View Full Version : "Put Andy on Survivor" - help needed

Andy Baker
11-05-2004, 17:11
Life is more fun if you take some risks every so often. I am taking a risk and I need some help from my friends.

I grew up watching entirely too much television, and I consider myself a product of the TV generation. Recently, my wife, oldest daughter and I have watched the last two seasons of Survivor and we have enjoyed it. We like the good guy / bad guy aspect, the competition aspect, and the fact that the show is based on inter-personal relations between contestants. We especially like the contestants who show good character and "gracious professionalism" as they play. There are things we don't like about the show and we use those things to tell our daughter "what not to do".

I talked to my wife and asked if she would support me if I applied to be on the show for the upcoming season. She said yes, but doesn't think that I will make it. I don't either, but it is worth a try. Sure, my chances are like that of a lottery, but it may be worth the effort.

In order to be a contestant, I have to fill out an application and send it in with a 3 minute video. The video must tell them who I am and why I would make the ultimate Survivor. They suggest being creative. So, that is what I will do. First, I will say who I am and then why I would make the ultimate Survivor (see reasons below). Then, at the end of the tape, I would like to include many groups of people saying: "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR". The more people in the group saying this, the better it will look.

That is where you come in. If you want to help me do this, get a group of people, put them in front of a digital video camera, and have them say "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR" at the same time. Then, send me an email and I will reply to you.

(if you have any other ideas, let 'em rip)

If the producers like the application, they will interview me.

You may be wondering why I would want to be on Survivor. Here are my reasons:
1. It would be fun.
2. I think that I could do well. I am deeply competitive while still being honest and gracious. I am good with people but I also don't take too much crap.
3. I would like to promote positive role models on television, and I would fill that role.
4. This would help promote FIRST. I would wear FIRST t-shirts while on camera.
5. It would be like winning the lottery; while it is not realistic to win, it is neat to dream about it. If I would win, some money would go back to FIRST (and other local charities).
6. I really don't have any secrets and I like to be accessible (translation: I am a bit of a showboat and wear my heart on my sleeve).

So... could you help? Send me a short video clip of your FIRST team (or group of friends) and say "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR". I wish that I had time to wait for IRI to do this, but the application needs to be in by June 22.

Once I get a video done, I will let you guys proof it and give me input to make it better. As many of you know, my video editing skills are minimal, so any advice is appreciated.

We'll see how this goes... it could be fun.

Thank you,
Andy B.

Andy,
Ask Erin from 125 to get everyone to do it at Beantown Blitz.
Or any other off season comp.

You're already my hero Baker! (I may as well start kissing up now if he's serious about going for the $10^6) I will see what I can do around here.

Aww, does that mean i have to put a temporary halt to my organization of Andy Baker for President campeign.

also you could use some old clip of yourself from like maize craze, that would make you stand out to the selection people.

Andy, if you get on you will be my new hero!!!

LOL... good one.

Thanks, guys. You are all cool in my book, that is for sure. I do have some video from 1998 with me on ESPN, so I might use that. I only have 3 minutes, and if I go over they won't accept it. So... if any of you are planning something, keep it really short.

Also, keep in mind that our chances here are between slim and none.

So... could you help? Send me a short video clip of your FIRST team (or group of friends) and say "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR". I wish that I had time to wait for IRI to do this, but the application needs to be in by June 22.
Your friends on Wildstang will help you out. I hope you make it.

One suggestion I would have is when you do your video with your group, be holding a sign that says where the group is from. I think the producers would be impressed to have people from all over the United States and Canada.

i'm suprised that nobody mentoned this yet, but...

see if you can get Dean Kamen to do it. maybe one of the screening people would recognize him...

unfortunatly, i'm lacking in the digital-camera department, but would be will ing to participate if someone around my area (read: state of FL) organized something.

