View Full Version : FIRST Frenzy 2004. Coolest team giveaway?

I would have to say that the coolest team giveaway I got was the two limited edition pins that I got.

One featured Andy Grady and said Andy Loves Hanson.

The second cool giveaway I got was a pin with "Dave (Lavery) says "That's Pimp.""

Finally, I got a pin that was made from a Ford logo.. That was kind of cool.

What did everyone else get that they thought was the coolest team giveaway this year??

And, what did everyone think of my team's (237) wooden limited edition to 500 stars??

And, what did everyone think of my team's (237) wooden limited edition to 500 stars??

During the elimination rounds in Archimedes, the #8 alliance teams were trading pins, and one of the adults on 237 gave me the pin off his shirt (which I thought was extremely cool). I feel special having a limited edition pin...I think they're really cool! :D

I didn't really get anything besides standard pins (no special edition stuff for me) but Team 564 gave out freeware at LI. They told me that they didn't actually get to give it out at nationals because of tech problems.

It was called the DSD (Driver Strategy Database) and I don't know if it was the "coolest" giveaway but it definitely gets my vote for most impressive. There's a searchable database with name and contact info for a large number of teams, as well as the main function, which allows you to create animations of your strategy that you can then show to other teams. It's pretty much obsolete now (except for offseason events) because it's specific to this year's game- but if you were lucky enough to get a copy of it at LI, I suggest you take a look at it, it's really impressive and professional.

one of the adults on 237 gave me the pin off his shirt (which I thought was extremely cool).
A woman at LI (I think she was a parent) gave me the 311 pin off her shirt. (This was after I gave her my Team 30 bag after taking all my other pins out of it...now that I think about it, it was a pretty cute little scene, all in all.) Yay for nice people! =)

I like my Sie-H20-Bots wood pin. I didn't realize it was limited edition when I got it. It's nice to see other people with wood pins. Sadly our quantity of wood pins was limited to judges, ambassadors, and VIPs. Dave Lavery did ask me if our wood pins were laser cut. I have to get a picture of them up sometime. The lady who cut them is amazing on the scroll saw. My other favorites are my special edition MOE pins and my MOE sticks. :clap clap, clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap, Go MOE!

To every team we played with and some people who asked for them my team gave away copies of The America's Army Special Forces Video Game, US OTC mouse pads, and US OTC coasters.

Well I must inject Team's 45 playing cards. They definitely weren't something I expected to see. I saw those Andy Grady pins but never got one :( . My favorite was the JVN really-limited-edition pins I saw at UTC (?). Again I didn't get one, wish I did. Maybe off-season, throw one my way (hint hint someone from 229)? I usually collect the pins from the alliances my team has been partnered with the past few years, but I didn't get one from 386 (got a hat though....thaaaaanks) or 237 (if anyone wants to trade for one this summer...come see me!).

I don't know what they are called but Team FRUSION ( 364 ) gave away the things where you tip them and they go " woooaaahpp, waahhhhpp " I didn't get one but my sister did, and I stole it and play with it all the time. :-)

That and the little devil rubber ducks. Those things act as good stress balls when your the driver in finals.

Those things ended up all over our hotel getting stuck in the elevators.
One of our girls ended up with these cool flashy teeth she said she got from the GM booth. I don't know if she got it from the GM people or from a particular team but they were pretty cool.

My favorite has to be the 1996 Operation Orange pin I got at the History of FIRST workshop. I also liked the frisbee from 48, and the parachute guy from the robodawgs was, well, lets just say one or two made their way down the atrium in the Marriot. ;)

I thought that Chief Delphi had the coolest and most practical giveaways. The plastic side guards that attached to glasses were the best. I saw so many people wearing them! It was so convinient to be able to turn glasses with polycarb lenses into safety glasses by adding these clever little shields. Great job for "raising the bar" on team giveaways!

The parachute guys were the best! Or the frisbee things! Our advisors and a few of us had some major fun throwing them out of the hotel room windows...

I think the coolest giveaways were:
- Carabeaners (I'm playing w/ them right now)
- Blinki Lights
- Those wooden bananas...ok, I just felt like adding them to the list :P
- Duckies/Alien dolls
- Dave "That's pimp" - which team was giving those out?

Ha..I have one of them in my room right now. I forget who I stole it from. I also liked the cyberwolves game they gave out. I just haven't had time to play yet. The parachute men were fun. One came close to parachuting 6 floors off our balcony at the embassy suites. I guess it could have got the hackey sack...oops.

The wooden pins your team passed around ROCKED! I was amazed - particularly when I found out they were all done by hand by one team Mom with a scroll saw!

I think it was 229 who gave out stress-reliever balls at LI.

I definitely got some use out of those. They were cool looking too!

This is probably the wrong forum to bring up the rules in, but. . . .
Isn't it illegal to give away anything but pins?

Technically you're not supposed to give anything away, your supposed to trade. You're also not supposed to have music in the pits, music on your carts, powered carts etc........

Isn't it illegal to give away anything but pins? No. The rules do state though that food items are dissallowed. Pins and other items are allowed to giveaway/trade. So as long as you don't give away food *cough* like some teams did this year *cough* then you are good to go.

Nobody like our flashing Canadian snowflakes? :(I wanted one of them so bad.. but was not able to get one. :(

Although, if you really want to be popular next year, your team should have extra team jersey's to trade with people. I know of at least a handfull of people who wanted them in a bad way, myself included.

Some people did get a Team 188 jersey. I believe that a few members of Team 22 got some from when the came and were billeted with our team. I know of 1 MC who got one but that might be all. Now If you would like to purchase one that might be arranged. I believe that they cost our students $40.00 CDN so thats why they were not too available. As for the flashing snowflakes, we made 600 that were given out at 2 regionals and Championships. If you really want one of those I know that I gave some to the mentors of Buzz while watching the Leafs in Atlanta.

In the Regional Events section of The FIRST Website (http://www.usfirst.org/robotics) under Site Info it says, "Do not give out any free products. . . ". While it mentions food/drinks specifically, I'm pretty sure that the word "any" covers everything else.

candy, water, soft drinks, or fruit.
site info (http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2004/Site_Info/2004ChampionshipSiteInfo.pdf)

In otherwords don't compete with the local vendors.
and don't create an increased cleaning situation for facilities.

At So Cal we clarified the site rules. They just didn't want any "hard" food brought in from the outside - no glass bottles, no fried chicken that would leave bones...

Turned out we could bring in "soft" foods - i.e. pizza, mcdonalds, subway, unless the crowd got so big and facilities felt the need to "tighten" the rules and scale back to no soft foods allowed in at all either.

So Cal "site info" uses the same words "Do not give out any free products..." and goes on to give examples of what they mean, edibles and drinkables.

Our team gave out nut n volts magazines, yo yo's, frisbees, rcu armbands...in addition to buttons.

We have a middle school spirit team that picked our giveaways and we let them decide. Little screwdrivers and stuff that is hard to describe but was very popular at the regionals-little putty things that make *splat* noises when you stick your finger in. Very middle school! My favorite though is our bright yellow, six sided "Robot on Board" signs. They are on the van right now.

Let's see... at nationals some people on our team had silly putty in Easter Eggs, except I don't know who they got it from. However, it amused me endlessly, so that was good. :)

I also liked 868's plastic callipers because they were cute...and the technokats keychain flashlights.

Hmm..someone gave out bubbles, too. Lots of fun stuff this year :)

By the way...if anyone ever wants a 469 banana I have a million extras...

Not us with the caution tape but maybe some of our "Robot on Board" signs made it to the nationals, even if we didn't. Our look was definitely black tie this year....
