View Full Version : Years in FIRST?

I was just thinking here...we can find out plenty about the other folks on CD...birthdate, team number, what they do, AIM, et cetera.
Thing is, I can't tell you (without searching and thinking and lots of leg work) when they got into FIRST.
Is there a way to create a blank for a person's rookie year, as it were?

Oooooo, I totally dig that idea. I've always wondered how long some people have been around in this organization and often times when I ask them, I am way off. I think this would be a totally cool addition to user profiles.

It looks like the only place you can squeeze it other than in the middle of the field up above the text, is under the AIM and Yahoo messenger icons.
There already is a Join Date there (CD.com join date), but how would you (shortly) reword "Participant in FIRST since 19XX"(or 200X as in my case.) or is that good enough?
We could just all type it in the custom user title field if there's no room for it.

Nah, It's too filled with "I am JVN!" :p
I like the idea.

Excellent idea! I think we need to add this to Brandon's ever-growing todo list (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/todo.php). Don't you just love all the work we make for you, Brandon? ;)
Anyways, I really like this idea. If nothing else, it would be interesting just to see how long people have been involved in FIRST.

I will add it next to the Join Date.
Something like:
OR
Something along those lines.
Any comments on which would be better?
The second one would be automatically calculated.

I like the first one better since it's more obvious.

I like the Rookie year being shown rather than the amount of years in FIRST because people would be able to see what game got you started rather than having to figure out what year you began.

I prefer "Rookie: 2000".
This way, you can simply ask participants to fill in which season they "played" first.
Example, I joined my HS team in November 1999, but my rookie year was 2000. The 2000 game was the first one I played.
I think it is important to keep this convention in mind. I would never claim 1999 as my rookie year, but some people would...

I'm glad you all liked the first one. It was eaiser to do.
It's done. Go edit your profile. :)

First of all, I like the feature, it's great.
Secondly, I was noticing it's not in the list of updates on the front. Maybe Brandon could put it there? (With the neutral rep, etc.) Since, hardly anyone has added it to their profile yet, even the people who've posted in this thread.
Just a suggestion!

dude, that is hot. you rock!
Okay. Awesome!
Now.....
Can you make the member list sortable by rookie year? ;)
It would be pretty sweet to look at the "big picture" of who was involved and when.

The thing with having it sortable is that it would require that column to be shown all the time. You can search by rookie year on the advanced search page. Will that do, or should we add rookie year to the list permanently? It's easy to add to the list & make it sortable .. but do we want it on there all the time?

I agree! :D I 'joined' my robotics team on September of 2003! But our first FIRST game was on March of 2004 - Peachtree Regional! So I'm a rookie as of this year! :)
Good point!

If it's a small column, I wouldn't mind seeing it there all the time.
I think it'd be cool for the "kids" in this competition (me included) to quickly get a list of the "old guys" who's hard work has kept this competition alive for so long. ;)
Maybe I'm just weird.

They're on there, but sorting isn't available without a hack, so I'll do that soon..

This may sound like a ridiculous question, but the year we started FIRST...does that mean the year we joined the team, or the season we were a first year? 'cause I joined the team in September '02, and I was in the '03 season for my rookie year...so I don't know which date to put! Sorry, I'm so finnicky. ;)

Awesome idea and thanks Brandon for the update......

I think the standard for everyone should be the year of their rookie season...not the year that they first got involved. (started in fall of 1999 but my first season was the 2000 game, so my rookie year was 2000)

If you'd read more of this thread, you'd have seen the question has been answered twice. Once, near the beginning:
I prefer "Rookie: 2000".
This way, you can simply ask participants to fill in which season they "played" first.
Example, I joined my HS team in November 1999, but my rookie year was 2000. The 2000 game was the first one I played.
I think it is important to keep this convention in mind. I would never claim 1999 as my rookie year, but some people would...
And once again after Dorienne (whose very post you quoted) asked:
I think the standard for everyone should be the year of their rookie season...not the year that they first got involved. (started in fall of 1999 but my first season was the 2000 game, so my rookie year was 2000)
If you ever have a question in a thread, please read everything that has already been posted. There's usually a pretty good chance that somebody else already asked the same question, and got an answer.