Amanda 'I would have picked "The Swan"' Morrison No offense to Andy, but I just couldn't see him competing in a beauty pagent. Though after a facelift, 23.75 hours a day at the gym and some more "work" .. hmm - better stick with survivor!! ;)

Let me know what I can do to help, Andy! When does the application have to be in by? If not before IRI, I'm sure we could gather a whole mess of people together to "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR!"

I hate survivor, but I'm a softy for crazy causes. I'll see if I can convince some people to do this, even thought none of us know you or have any reason to help you ;)

This is actually very interesting. FIRST logo during prime time would be serious publicity, and we could point it out to people who think FIRST is a crazy nerd underground organization. :D

Taken out of context, that makes for a good spotlight quote :)

And is it just me or is the spotlight button the same as the reputation one?

The above was asked because I neither read the front page announcement nor cleared my 1gb Firefox cache. :D

Well good luck man, I know I'll be rootin for yah, and if this endeavor fails, you can always try American Idol. Then maybe, The Apprentice, I think I would find it funny to hear Donald Trump say " Andy ..your Fired " or " Andy your Hired "

good luck man, go nuts with it

I saw the thing Brandon had up when he was updating VB3 before I saw this, and I was like "he has to be kidding... why on Earth would Andy want to be on Survivor?" Then, my next thought, when I heard you actually were planning on applying was "they'll never pick him... he's too nice and normal ... they like weird psychos." However, I would say if you do get in, you'd make a much better contestant than all those weird psychos they like to throw on there ;) Anyways, good luck, and I hope you make it... it would give me a reason to watch again.

11-05-2004, 23:59
Probably the best way to do this is to email it to my home email (andybaker45@aol.com). Due to my own editing, I will need emails by June 8, to be conservative.

Thank you all,

Oh, so those random sweeps of the Martian landscape are really not that random after all?? They are trying to spell something with the tracks? SWEET!!
Wow. what an autonomus code that must be... lol

Problem is though, that we gotta send another probe to mars to take aerial photo's of the tracks, unless the rovers have special aerial camera's already? Or maybe they just stack up on top of each other to get the "good shots".

We have a team meeting tomorrow night, and since we're doing a presentation to the school board, we'll all be wearing our team shirts, so I'll record them, and I'll try to figure out how to get it to you.

I think one of the Californian teams has Peter Waydo as an engineer on their team, and he is married to Christa Hastie of Survivor:Pearl Island. Christa was very gracious talking to our team in Atlanta about her experiences in Survivor and maybe their team can cajole her into helping you with a videotape, too?

Great Idea, I think you stole it though, from me:-)

I didn't get a chance to read the 4 pages of replies, I know there are a bunch of "Take me with you"

I have considered the Survivor issue for a while.

I have yet to see a teacher there, especially a science teacher.
Thats where I come in.

I have long argued I want to do Survivor Siberia (Snow, not warm beaches)
cuz I think most people will fold if they *really * have to find shelter and fire.
But they will never do Siberia. Its cold, cold means no skimpy outfits on certain castaways.

So Luck to your endevour. Let me see what I can do with my team

Baker you krazy kat, you!

Good luck!!

Only seeing a few episodes of Survivor (and about five minutes each time), I really don't know what people have to do on the show. Andy-if you got on the show, I would watch it. If you can help to build a robot and finish it in six weeks, then you will have no trouble on Survivor (from what I've seen). :)

Yes, technically when Rupert graduated it was Haworth High School. Now the only high school is Kokomo High School.

Take some video of when you won the WFA, 20,000 folks applauding the name "Andy Baker." Pretty impressive. If you want, dub the sound with a bunch of people shouting "put Andy on the show."

Problem is, you will be dropped off on a remote island the first week of January.

Mr. Bill

Good idea. The application says that taping is this fall and ends in December.

So, I need to put together this 3 minute video. I am supposed to say who I am and why I would make the ultimate survivor. Here is my outline below. You guys can help me make it better. Right now, it is probably too wordy, and it needs to have portions cut out (this depends on what video cuts I get). I would be saying the things written as I talk to the camera. Feel free to give feedback to make it better.

