Hey guys, sunday night i am way too bored... this just poped up in my mind... i think it would be awesome to have a FIRST prom every year. yes, i know this is a crazy thought, a crazy idea (some might think its cool), but its possible. a lot of issues will eventually come up. but we can solve it. ideas, comments, suggestions...? :)
Yo arefin that is a good idea, if it ever pulled through i would ask you to the prom. :D

*two thumbs up* on that idea.
I honestly, though, think it'd be a problem for FIRSTers in other places.
Maybe if we had an assortment of proms in different places, like regionals, maybe it would work out.
Hmm...good idea Finny! =D

I'm digging this idea. A variation on that....
If college students in FIRST got together and had some type of get together at a venue. For instance, a Boston get together at Avalon or something like that.

I think it needs to be held at Nationals, during the party thing, and just make the party longer. :D I think that's a really cool idea! You should bring that up to a "high up" person in FIRST and see if it could be arranged.

Hmmm but what about the guy to girl ratio? For example, I'd have far too many dates, including my husband :P. I married a technokat a few hours ago, but you know, life goes. Hmmm. Maybe not so much Prom. I don't liek that. Just a major major dance party, which means good music.

It'll be an online prom.
Multiple streaming webcasts from your state's FIRST prom. Sound good? :p

Speaking seriously, how would we actaully organize this? A lot of times we scheme up these great things on Chief, ;), ask me for details on what I've schemed, and they just...don't occur. If we're gonna start somethign let's actaully make it happen eh?

There better be DDR at this prom too.... darn it.And Punch and Pie. Free Punch and Pie.
Eugenia Gabrielov

YES!
DDR is a must
Pie
Krispy Kremes
ROBOTS! If the guys run out of dates to take, they can take robots...mmm..."My you look nice tonight Rowdy Pete 5.0"
Candy, lots of it
Brownies

I think it would be quite easy. It could work into the party, as others mentioned here. All we gotta do is provide the dresses, hair and makeup. And for guys, tuxes and gel. xD

ya i agree kinda in a way. I think they should have sumsort of a dance party or a dj at nationals at the wrap party or sumthin. but i still think the prom idea rocks!

We did something like this at IRI this year. I got a hold of as many people as we could get a reservation for/handle, and we all wore prom dresses and suits out to Buca diBeppo's. (I made the guys wear a tie, except for the Copioli's.)
There's a picture somewhere on here, I searched right quick but couldn't find it.

NOTE: The ideas expressed by Arefin are not necessarily those of team 108, and as such should be treated accordingly. Thank you.
It would appear my lighthearted tone was not apparent for many of those who don't know me. Our team has a tendancy to poke fun at one another, and as such does things like this from time to time. It's all in good spirit and no (well...not much) offense was meant of it :p

*one of Genia's dates* :D
I'd go to one if there was one within 3 hours or so (with a couple of exceptions :p ) from where i live. I'd assume that with such a large # of teams in the Detroit area, that there'd be one fairly close to me though.
Yep, that's it. So much fun. :)
That was wicked fun.

how about we all just be friends... and we all go together... so i am choosing every one... including... stina, dori, tytus, mike, corey... (anybody else want to be added on the list?)... :)
MAYBE its just turning into a joke now... but i would love to see this happening... you guys know we can pull this off... :)
JakeGallagher
20-09-2004, 22:50
I really think it would be a cool thing to do, if we can pull it off. I mean, it could just be a night to hang out with all the awesome FIRSTers from across the country, and meet new people. Maybe even make fools of ourselves... :D Oh, and we MUST have DDR. It's a staple.
What else to say?
Court is my date ;)

21-09-2004, 16:47
Jakey, I thought I was your date...
Well, if we're going to do it, we may as well start to arrange it.
What are the issues for one? Transportation. Anybody in the midwest wanna caravan out east for a prom ;) That would be a party in itself. Rent a coach bus, and get us on out :P.
Or we could mass-order greyhound tickets.

Well that'd only apply to three things:
a) if we have it at Nats
b) if teams are not able to attend Nats
and c) if we have it on another date and in different places at once or at different times.

alright first off... we will need to get permission from FIRST if we are going to call it a FIRST prom. then choose a place. one of us has to reserve that place... ofcourse that will cost money. getting this news to everyone... setup. tickets. i wouldnt bother to ask my own team if i could go to the prom as a field trip... because team wont agree most likely. why not just go on our own. inputs, suggestions, comments?
Make it during the summer....no school...and i'll be in FLA

You already called someone as your date! How about this: You, me, Court, and your date will storm the dance floor and break out some mad dance skillz. Sound good? 'K.

If it's going to be in the summer, have it in Manchester. There's a nice courtyard near the FIRST HQ down by the river...that would be beyond pimp. We might even be able to get Woodie to DJ for us :P
Well you could work with FIRST and the Congress center/Omni to see if they can host it in either, considering we're quite literally taking over the place.

I hope everyone likes this idea and it could really happen. I think the #1 place we should have the dance is in Chicago ;) Comon its the best place to have it haha

if there's a FIRST prom there has to be a FIRST prom king and queen.....
I vote for myself! :D

At the rate we're having dates, I think we should have a few kings, and a few queens of different sorts.
I nominate myself for DDR Queen ;). I love DDR.

Seriously speaking, if my team buses or something, I'd merrily drag along my CF to Nationals with my laptop so that we coudl, in fact, do DDR wherever.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Chicago (unless its at nats), since it is a big, fun city only 2 hours away from here.
In addition to DDR, there HAS to be some DJing or Freestyling going on. I even wrote a FIRST rap for IRI, but I wasn't allowed to perform it (it WAS appropriate, it was just that, well, ask Amanda). I'll rap it up at the prom/dance/DDR thingy.

I totally love this idea, and had thought about it over the summer, but never thought that anyone else would too ....
Anyways, as much as I hate saying this (because the way it seems right now, I am not going to nats) but I think nats is probably the best place to have it. You have the most teams there. But the summer seems better because of no school, but people do things over the summer and might not be able to make it.
And then, if we are really going to do this, then I guess we have to start fundraising. How much do one of these things cost overall?? (Ive neva held a prom but I know tickets can range from $40 - $125 CDN at schools here depending on where you go, what is included, and how much money has been previously raised).

But this sounds like a great idea, seeing that I probably wont get a date for a real prom :(

:( It's pretty sad. I am entirely incapable of doing DDR! Just ask my team. I (all 3 times) managed to trip over my own feet. Yeah, I can't dance, do DDR, or be very creative with duct tape. O well.
Still loving the idea though. Definetly will try to come if it comes together.

really I did ?? wow .. i completely forgot about that. goes to show how much I have had on my mind ...
i agree with someone else who said that it should be in Atlanta.
a FIRST prom would be pretty fun/interesting especially since a bunch of robotics kids actually dont go to prom to attend championships

YEAH! Thats a great idea. It will probably be the only time we see our college mentors in a tux/dress. It'll be a a gathering of team without any type of competition, unless you count Prom King/Queen.
