we covered the sound effect stuff, but nobody has discussed music yet...
i see a few choices here:
-we have no music
-we have somebody write theme music original to the game
-we strike deals with garage bands where we can use their music free in exchange for promoting it nationwide through the game.
any other ideas? after some time i will post a poll, so don't go making a new thread for one lol :)
-we have no music
Obviously the easiest, but we need some spice... :)
-we have somebody write theme music original to the game
If we could find someone, that would be awesome.
-we strike deals with garage bands where we can use their music free in exchange for promoting it nationwide through the game.
Um, ok, if you know any with good music... :D
It would be very cool if we managed to get a theme song written for us. Also, I don't know about copywrites and stuff that might apply, but we could try to get the playlist used at competitions and see if we could incorporate those in. (Copywrites on the songs obviously. Not the playlist... )

well, there is this band from Jersey that is fairly new. I don't know if we can get them for free or not though. They are called the Bamboo Shoots (http://www.bambooshoots.com). They are alt. rock with indian influence. I am not sure that their music fits the mood of a robotics competition that much, maybe one or two songs, but in general not. "Talking to Death" might work, or "Interstate 95," but other than that it wont go well at all with the game.

Is this music for the intro sequence or during the game? You could probably get away with just crowd noise during the games.

Both, really, but we could definitely use some music for the opening.

now that i think about it, my friend nick is really good at playing several instruments. i haven't heard any of his original work, but the next time i talk to him i'll ask him if he would do something for this. he has never had anything released, so i'm sure he would be eager to get in on this

there's a lot of free, original music available at newgrounds (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/), and you can email music authors to get their permission to use their music, they'll usually say yes. you have to click on the authors profile to get his email address, if its listed.
ive actually never listened to anything from there, but it's an option that's available.

there is a good jersey band that i will try to get in the game if you guys want. they sold out their last concert :) . here is an stream of one of the songs i think might go good in the game: "Talking to Death" (http://bambooshoots.com/multimedia/talking.m3u)
I know a guy who is amazing with synthesized music and such, and would probably create you free theme music, or for a small charge. I'll see if I can get a sample of some of his music for ya..

When you first start the game and it goes to the main menu, how about this on repeat for backround music. I'm working on getting it to repeat right now. Tell me what you think.

EDIT: Thanks to Dori for getting this hosted so you all can download it.

I....
love it!
:-D I think this would definitely work for the main menu.
I can kind of picture it. ^__^;

How about an option for the player to compile their own playlist for the game from songs they have on their computer. It would add complexity, and you might need to write a plugin for Winamp or something, but I think it would be worth it.

I have a friend whose a techno junkie. I know he has written and mostly recorded one song, and that was awhile ago. I'll try to get in touch with him and see if we can use his song(s).

It would add complexity, and you might need to write a plugin for Winamp or something, but I think it would be worth it.We could do that, and not necessarially complexly. We could just force the user to put the paths into a text file (we could have an in-game interface), one per line, then just randomly select one and play it. It would obviously have to be in only a few restricted formats, but, hey, you'll get over it. :D

We could use Winamp v2.9, There's a messaging interface for it. There's even VB samples to do it!

Dori was kind enough to host the 43 second version I made. It is at:

Hmm... that sounds extremely familiar. So much that I had to go look it up and see where exactly it was from because I had definitely heard that before. After searching all of the projects in Fruityloops I came across this repeating mp3, and it sounds as if yours just adds a tapping to this pre-made loop.
Here's a link to the FL project file in mp3 format, hosted on my server.

okay I'm guessing we'll have to make another mp3 file for the menu music.
I'll see if I can download a music maker to make something..
sorry about that, impulse3D :(

Sorry about that. A friend of mine told me that he had made it and that all I needed to do was change the sound slightly for him to give us permission to use it. I didnt think to look in the FL project folders.
Anyway, I've emailed the creator of that clip asking for permission to use it in the video game. I'll post it here when I get a responce.
Sorry again.

No problem guys, just making sure you knew that it was a loop that came with FL Studio this way when copyright/permissions stuff are addressed it wouldn't end up as a rude awakening.

Yes. considering that my name is on the SourceForge page and the IRC channel, and Brandon owns this server, I'd say if they sued us it'd come down to us two. :ahh:

ok... i do have one bands songs... but a few things...
#1 they were taped live so the quality isnt that good, and they have intro's to the song... so they arent that good... and they just lost thier backup guitarist this past saturday in a car acciedent, so im not sure if they will replace him, or just quit, im not sure... they did cancel a huge show where they were 2nd/3 bands playing up in Providence in some nice cight club... so im not sure... =/...
ill host them on my ftp later when i get a chance in the next two days... *goes looking for the link* and then also they do swear just fyi lol...
on top of that... i think the menu music should change everytime you load the game... and have a playlist(like EA04/05 sports titles) rather than a looping mp3... because honestly... after playing games for a week... the first thing i end up doing is shutting of the menu music because it gets annoying and repeating...
just all IMO =D

If anyone knows of any bands that would like to allow us to use their music in the Video Game, please PM me or email me: dr3amingendlessly@yahoo.com. We really need a lot of music so please let us know what you can spare. Thanks so much!

*warning* kinda crappy quailty =Pwow, that guy can really scream. he could have a future in the hardcore metal community. unfortunately i don't think the music would go well with the game, nor would the majority of players like it. this is the kind of metal that is just for metalheads. it's too hardcore for most people. i think if we are going to have metal, it needs to be more neutralized metal, more widely appealing metal. for example, slipknot is death metal, but they dont always scream, in fact they even have some acoustic songs now - fairly soft ones.
hoobastank was mentioned at one point. they would be more in the range of music we are looking for. i went on their website but they dont have a thing to mail the band. you have to join their fanclub to contact them lol. well, i guess it's still a possibility...

yay slipknot!!! you mentioned my name lol... if we could get a copyright, MANY MANY of thier songs are radio friendly, and of course thier acoustic songs may even be TOO soft for the game... but my other friends band is punk.. im gonna call him up and see if i can record one of thier practices if they are still together...

The Blister Exists might be good, but i'll have to listen to the cd again.

I found out that AFI can be contacted by mail. I was thinking that we could use "Paper Airplanes" and/or "Totalimmortal". (i tried to get links but some of the stuff only works in certain browsers and the links weren't working and my login was timing out and yeah...). anyway, what does everybody think about using these songs?

Maybe 237 could give us some advice with Hoobastank, I believe they got consent from them to use some of their songs, or something like that.

i've got a few songs i would be willing to donate to this project, for proper recognition of course. I'll have to put them up on a website later, so people could download them
The 2 i am thinking right off the top of my head would be good would be 2 of the 'triphop' mellow tracks, they are pretty sweet tracks. I've got some break beat stuff i've done too....

we will give credit to all musicians in several places, including the credits, and during the game when the music is playing