-----------------------------

“Put Andy on Survivor” 3 minute video

(Andy in back yard of his house, with camera on close up and woods in the background)

“Hi, my name is Andy Baker. I grew up in small town Indiana and have a very good life. I am fortuneate to have a great wife and 3 daughters.”

(walks inside house to wife and kids)

“Mary and I both grew up in the area and have lots of family around. We go to church and live a steady life. I’ve got it pretty good here, with a beautiful wife, great kids, a nice house and a good job.

I work as a mechanical engineer in Kokomo at Delphi Electronics and Safety. Delphi is a huge company that makes automotive electonics. We have plants around the world, and gobs of people work in the Kokomo plant. I’ve worked here for 13 years, since I graduated from college. On my job, I design automated equipment for our production lines. I design on a computer, using CAD to make machines that the operators use on the production floor… it’s pretty cool and I like it.

A few years ago, Delphi asked me to help out a local robotics team that included many high school students being led by some engineers and teachers. This team builds robots in a nationwide competition called FIRST Robotics. I got involved in 1998 and have been a coach on this team for 7 years. It has been a great experience. I get to coach kids, design competition robots, and be a positive role model. I absolutely love it. After playing sports in high school and college and being in a local rock band, I can easily say that this robotics team thing is the coolest thing I have ever done. Heck, we even made ESPN!”

(play short clip of 1998 National Championship from ESPN)… then..

(play short clip of Andy winning WFA)

There are many robotics teams around the nation and even some in other countries. This is a huge education trend with kids and adults working together to learn technology. Within this community of robotics competition, I have lots of friends:

(play clips of “Put Andy on Survivor”)

(Andy with guys in friend’s basement, playing poker)

Sometimes, I get to hang out with friends. Poker is cool to play with the guys, but we seem to just give our money back and forth to each other. Just getting together to do something fun is great, since we all have busy schedules. I like to cut loose when I get a chance, but as I get older those times get fewer.

(arm around Mom, in farm lot with hogs in background)

Against my mom’s wishes, I watched too much TV as a kid. Heck, I still like to watch many shows. (points to house and wispers) They don’t even have cable here!

I’ve liked the “reality shows” since they began with the Real World in the early 90’s. Mary and I have watched some of the Survivor seasons and I would like to show how a normal guy from Indiana can “outwit, outsmart, and outplay” all of these other ya-hoos. With my design, competition, and strategy background combined with a farm-boy work ethic, I could kick some serious butt. I’ll tell you right now that when I win a million, I am coming right back here to my good job, nice house, great kids and beautiful wife.

So… "Put Andy on Survivor!"

---------------

So... kick the tires and let me know what to change.

Thanks,
Andy

Baker,

A little constructive criticism. I think what you have so far is very informative...almost too informative. I've seen a few of the audition videos that previous survivors have submitted, and most of them show some really goofy creativity, which I think you need to add to the video. Survivor is looking for people who really grip them, they want to see someone with a very memorable personality. (which you have, you just need to show it) I think that the video's of FIRST teams yelling is a great idea. Making the producers think "wow, this guy knows alot of people for just being a farmboy from indiana" is a really good thing. What you need along with that, is something that really makes you stand out, wrestle a pig or something while exclaiming how competitive you are (not a joke, this is the goofy stuff they are looking for).

Good luck...remember, make it memorable, make your personality stand out and you'll do fine!

I agree with Andy Grady - make yourself memorable. I think the survivor producers are looking for somebody who really stands out as opposed to an average joe - which, of course, Andy Baker is NOT!! I certainly like the pig-wrestling idea!

