View Full Version : Fantasy FIRST Battlecry Division 3

Joe Ross
04-06-2004, 14:40
Division 3 consists of the following people:

Joel J.
Karthik
JVN
Andy Grady
Tom Schindler
Koko Ed
Joe Ross

This is a closed division, we aren't accepting anyone else. Invitations were done by PM. This is being done a little bit differently then FIRST Fantasy has been done in the past. with the differences below.

Less people then teams. Since there are 42 teams, with 4 rounds and 7 people, there will be 14 teams that aren't drafted. That way people don't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for their last pick.

Entry fee. There was an entry fee, like I proposed in the FIRST fantasy suggestions thread after nationals. Invited people needed to PM me your first 10 choices. The list didn't have to be their final list, but it shows that they've done some thinking. Also, they had to nominate one more person they would like to invite.

No fall back list. In the past, if you weren't availible, you got the best team availible from a list of the teams with the best records. I think we have enough time to be able to do a full live draft, and I'd like to do that. If for some reason someone doesn't show up for a while, and there are several other people waiting to pick, that position will be skipped and they can pick for their spot as soon as they come back from any remaining teams.

If you would like to participate in this type of closed division for IRI, send me a pm. Some things that I will consider is how active you are on chiefdelphi, how you've done in previous FIRST Fantasy events, and whether you are heavily involved in strategy or scouting. Think of that PM as a way to prove you can play with the big boys ;).

On to the draft order. Rounds 1 and 3 are unique and rounds 2 and 4 are the reverse of 1 and 3.

Round 1:
1. JVN
2. Koko Ed
3. Joel J.
4. Karthik
5. Joe Ross
6. Tom Schindler
7. Andy Grady

Round 2:
8. Andy Grady
9. Tom Schindler
10. Joe Ross
11. Karthik
12. Joel J.
13. Koko Ed
14. JVN

Round 3:
15. Andy Grady
16. Joe Ross
17. Karthik
18. Joel J.
19. JVN
20. Tom Schindler
21. Koko Ed

Round 4:
22. Koko Ed
23. Tom Schindler
24. JVN
25. Joel J.
26. Karthik
27. Joe Ross
28. Andy Grady

For those participating. Remember that this is a live draft, so we need to make sure we get at least two picks done a day to be done in time. If you won't be around for a while, I will accept your list of picks via PM (or for the first round or two, you can tell me to use the list from your entry fee). However, I won't pick for you unless you tell me to.

Let the picking begin! JVN, you're up first.

Andy Grady

Oh boy, let the battle of the ego's begin! JVN, this is your chance to back your mouth up and surpass the true strategy king of FIRST...ME! (HA!...Like that will ever happen!). You've been dreaming of this day buddy...BRING IT. The Evil Empire is comming full force!

-Andy Grady

P.S. Don't think I forgot about the rest of you, I'll make sure I wave to you on my way to the top! ;)

Karthik

Think of that PM as a way to prove you can play with the big boys ;).If this is for the big boys, how did JVN and Grady get in here? ;)

Let the trash talking begin.

Andy Grady

If this is for the big boys, who did JVN and Grady get in here? ;)

Let the trash talking begin.

Ah, Karthik, the young and upcoming star...and the only person who deserves double the points for spelling his name right on the SAT's. Its quite funny considering that when we were all making our suggestions for who to invite into the league, your name was suggested by the majority of us. You must understand...we see alot of promise in your ability...so we must crush your ego before you end up like JVN, struggling to get your head out the door.* ;)

(* - Or like me, struggling to get my head out the Airline hanger!)

The only thing we know for certain is that no one from a yooo-teeee-seee team is gonna take this thing. We should have considered some sort of handicap for you poor souls.

Personally, my money is on myself. But that's because I only take safe bets.

What about the lone west coaster?

JVN

What about the lone west coaster? You have a strong tie in your life to NY state, which as everyone knows, gives you a natural advantage in any contest.
No sympathy.

Joel J
04-06-2004, 17:58
I have an idea.. after we post our pick, we say who is next on the list.. like for example, in place of my previous post I would say:I choose team 571. Karthik, you are up!In doing that we won't have to keep looking at the big list.

