Check the divisions list I just added to the Divisions at Championship? thread. We'll talk.
Newton will have some pretty hefty competition acctually. I typed up a list of all the teams and the awards each team got for their robot at regionals. Out of the 74 teams there were 51 robot awards which includes: Regional winner, Regional Finalist, Xerox Creativity, Motorola Quality, Delphi "Driving Tomorrow's Technology", Leadership in Control, and GM Industrial Design.
It'll prove to be a good resource for a start of your scouting if you are doing this division.

The Fridge shall be there :) . This looks like quite a hefty division. Baxter Bomb Squad, The poofs, An entire regional winning alliance. Seems like a tough one to me.
We have none of our regional winner/finalist friends though :( . Oh well.

Just an FYI to people using the word doc as a resource, team 23 isnt around anymore i think you mistook them for team 25, and team 25 won The Leadership in control award at NJ regional, and also the Engineering Inspiration award at Cheasakpeake Regional

You omitted us (340) from the buckeye regional list, we were the #1 seed, winning alliance capt. You also included 45, they were not at Buckeye. 48 was & they were finalists.

Oh wow that's intimidating. By my count there are 23 regional winners in our divison. Considering that #69, who won 2 regionals, is not going to attend Nationals, then assuming that no other team won 2 regionals (I don't think this is the case) that would mean there are 76 regional winners at Nationals. Divide that by 4, and there should be 19 winners in each division. Now factor in teams like 69 that can't make it, or have won 2 regionals, and we are in an ABOVE AVERAGE competitive division.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit intimidated. Actaully a lot intimidated.
May the best teams shine!

hey newton-ers, I have updated my file about our division. Looks like we have some pretty competitive teams. 19 Regional winners, 2 multiple winners, 6 regional finalists, 4 #1 seeds, 2 teams undefeated at a regional. This should be a fun competition. The new file has:
Regional Champions
Regional Finalists
#1 seeds
Top 8 seeds
Performance at each regional
ALL divisions
Each individual division
...room for your input.
I have left room for teams to add their strengths. If you post your info I will update the file & re-post it before I leave next week. I believe the file is easier to read & use. I would love some constructive critism. I will make the file easier to use if I get some.
Thanks

This is a great resource! Thank you for putting this together and offering teams the chance to highlight their strengths. I've never really talked about the current capabilities of Team 48's robot, xtremachen7, so I'll take this opportunity to do so, just this once.
Our robot strengths have definitely expanded as the regional competition season has progressed. Our tank drive base has remained rock solid reliable and consistent throughout the season. Paul, our robot driver, is very aggressive and opportunistic on D, and he's expertly piloted the robot to lay down some great defense all year. We subscribe to the theory that the best offense is a strong defense. We are good at blocking ball corrals with moveable goals and keeping them blocked, actively engaging opposing alliance robots, policing the platform, and getting in the way of almost anything the other alliance wants to do. Partnered with a strong offensive robot, we can make sure you have the time to do what you have to do. Partnered with another defensive-minded robot, we can work together to shut the other alliance down completely.
The nice thing about our robot now is that our telescoping arm has evolved to the point where we can now consistently and quickly HANG in even the most pressure-packed of situations. Ask anyone who witnessed the excitement of the Canadian Regional elims and I think they'd tell you the same. Our drive team has demonstrated the ability to take xtremachen7 from the carpet to the platform to hanging two feet above the platform in under 20 seconds. In our final Q-match in Cleveland, we were on the first platform, and we maneuvered past a hanging robot that had been blocking us, drove up to the second platform, and hung, all with less than 14 seconds remaining in the match. Our fast hanging ability enhances our defensive capabilities by maximizing the time we have to engage the opposing alliance. We can derail hanging attempts from those who take longer to get up on the bar and still have the time to get up there ourselves. In addition to hanging, our copilot Frank is planning on taking our defensive show to the air, using the arm to actively block opponents from capping or descoring 2X balls from goals that are already capped.
I don't expect anyone in Newton to blindly take these statements as fact. Team 48 is looking forward to proving all these capabilities to our fellow division teams on Thursday and Friday. We hope that we can demonstrate to everyone that we are a worthy partner who can work alongside you to vie for the Newton crown. Best of luck to everyone, and I look forward to seeing all of you in Atlanta!

Best of luck to everyone, and I look forward to seeing all of you in Atlanta! For all you Newton teams, Team 48 is just awesome. I've been to four events this season, and they are by far the best robot I've seen in two very important categories:
1. Defense. They have a powerful drivetrain, but more importantly they have a very smart driver, and a great coach. They don't just push people around, they push efficiently, and know when to do it.
2. Quick Hanger. These guys can play defense on the floor for 1:40, then go for the hang and make it with time to spare. I can't overstate this ability.
I played against them in Pittsburgh, and with them in Toronto. Take my word for it, this is a team that can carry an alliance to a championship. They're that good.

You definatly have a nice robot and your team performed well at Cleveland. You were near the top of our pick list. What I want to know is, what happened in the last match of the finals? We really would have liked to go up against you but instead we faced your other 2 partners. Anyhow you sure did make some nice improvments throughout the 2 days there. Can't wait to see you guys again & the rest of the crew from Buckeye.

