the teams that will win nationals" this means, "the teams that will win the most matches". So based on this, it is important to snag the teams we feel are going to win most.

So how do we go about picking which teams will do best?

Well... this is how I'm doing it:
I'm going to pick (in this order):

1. The kick-butts- Those teams that I have seen (or heard of) kicking butt this season. That is, the ones who have seeded highly, and performed consistently. Obviously, the ones who did so against stronger competition are rated higher on my list. I'm also taking some of the "luck" factor into account. Yes, it's true... some teams rank highly, without playing well. This occurs for a number of reasons. When I make my list I'll try to keep these teams off of it.

2. The prospects - Those teams that I THINK will do well. The ones that haven't performed as strongly as others, but may get their act together in time for nationals. Everyone also needs to take into account that the game has been evolving over the past 5 weeks of competition. This means that teams who kicked-butt week 1, may not be NEARLY as competitive in Atlanta. Maybe they performed poorly, because of the way the game was played, but in Atlanta they will be very powerful. There is a lot of prediction going on here. Pick whoever will do best. (this applies above as well... even if someone kicked butt, I may not think they should be on the top of my list).

3. The darkhorses - Those teams that NO ONE expects to do well, except for me. The ones who could take it all, if they get a little luck. The trick to drafting well (in this, and in the "real" FIRST draft) is to get picks that will perform well, even though no one else expects them to. You need to find that random powerhouse that somehow slipped until the 2nd round, and scoop them up.

4. The statistics - Let's face it... no one has seen everybody. There are enough people participating that I'm likely going to get "stuck" with someone who I've never really heard of. This means that I need some way of evaluating these "last ditch" picks. The ones I don't know anything about. How do I do this without being able to talk to them? (blech)... statistical analysis. So for this, I've made a spreadsheet which contains all the seeding data from ALL the regionals played (I will post this as a whitepaper). From this I've ranked everyone in terms of average points awarded per match (2 for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss). I've combined the data for teams that have played multiple regionals. From this, I can have my final comparison, and maybe pull out something good, from a field I don't know much about.

All in all, this is a pretty cool game.
I can't wait to see how it plays out.
There is a LOT of luck involved, but also a lot of strategy.

Good Luck to all,

John

this is how im thinking we run this thing.

We could get some hosting (i could provide it for now) On which, we could be running 2 SQL databases. One would be for team data, the other for user data. Then you can link certain users to certain teams and set up some kind of system for scoring. This whole thing would be run on its seperate entity, say www.fantasyfirst.com or something. We could get pit Bull 1126 to work on the info part of the site, and me and a few others would do the programming. You would be able to log in to the site, and check all of your stats and stuff

just an idea..

If you have ever played fantasy sports before basically you choose three robots from the list of teams at the championship and you basically add up wins and losses from your three robots and the cumalative scores from their matches. The alliance with the best record (with highest score as the tie breaker).

Suggestion for the draft:
While you are at it with the random number assignments, you should get a second set of random assignments. The first round can be the first assignments, the second round can be the first round picks inverted, and use the second set of assignments for the third round. Just so everyone has a little more of a chance, and there is much less possibility that someone has the last pick in two rounds. Whoever that would be would be shafted, having the last pick in the first round and the last pick over-all.

No.
Do the foward to back and back to forward otherwise there is a chance the guy with the first pick could end up with the first pick in every round. That wouldn't be fair.

About the rep points for awards (I don't feel like searching through all these pages for a quote):
Someone's rep points will increase mighty fast if everyone playing gives them rep points. However, I know someone will forget or ignore fantasy first if they realize their teams didn't do very well. But it has the potential of skyrocketing someones reputation.

Eh.
Rep is more about popularity than it is about a person's status in FIRST.