Also, your script needs to be streamlined a bit. Everything you have in there is awesome but I think you're going to run out of time in a big hurry! Having taught TV Media for a few years I know how a simple script can get out of hand and overrun the time limit quickly. Have you done a walk-through of your script while timing it to see how long it takes? I'd also leave enought time at the end for all of the "Put Andy on Survivor" clips. Those may be the most memorable part of the video! Big crowds cheering the next Indiana survivor winner!! You'll follow in the footsteps of the great Rupert Boneham - the latest Survivor millionaire and America's favorite survivor!

Good luck Andy!!

Here's some tips I found out, and some good ideas to use:

-Don't sit infront of the couch and give a resume, walk around, act, move the camera around.
-Driving while talking to the camera is always good
-Do silly stuff that's memorable and funny.
-Pump up the volume for the 'PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR' parts.

Hope that helps.

Andy

I agree with Andy G. and Sean. Being a super nice, extremely dedicated, talented guy with a great family living in a rural home. although enviable, is not going to get the job done. Your relatively laid back, easy going demeanor is going to work great once you get on the show, but you got to get there first.

You have got to get their attention, something that separates you from the thousands of the entries. Maybe start the video dubbing Woodie's voice "who here thinks Andy Baker should be on Survivor?" and show 20,000 people jump up and applaud as you run down to the stage. Maybe you could dub in a large group of voices chanting Andy, Andy Andy.

I don't know, I am just guessing, but I don't think you should be too bizarre, cause I think they try and get some different cross sections of personalities that viewers can attach to, but again, "you gots to get their attention". Too bad you aren't a retired Chippendale dancer, that might have helped.

Baker,

Thinking about this a little more, figured I would throw out an idea/suggestioni for the flow of your video...

<<Video starts with clips of various groups of FIRST people saying "Hi we're from [insert city/state here], and we want you to PUT ANDY ON SURIVIVOR!!!>>

<<Camera pans up from feet to head with music from 2001 Space Oddesey in the backround>>

"Hi, I am Andy Baker, and I want YOU to put ME on Survivor!"

<<Camera breaks away to Andy walking in the woods>>

"Why would I make the Ultimate Survivor you ask?"

<<Cuts to Andy wrestling in the mud with a pig>>

"IM COMPETITIVE!" <<Pins pig like a wrestler>> "YEAH I WIN AGAIN!"

<<Cuts to Andy in front of a bunch of confused looking Technokats students and a White board with large equations written all over it>>

"IM INTELEGENT!....ok guys, any questions? <<All the students in the room raise thier hands>>

<<Cuts to Andy doing some work on a computer>>

"IM HARD WORKING!" <<clicks out of Microsoft Office and behind it is a game of solitare>>

<<Cuts to Andy holding a fishing pole by a river or some outdoors spot>>

"IM AN OUTDOORS MAN!" <<Pulls up the fishing line to find a can of tuna duct taped to the hook at the end>>

<<Cuts to a picture of any next to the various awards that the Technokats have won over the years>>

"IM AWARD WINNING!" <<Shows a clip of winning WFA>>

<<Cuts back to Andy standing in front of a large group of Techokats and other teams if possible>>

"And most of all, IM POPULAR!!!" <<The group screams out PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR">>

<<More clips of people saying "PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR", closes out with some sort of sign that says that (something flashy).>>

It may seem silly at points, but it would definately be an attention grabber, not to mention entertaining! Also I would try to get PUT ANDY ON SURVIVOR on camera as much as possible (i.e. Maybe instead of having Solitare on the computer, you have Chief Delphi up with posts of everyone with the phrase in big letters showing.

Once again, good luck!

On the heels of Mr. Lavery's pictures -
Can we get the dignitaries on camera urging the need for Andy on Survivor?

Anyone have connections at their university or at a major ballpark?
Actual footage of "Put Andy Baker on Survivor" on a big screen would be nice.