We found out the hard way that the anti backdrive pins inside the lift system's drill transmissions weren't sufficient for consistently supporting the weight of the robot while hanging. That is what failed in the final match in Cleveland, and that is why we fell. We removed the pins from our transmissions and installed a servo locking system in Canada, and everything works great now.

Newton should be a good division everyone is right about that there are some good bots and a lot of award winners. :) . Most of the teams though were not in our teams regional that was in Florida. So if anyone could give me some early scouting reports on some of the bots in the division it would be much appriciated. One thing i would like to know is how many hangers are in the division becuase i think the majority are.

88 will be in Newton... So far we have won the EI award at NJ and the Judge's Award in NY... On Saturday in Long Island we made a hanging mechonism and it works soooo couple... Look for us hanging around... Of coarse we will be there making so much noise and I'll be there with 100% tie-dye and over 250 BUTTONS!!! (actually I think I'm going to exceed 350 after Nationals!!!)

I would agree 67 looking awesome, that is why we picked them at Buckeye. I don't believe they went to the "Palamentoo" regional. You might want to update the info. Also I would watch out for 254, could be a fun Newton finals if they square off against each other... Or an awesone National fianls if they team up together. Watch out. Oh yah I think we're pretty good too, for hangers.

Yes, and we'll be sure to make the 229 robot picture take up 3/4 of the posterboard too :]
That means we'll have to walk past team 240's pit and your pit to read it. Can you put it on the other side of your pit instead (j/k) ;)
Also, I really don't care how big the pic of our robot is...People will be able to see it from there(your new sign location) just fine.

Hey everyone! Glad to be in the Newton Division with you all. I started to do a bit of scouting the other day and figured I should check out what's allready on Delphi. It looks like what has already been posted on here is exactly what I need, except for the fact that I can't get any of the information posted. Every time I click one of the links (i've tried this on several computers, a couple of other kids have tried too) I get code instead of text. Has anyone else had this problem, and if you're getting this info in text could you please e-mail to to me. Thanks a lot. Good luck too, Newton looks extremely strong!
My e-mail is Nick@Macolini.com (I know its listed but this might be a little more convenient)

 I just tried to get some of the stuff again on one of our school's "lovely" (to put it nicely) computers. I was able to get the first 2 links that I couldn't get at home and save them to a floppy, but i still could not get ElfMaster's stuff. When I clicked the link i kept getting x's and o's and squares and then radomly the words "New Jersey." If someone has this and its correct could you just send that one to me? Thanks.
If you want to get that last one left click and put save target as. Make sure you have excel before you do this. or it will not work.
Team 38 is proud to be in the Newton division! While we didn't place to well at our only regional due to a number of spectacular failures, we're heading to Atlanta very confident in our robot, as we've ironed out most of the major problems. We did very well during our last two matches at UTC, and are very close to having an autonomous capable of knocking off the 10 point balls.
We won the Xerox creativity award for a very creative ball storage method, that has worked very well. Unfortunately, we didn't have our main coach at UTC, so we lacked a bit on the strategy end of things, and essentially tried to chase the bar for almost every match, so I apologize to all who didn't get to see our ball manuevering in action, but look forward to a lot more cool things from us in Newton
For those who were not at UTC, I have a few pictures on our site, and although I've yet to come up with a picture gallery to organize them, here are some:

Wow, tht's pretty ingenious, 38. Looks really cool too.
I'm starting to get both excited, and nervous. In only a few days we'll be competing. And being a rookie, and seeing all these other fantastic bots in our division, it makes me feel . . . nervous. I mean, it's going to be fun to compete either way, but I'm starting to feel a tiny bit out-classed . . . yet that also makes me giddy in a weird sort of way.
I can't wait to see who we get paired up with!

and you made weight????? :ahh: geeez howd you pull that off??? But either way I think that is an unbelievable robot!!!! Can't wait to see it in action!!!
Yeah, we did make weight, fortunately. I think the final weigh in before we shipped was something like 128.6. It definitely looks much heavier than it is...
It's really just aluminum tubing, and a pretty thin stock at that. The nature of the structure makes it rigid, and the "tennis rackets" of wood really help save weight.
I think the coolest thing about the ball pickup is each band wraps around the balls to hold them in place. I think it's pic 2 that shows the cam shaft best- as each rung moves along, a cam pulls each band tight around each ball. It really looks great when we're filled up, and with our 2x ball grabber arms up high, we look like something of a scorpion, as pic 1 shows. Here's some vital stats for those interested in scouting:
Max ball capacity- 7
2x ball- capable of grabbing, holding, and replacing, but only from mobile goal
Wheels- 6 pneumatic tires (I believe 6" diameter, can not climb steps)
Transmission- 2 speed (hi/low) shift on the fly gearbox, triggered by pneumatic cylinder (don't know exact speeds, but we're pretty quick).
Pneumatic goal grabber
Winch driven bar hanger- Hook is deployed by spring energy, once latched from side, hook detaches from arm, and is winched in by drive motors.
Autonomous- only rudamentary motion as is, but many programs have been written and are ready for testing upon uncrating.
If there are any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them via PM! Thanks everyone!
