Since most of the people on these forums are American, I just wanted to know what Canadian stereotypes you have heard and I can tell you if they are in fact true. When we were in Ypsilanti, Michigan, we were constantly asked if the stereotypes were true!

Hmmmm. I can't remember anything. However, I know we were down there with you guys at Ypsi cheering you on (I still have a few flags!) You did a fantastic job and it'd be great to see you again. Uh, accents maybe? I dunno I don't really know any Canadian stereotypes. Enlighten me!

We are bringing tons of Canadian Flags to Atlanta. Yes, I have to admit, we do have accents. I remember talking to someone in Ypsi. and they asked is Canadians actually say OOOT and aboot. And I have to admit, we do. People from the east coast have different accents but we definately sound different from y'all down south!

Do you ever lock your doors?
What does a New England accent sound like? I've lived in CT most of my life, but have spent extended periods of time in other places. It seems to me the New England (CT anyway) doesn't have an accent and pronounces words correctly. Anyone know any different?

In a strip for Foxtrot, the kid w/glasses (his name is escaping me right now) was talking about how he was going to use whatever accent went with the food he was eating. So when he was eating New England clam chowder, he started saying "Pahk the cah in the Hahvahd Yahd." ::shrugs:: The only times I could really hear a major difference in accents were in NY and MA. Don't really know how to describe it though. It's pretty much differences in pronunciation and maybe intonation too.
Now I have a question. How does a Californian (or just West Coast in general) accent sound to you guys? :D

We were allianced with 1114 (Simbotics) at the Pittsburg regional and we made it to the Finals. There robot had a very unique drivetrain on "stilts" that would extend out 6 inches to make it on top of the platform.

Well Team 114 Simbotics is Canadian and so is 1006 (Robot Name: FAST EDDIE) and both of those robots were finalists at the Canadian Regional so I guess you can say we build good robots! By the way, what do you think the best Canadian Robot is? I would have to say Team 1114 and their robot Simon.

First, as a Ypsi kid, sorry if you had bad experiences. We're normally preaty cool. Second, I think some of the Canadian teams are the best; I particularly like 1241.

One guy at school (non-FIRST, here @ Grand Rapids, MI) said, "Canada is a poser United States." I tuthfully disagree, but you asked. I have a good friend and e-mail buddy who lives in Canada. She lives in Ontario.

Nah, no bad experiences at Ypsi. (except for our robot not doing too well!) I also agree that 1241 has a cool robot. It's such a unique design and I'm sure it'll take them far.
Wow great job Port Perry on the Chairmans, you really deserve getting the highest award in FIRST.
Also about the stereotypes, I guess we cherish our hockey, (GO LEAFS - playoff starts today :)) and not to forget the infamous "eh?" after every sentence :D.
About the CND robots... in my opinion I feel that EVERY team participating, CND & American have amazing robots, it's just how they strategize and use that robot to it's full potential that matters to me. Ofcourse there are some options in a robot which give it a slightly higher advantage as others. For example 1114's amazing drive system :)

They are pretty popular I'd say. But that doesn't mean I listen to them. Thanks theory6 for your kind words! theory6=best Rookie Team!!! I HAVE 1 THING TO SAY. GO LEAFS GO!!! Oh yah baby! First game tonight and I think Leafs will win 4-2. Canadians definately love hockey and TIM HORTON'S.

I used to live in Canada. So I'm totally not aware of much accent. I agree though on the NY and MA bit cause having lived in NY as well (moved around a lot when younger) I still have trouble throwing of my accent. I too am partial to team 1241.

Yah. BOO SENS BOO! I still think that the Leafs will take the series. They're a good team, eh? They were playing good hockey in the first period but they fell apart in the second period.

I've heard that before too. Strange. I also heard that Canadian teams work well with teams stocked with University mentors in upstate New York. Strange.
As for the Barenaked Ladies, well let's just say they're a little bit popular. They actually went to my old elementary and high school (Woburn, home of Team 188). I met them when I was in grade 6, and they were shooting the original video for "If I Had A Million Dollars".

2. Is the term "hoser" used as much as people like the McKenzie Bros (SCTV) used it? (and yes I know, the McKenzie's were an embarassement to Canadian pride :p)

This is bound to get someone upset, but here's my take.
Canadians are way more mad about the Winnipeg Jets moving south, than the Quebec Nordiques. At the time of the exodus of the Nordiques, Quebec City was not supporting the team at all. Fan support was abysmal, and no merchandise was being sold. To make matters worse, management was full of morons. The team hadn't had a successful season in a long time. There are even accusations that they tanked games during the 1990 season to draft Eric Lindros. No wonder Eric demanded a trade. Then, they went out and traded the big E to two teams. This situation was a mess.
When the club was sold, people were sad to see the nation lose another team, but most saw this as an eventuality. It was going to happen, so we might as well get used to it.
The story with the Jets was different. In the last season that the Jets played in Winnipeg, the team was still selling out most of their games. Unfortunately, Winnipeg was just too small of a market to hold on to a team. So despite lots of fan support, the team flew south for the winter, only to never return.
To this day people are still upset, and see this whole thing with the Jets as part of the Americanization of hockey. A lot of bitterness still exists.
I'm not saying people weren't upset about the Nordiques, but it didn't enter the nation's psyche as much as move of the Jets.
P.S. I'm always up for a good chat about hockey.

I haven't really noticed a real California accent. But that's not because i live here, I'm originally from the Southeast (yes, I do slur words and say y'all) and I also lived in NH. But I haven't really noticed any quirky accents in California.

1) Eh? <---say that word and you're labeled a canadian...even if you may be from a northern state
2) You're national defense consists of a calvary
3) its all snow
4)polar bears are as numerous as our squirrels
5) everyone icefishes
6) its pack-full of American draft-dodgers
7) you hate our politics (is that a misconception??)
8) you all speak english (many speak french too, correct?)
9) you drink at 16 and drive at 18 (misconception??)
10) you all have blonde hair and light colored eyes
11) there is a non-existant crime rate
those are ones that i have heard...although 7,8,9 i thought up and then began questioning them myself as a possible truth. although i do know that most all canadians i have met were very very nice...not to mention pretty good looking too. what stereotypes do ya'll have for us? the last canadian i talked to told me that he thought all the teens in the USA all went out and partied everynight and did drugs and stuff...he even went as far to say that he thought the movie 'The Fast and Furious' was a normal thing in our country. haha.

Couldn't help it, it's too me, I've had 1 ticket for "71" in a 45, more like it was only freaking 63, but still too fast. But yes isn't driving fast, and partying and thinking you are invencible part of the "American Teen Dream".
Ahh yes, and you might be a Canadian if you don't get the "You might be a redneck if" jokes.

LOL I love the Foxworthy Countdown.......and the You Might Be a Redneck jokes (my dad used to live in Arkansas) and a lot of my friends call me a reneck/hick. :P (I'm really not)!

Yeah, but the current Avs franchise picked up one of the leagues premiere players in Peter Foresberg...I still have Foresberg rookie cards with him in a Flyers jersey :p Lindros is a bum and he will always be a bum :p
But as an Avs fan, all I can say is "Thanks Quebec!" :D

we have summers here too ... but it snows a lot (havent put the winter coat away yet)

maybe in the territories (yukon/northwest territories/nunavut) .. actually northwest territories has license plates in the shape of a polar bear ... as a random fact ... but here in ontario .. ive never seen a polar bear