Let's see
I'm thinking we, at least, need defining locations in these shots. A bunch of kids with robots in different places is ok, but

Kids, Robot, Golden Gate bridge in background
Kids, Robot, Time Square in background
Kids, Robot, Liberty Bell
Kids, Robot, Washington Monument
Kids, Robot, St. Louis Arch
Kids, Robot, Plymouth Rock
Kids, Robot, Canadian Landmark (sorry I'm clueless north of the border)
Kids, Robot, Brazil
Kids, Robot, Mt. Rushmore
Kids, Robot, NASA HQ
Kids, Robot, Arizona Desert
Kids, Robot, The Alamo
Kids, Robot, you get the idea

Put Andy Baker on Survivor
Why?
He's: energetic, a leader, strong, really handsome (cough), a national award winner, resourceful, a team player, trustworthy ...

We can show exactly how far reaching Andy's persona really is.
What do you think Baker?

Also remember, if you get into the interviews, you may not be able to tell us that you're interviewing....so I'll pass this advice on now.

When I saw Sam & Heidi from The Apprentice (another Mark Burnett show, like Survivor) at Babson a couple of weeks ago, they went a bit into their interviews and how it was what they did in there as well as their videos that made them stand out.

Heidi told the story of how she was put into a room with 12 other candidates and their first question was about ethics. This guy next to her started to go on and on with a point that she didn't agree with, and she blurted out, "Oh, that is complete BS!"...and then followed up with her interpretation of ethics using the situation that he had already given. They told her later that they really liked that she wasn't afraid to stand up for herself when someone else disagrees. (And although I don't personally agree with interrupting someone else and telling them their idea is BS, that's her way of doing things..and I'll do things another way.)

Sam, however, has the better story: he went to the Washington DC casting call to find a four hour line. So, he walked to the front of the line and offered a guy $50 if Sam could walk in with him. When they were brought into the room and asked about ethics (again, the first question), Sam said, "You want to know about ethics? I just paid this guy $50 to walk in with him for this interview!"

So, whether you agree with their tactics or not, be sure to not be afraid to speak up and give them a good taste of the personality of Andy Baker. This should shine through in your video as well...but I know you won't have much problem doing that :)

Exactly what I was thinking- I've done video for the past 4 years and time is all-important, thats the beauty of digital editing. Grady's idea is awesome, it's amazing what people do to get on survivor, I remember Rupert catching a baby alligator and some others riding topless, but hey, wrestling with a pig is nothing us CD'ers would laugh at :P

I do know that if Baker makes it I'll be glued to the TV every thursday evening, even if its the last day of build season

I'm not sure if it's possible with the current timeline (let alone safety) - but what about a wrestling "tag-team" scenario with a FIRST robot and Andy against a pig (or two)? You might be able to just stage parts of it and do a good job editing it all together. I'm sure survivor has had audition tapes done with people wrestling various animals, but I bet they've never had an instance of wrestling with (or against) a robot AND a pig!! GOOD LUCK!!

Update:

I went up to the homestead last night to get some pig-wrestling footage and rope-swinging-into-lake footage. The pig clips turned out to be more like a Andy-chasing-around-pigs footage. There are a couple of shots that will work, though. I ended up grabbing a piglet and calling it a certain name. The rope swing stuff is ok.

Also, I've got some other footage, going off of Grady's suggestions... but I only have 1 team's "Put Andy on Survivor" video - thanks to the Anne Bergeron and the Circuit Runners, team 1002. The Wonderland footage from Canada is coming, also so that will be 2 clips from FIRSTers. If you have any footage to send, drop me a note. DJ Fluck and I are going to edit this stuff and put together a 3-minute clip on Friday (6/11).

I'll give another update in a few days, and then post a link to the clip.

If you have any last minute videos to send, PM or email me soon!

Thanks,
Andy B.

I'd say the hardest to deal with would be John, Andy, and Big Mike.

Brandon is helpless without a keyboard (HA!), and even though he's tall, I can take him. DJ would do something dumb and blow himself up with homemade explosives. Steve and Karthik would be too busy doing their hair to catch food, and therefore would starve. Jess Boucher and Erin ... will be disposed of (evil smile) because I don't have any good way to get rid of them! Woodie and Dean... they'd forget to show up. There's a game in the works, people!