Joe Ross

Does that negate Joel's UTC affiliation? Or is his NY tie not strong enough, yet.

There is a west coast? ;)

Karthik

I pick team 1114...

Oh yeah, this competition only has American teams. In that case I'll take 69.

Joe Ross, you're up.

Joe Ross
05-06-2004, 00:03
I pick team 222. Tom Schindler, you're up next

Tom Schindler

I want 61...

Grady, you're up... go get em eh?

Oh look, its me again, I'll take 173. Mr. Schindler, you are up next!

Tom Schindler
05-06-2004, 10:01

Joe-- your next

That's who I wanted...although I figured Grady would get them, since he does nothing but brag about how good they are.

I'll take 181. Karthik, you're up next.

Andy Grady
05-06-2004, 15:44

Yeah, I was going back and forth between 173 and 121. I still think that 121 is top notch, and they will fare very well at Battlecry. I just feel that the big equalizer in this competition will be the small balls. Rage paired up with another ball + hanging robot would be one of the few answers to stopping the offensive juggernauts that are 571 or 126. They are my "X-Factor" team, and I'm sticking to them!

JVN
06-06-2004, 01:14
Crap!
I was hoping the boyz from Rhode Island would last until my second pick!

Good steal.

Karthik
06-06-2004, 13:26
I'll take 177. Joel, you're up.

Joel J
06-06-2004, 15:05

Koko Ed
06-06-2004, 18:39
I'll take 190.

JVN
06-06-2004, 18:47
After much debate...

I'll go with 176 - Aces High.
Our friends from Windsor Locks won't let me down.

Mr. Ross...its your turn!

I got similar comments from Mr. Johnson and Mr. Schindler.

You know what they say... may John win... or something like, may the best man win... something along those lines.

The only thing you will be winning is laughs from the rest of us when you are sitting at the bottom of the pile. After all is said and done, the only thing you will be seeing underneath peoples names will be the words "I AM ANDY GRADY!" Eat the Evil Empire's dust my friend!

Joe Ross
06-06-2004, 19:30

I prefer may the best man win...where Joe is defined as the best man.

I'll break the 4 digit barrier and take 1099. Karthik is up next

Karthik
06-06-2004, 20:58
I pick 782. Joel is up next.

Karthik
07-06-2004, 00:40

So Joel now has 571, 175 and 157. Too bad there's no more permuations of {1,5,7} coming to battlecry.

I'll take 596. Andy Grady has the last pick.

Andy Grady
07-06-2004, 21:59
To close out the draft, I will select the highly underrated ball plow from team 1307.

Let the games begin...

Joe Ross
07-06-2004, 22:19
One last decision.

Since we went 4 rounds instead of 3, should we drop the worst team (no matter the draft position) for each person, so results can be compared to other divisions, or stay with our 4 teams each.

Dropping the worst team is a cop-out!
We've all made our decisions, and now we should all have to live (or die, in Grady's case) by them.

I agree with John, lets keep the #4. I will not be dying by my 4th though! I'll put 1307 against any one's 4th any day! You are just jealous of my ability to select dark horses.

Beyond that, any analysis on the teams?

Who will be named the true FIRST Strategy God?!?!

Under 2 weeks left until we find out.

Joe Ross
08-06-2004, 11:26
Tom asked that scoring be done both ways, I think he's looking for any advantage that he can get ;)

Karthik
08-06-2004, 15:10
I probably should have asked this before the draft, but how exactly are we scoring this thing? In the same way as the previous FF competitions, or are we tossing in some new wrinkles.

Also, are we going to be wagering anything here, other than our pride?

As for the analysis of the teams...

Well, I think they're all pretty evenly matched. The only thing I know for sure, is that I'm the best looking of all the GMs. Oh yeah.

In the spirit of the competition--
I'd be willing to put down something.

Team shirts?

I already have a 229 shirt Joel, so when I win, you'll have to find something else to give me.

I'm in for the team shirt. However, I won't be giving up my only 1405 shirt, but I have plenty of team shirts from year's past.

