In 2003, they followed three teams around through the build season and their regionals and the championships. I assume the same will happen with this one.

I don't think it'll be the TechTV show...I remember seeing folks with Discovery Channel credentials on Archimedes.

I'm so showing this to the folks here in Preston. They all seem mildly interested by FIRST, so this should be a better intro than trying to explain a match video (not that that's a bad thing).

After the merger, the series Let Er Rip was dropped from programming. The show on FIRST 2004 was the only Let Er Rip show to air. It aired just prior to the merger when the two logos were being displayed and in commercials. To my knowledge the show has not aired at all since the merger. If Discovery is doing something, it's a different show.

I know that iff you have DirecTV and the "total choice package" you get Discovery Science Channel. On my DirecTV system it just says "The Science Channel" in the lovely guide but the channel is really "The Discovery Science Channel" It is somewhere in the 200s by the regular Discovery Channel.

I know that last year they followed 3 teams and only focused on those three... they also failed to mention the Chairmans award winner, Woodie Flowers winner, and the National Champions, they just stopped when the teams they followed got knocked out.

I hope this year is a little less dissappointing!

I remember in nationals at team 56 pit there was a someone taping them and asking them questions. After they were done i asked someone on the team who was that and what is the deal with the camera. They answered that it is the discovery channel and they are taping them and i think the other team was 102 (not sure about this). With this deal for taping them that the team would have to build another robot after nationals. I never found out if they build a second robot or not, but i think team 56 and or 102might be on that program. once again i am not sure but i remember that in national with team 56.

Thanks for the heads up. This was no doubt the best hour of FIRST coverage I've seen, but then again I'm a bit biased. It was well done and would be a great video for any school or potential sponsor to watch to get the feel of what FIRST is all about.

It explained all the basics about the program (what we do, how much time we don't have, etc.) and covered the teams quite well. It also captured the excitement and emotion that was present in Atlanta pretty well.

I also like that they referred to us as the "guardian angles". What a complement! Being a part of your team and the One Day Wonder was truly one of the highlights of my 4 years in FIRST. I will never forget it.

It's ironic that all 3 teams they ended up following ended up in Archie. The story of 1396 was particularly inspiring.
I would still like to see a Real World like show following the trails and tribulations of 1 team throughout a whole year. That would also serve as a good road map for rookie teams to see what is reqired for a FIRST team to function. Just showing brief highlights of the build process and competition sells FIRST short of what it truly is.

I second that. Even thought I knew the final outcome I couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen next. Discovery did an excellent job with the footage. I remember going into the match with 1396. Their enthusiasm was infectious. You would have never known the troubles they had gone through at the competition to compete. Great job again 1396!

if they did a real world of a team-- that'll be cool-- hard to pick what team though to show rookies--some teams where they live they have better funding and support-- all well it's a good idea though

Do you have a DishNetwork PVR or a DirecTivo? If so, if you remove the hard drive and plug it into your computer, you can access the recordings. To convert them to a standard format, you will need an additional piece of software.

If it is a DishNetwork PVR, sign up for the DishRip Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dishrip) and read through the files section. There are several pieces of software that can convert video from the DishPVR format to MPEG2

If it is a DirecTivo, download DVRchive (http://www.ptvupgrade.com/support/DVRchive/), which will convert from TiVo format to MPEG2.

Any one have a copy up and running? Or know where i can get a copy of the program. I would like to use the first few minuets to help explain what FIRST is all about and i think that video does it well in the first few minutes. If anyone could send me a copy i would be very grateful.

I have it on TIVO and need to buy blank videos to play it at robotics, then I have the capability to put it to cd and on web, but need husband's help to do that and his time to help is rare.

Bit torrent is something like a peer-peer file transering program. Where once one person downloads it, they will share the load if other ppl try and download the same file. At least that is my understanding of it. :)

BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. The key philosophy of BitTorrent is that users should upload (transmit outbound) at the same time they are downloading (receiving inbound.) In this manner, network bandwidth is utilized as efficiently as possible. BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases, in contrast to other file transfer protocols.

One analogy to describe this process might be to visualize a group of people sitting at a table. Each person at the table can both talk and listen to any other person at the table. These people are each trying to get a complete copy of a book. Person A announces that he has pages 1-10, 23, 42-50, and 75. Persons C, D, and E are each missing some of those pages that A has, and so they coordinate such that A gives them each copies of the pages he has that they are missing. Person B then announces that she has pages 11-22, 31-37, and 63-70. Persons A, D, and E tell B they would like some of her pages, so she gives them copies of the pages that she has. The process continues around the table until everyone has announced what they have (and hence what they are missing.) The people at the table coordinate to swap parts of this book until everyone has everything. There is also another person at the table, who we'll call 'S'. This person has a complete copy of the book, and so doesn't need anything sent to him. He responds with pages that no one else in the group has. At first, when everyone has just arrived, they all must talk to him to get their first set of pages. However, the people are smart enough to not all get the same pages from him. After a short while they all have most of the book amongst themselves, even if no one person has the whole thing. In this manner, this one person can share a book that he has with many other people, without having to give a full copy to everyone that's interested. He can instead give out different parts to different people, and they will be able to share it amongst themselves. This person who we've referred to as 'S' is called a seed in the terminology of BitTorrent.

Not to be a wet blanket here or anything, but you do all realize that you are engaging in piracy, don't you? What you are doing is a blatently illegal activity.

The Discovery Science Channel broadcast of "FIRST Robotics: The Frenzy" is a commercial broadcast, and it is not in the public domain. The Discovery Science Channel retains all right to the material in that broadcast, including all content, intellectual property, and rebroadcasting rights. It is their program, and they have not given any FIRST teams permission to capture it, store it, or make it available to anyone else. The Discovery Science Channel retains all the rights to that show, and we are honor-bound to respect those rights.

Yes, it is a really cool show. Yes, lots of us want to see it. Yes, folks are "only trying to help" by making copies of it available on the web for those that did not get to see the broadcast. But the fact is making an illegal copy of a broadcast program and posting it for public download is an illegal act, no matter how well intentioned you may be.

You have two options if you missed this show: watch the show on the Discovery Science Channel (it is being broadcast again on October 7 and 8), or obtain a legal, licenced copy from a permitted source (e.g. buy a copy from the Discovery Science Channel).

If you have captued the show and are hosting it for download, you are infringing on the rights of the Discovery Science Channel to control and distribute material that they - not you - own. You are committing piracy of a copyrighted product, and you are breaking the law. If you are downloading the show from one of these sources to view it, then - there is no nice way to say this - you are a thief. Modifiers such as "it is only a little thing" or "everybody is doing it" or "it's not for me, it's for the team" or "I wouldn't buy it anyway" or "I'm not selling it to make any money" don't make any difference - you are a theif.