As for John and Big Mike, I'll let them 'pool wrassle' and probably forget how to swim. Karthik, in a last attempt, will come back and serenade Amanda to try and melt her off the island, but hunger will take him in the end! (The boy can only last so long... he's a beanpole!) Andy Baker will be too busy trying to figure out how to make a good transmission from a coconut and forget about the contest.

Amanda Morrison WINS!

I hope you all take this in as much fun as I did. :) I'm excited to be on this list with so many big names, and so many great people.

It's true, it takes a while to get my hair just right. Would I be allowed to bring my entire hair care regiment as my luxury item? You know, it's hard being this beautiful...:)

As for the starvation bit, I can go extended periods of time without food, it goes with the territory of maintaining my supermodel like figure. ;)

Anyway, it wouldn't be an issue, because we all know that Amanda can't resist my voice. It's just too angelic.

End result, Karthik wins.

Andy, I sincerely think that you would be the most apt person to be on survivor.
Personally, I've never been a fan of survivor (actually i have never watched it  but if you get accepted to it ... I will watch it religously for as long as you are there. And don't worry I have hopes that you'll make it and if you don't then the shows sucks all together cuz you are a survivor to us. So don't be discouraged and good luck!! :)

And like I said, I'll be a faithful watcher if you make it! I'll call every week and tell the people of the show to be extra nice to you ... he he :D

Are they at least going to let you know one way or the other? Or are they expecting the applicants to take a hint if they don't hear from them by mid-August? It inhales audibly not knowing either way and not to mention the anticipation also.

Nope... no contact at all. It's most likely not going to happen.

However, if we work together like this again, I think that we can compile a good entry for someone* in the future. This could be the start of something kinda neat: when one of us needs the help of the FIRST (or ChiefDelphi Forums) community, they can ask for input like this.

We can do this collaborative thing with regard to writing letters (like the WRRF did with getting Federal $$ last year), putting a video together, or making phone calls.

This is a good thing. I am really not disappointed that I heard nothing from this. Obviously, I did not expect to make it on the show, but I hoped it would happen. There is a big difference to me between hopes and expectations.

*: it would be someone else's turn to do this

Thank you all again for the support and encouragement in this fun endeavor.

Andy B.

Sorry to hear you didn't make it, Andy. I'd have loved to see you on Survivor, and I think you'd have done great. You're still our ultimate Survivor :)

Andy,

DUde im sorry you didnt make it. However i think its for the best...you are such a good man, that i would hate for you to get caught up in all the political crap that happens after. The people they put on are backstabbing people, and i think you should stay the way you are. but it was worth the shot and a video tape.

`Greg!

Really sorry to see this happen Andy, but there's always Big Brother, right? ;)

Hey, I've got an idea. At nats next year, we'll select 16 FIRSTers and strand them without food or water in the wilderness of Atlanta. :D

I'm glad you're taking it so well. Good GP! (I don't like reality TV anyway ;) )

Big Brother?!

I could see the twist for next season...Andy Baker gets put in the house with a FIRSTer, AND NEITHER OF THEM KNOW IT! (dun dun duuuuuuun...)

I couldn't resist...if you're watching BB5, you know what I'm saying.

Hey if all else fails just try try again.... you could start gathering all of the clips that people have taken of you from FIRST... i would be more than happy to get you the master copy of the video that flowerday posted of the IRI talent show...then you should start making the video now so when it comes time to enter again you have a video all made up and ready! If you want any editing help i can help you becuase well... video editing is what I do... I would also reccomend that at FIRST regionals have a bunch of teams stand with you somewhere and tape all of them saying "put Andy on Survivor" you have time until the next casting call so you can get people to do big group things.

And if all else fails sit up in a tree and tell them that you are a mentor of a FIRST team.. if you can deal with us students you can deal with a month or so on an island in the middle of nowhere anyday!