Ed, you can choose from any of the remaining unpicked teams. http://joelster.com/draftpicks.php has the list, in case you need it.

Maybe I'll get Grady to owe me more then just a case of coke ;)

BTW I'll take 238.

Looking at the updated list http://www.wpi.edu/News/Events/BattleCry/warriors.html and the other threads, 69 and 1099 have dropped out.

We have a few options, as I see it. Karthik and I can pick again, which puts him at a huge disadvantage, since he's replacing a #1 pick with a #4 pick. Or, we could drop the worst performing robot for him, and so his worst robot would be 69. Or, we could Just drop 69 from him, and take his other three robots as an average.

Thoughts?

tom just a heads up we dont have a hook =D so you might want to trade us lol... (hook is looking VERY slim, its not working ATM, but we have an old design we might try... we shall see... its a heads up to all FF players =D)

No matter what, I end up at some sort of disadvantage with the loss of my number 1 pick. It's all good. I'm content with just taking the average of my three teams, and seeing how they do.

Actually.. even with a handicap, you still win. Results are coming!

Joel J
19-06-2004, 18:59
Ok. To determine the scores of each player, I calculated the score of each robot chosen. The method used was nothing knew, I just doubled the number of wins and added any ties. Due to the fact that I was watching the elimination rounds, I knew which robots were out on the field in each match; therefore, only those robots received win points when their alliance won.

Teams 782, 571, 596, 181, and 177 received byes for the eighth finals. Since it would be unfair to not include that level of play in their totals, they all received win points as they theoretically won those matches.

With teams dropping out at the last minute, Karthik and Joe were given handicaps. We didn't really come to a concensus as to how the handicaps were to be handled, so I calculated the scores as though the missing teams won zero matches. I did this just to see if there would be any wide gaps, etc, that would negate the need to augment the scores. And indeed there was, so...

The spreadsheet I used is attached. You can check the results for yourself.Rank Player 1st Pick 2nd Pick 3rd Pick 4th Pick Score
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Karthik 69 177 782 562 59*
2 Joel J. 571 175 157 1100 59
3 Joe Ross 222 181 1099 596 42**
4 Tom Schindler 61 121 228 839 35
5 Andy Grady 236 173 131 1307 32
6 Koko Ed 237 190 88 238 31
7 JVN 126 176 134 467 24* 69, had they shown up, would need to tie in one round
in order for Karthik to win. And I think they were more than
capable of doing that.

**1099, had they shown up, would need to win 9 matches
in order for Joe to get 2nd place. To tie for second place,
1099 would need to win 8 matches and tie the last.

Cue the Queen people.

Imagine that, a Canadian winning the "big boys" division of Battlecry Fantasy FIRST. It was a struggle competing with all you Northeasterners, but as always I rose to the challenge. I guess my natural talents and immense prognosticating skills shone threw in the end. (or i was just really lucky, but whatever...)

BTW, I wear and prefer a size small, but I'll take whatever shirts you guys have. :)

I've paid my dues, time after time...;)

Karthik has chosen a 1999 Beachbot shirt from me.

However, he says it would be prohibitively expensive to ship to Canada. Are any of you going to IRI, and would let me ship you the shirt to give to him there?

Has there been a final teams list for IRI? Would you guys be interested in another round?

Infinite Props to the Canadian Wonder Kid...
I dread the day I end up on the opposite side of the field from you.

Another IOU for my pile.

I'm game for an IRI round.
Anyone else?

I don't know, you seemed to enjoy that practice round at Long Island way too much. I recall you smiling and waving to me as you kept us of the bar... (Who plays defense in a practice round?...)

Karthik, what do you want? John has already offered the 229 shirt.
A 2004 Clarkson shirt would be great, or even something that you might have kicking around from your 173 days.

And yeah, I'm up for an IRI round.

Sorry man, couldn't help myself.
It was just tooooo easy.

Your purty little robot practically blocked itself.

Besides, if I recall, you DID pick us for our defensive abilities. We then won a Gold Medal playing defense. Weird. ;)
