I'm taking a survey, so if anyone wants to help me out please reply:
What grade were you in when you took Precalc (if you took it)? Does your school have block scheduling?
Thanks all!

I took precal in the 10th grade at my school, Gulfport High, and now I am in calculus. I took it a year early. And yes, at Gulfport High we are on the block schedule. The best way I could describe precal is algebra 3, and also its only a 9 weeks course at our school.

I took pre-calc as a junior. No block scheduling where I go.

My school is not on block scheduling. I never took Pre-Calc, because my school had the nerve to schedule AP English Language and Pre-Calc during the same period. I took Trig and Anal. Geomerty in 11th grade instead but now I am in AP Calculus.

I am taking precalc now as a junior. I took both Algebra II and geometry last year so I could take precalc this year and take AP Calc my senior year. Most people thought I was crazy, but hey, what is a nerd to do? ;)

Rock on. You're not crazy. Sometimes to get ahead, you have to work harder than everyone else. I'm planning on taking AP tests on subjects not available at my school or that I can't take right now because of scheduling issues. AP Physics, Comparative Politics, U.S. History, and possibly World History.

I took PreCalculus Advanced in my junior year of high school...as well as the PreCal Lab (which seems utterly pointless to me, but that's another tale).
And yes, Irmo had block scheduling. A-B scheduling, at that.
Did I mention that I love college? :D

Precalc my junior year, although some take it senior and junior they take advanced math (really slow precalc?)
yes, we have block scheduling in rockville......best thing ever, 2 days to do my homework!

I took precalc as an Alg II/Trig class (1 year of Alg II the first semester, 1 year of Trig the second semester) in my Sophmore year. We don't have block scheduling.
Im taking precalc now in my Freshman year and we have block scheduling.

Pre-Calc?
I was in it for two weeks as a sophomore then switched in to Calculus AB I am in Calculus BC now after getting 5 on the AB test.
My school does not have block scheduling.
Junior, no block. Regret it highly. Waste of time.

What grade were you in when you took Precalc (if you took it)?
9th grade. I think I have some kind of school record for earliest taking of math classes, though.
Does your school have block scheduling?
Nope, and a good thing too, IMHO.
9th grade. I think I have some kind of school record for earliest taking of math classes, though.
At my school there are a lot of people taking precalc in 9th grade including me.

At my school, we have a set of math classes culminating in AP Calculus
Freshmen:
Honors Algebra I/II
Sophomores:
Honors Geometry/Adavenced Algebra with Geometric Appliance
Juniors:
Honors Functions
Honotrs Trig
Seniors:
AP Calculus
Since we're on block scheduling, we have a math class every day all year. We have four classes a semester, which change in the middle of January.
I usually ended up with an A- or B+ in my classes.

we dont have block scheduling at North Brunswick, and im now taking Pre-Calc as a Junior. Im also taking AP Statistics this year, which enables me to make the jump to Ap Calc BC next year, instead of AP Calc AB.
8th grade. Took it (and Algebra I/II and geometry) through a special program not run by the school district.

You took all of those courses in 8th grade? Also, what program did you take them in?
You took all of those courses in 8th grade? Also, what program did you take them in? My math history:
7th grade: Algebra I/II
8th: Geometry/Precalc
9th: Calc I
10th: Calc II
11th: Calc III (multivariable)
12th: Differential Equations
The program was called UMTYMP (stands for University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program). As far as I know, it's pretty unique to MN.

I was innn...tenth grade. =) And our school has block scheduling..I think. Explain for me, so I can reply to that. I think you may mean like a certain amount of time in class? If so, yeah we had block scheduling.

What grade were you in when you took Precalc (if you took it)? Does your school have block scheduling?
Ahh.. here comes my ranting =\
My school's really stupid when it comes to what classes you can take.
Anyway.. I took PreCalc in Junior year because they REQUIRE that you take it in Junior year - no sooner, no later.
As for block scheduling...
I THINK we have block scheduling.. but I'm not 100% sure what that term really means.
But uh.. we have each class 4 days a week, 7 classes a semester. Around 50 minutes per class on average (varies from day to day).
Well, technically I took Pre-Calc in 7th grade, that was because I was in an experimental middle-school program within the school district called the IHP (Individualized Honors Program). I had a generally wierd math schedule, especially sice the IHP put me into what they called "independant math" where you took a placement test, they chose what book you would start in, and you did work on your own until you finished a chapter. When you finished the chapter, you asked for a test. No lectures, no assignments, etc. This same program also had me take AP Physics in 8th Grade (I got 3s).
Middle School:
6th Grade: Alegbra 2 (finished, but with lots of parental help)
7th Grade: Pre-Calc (technically took, but they had me skip most of the review parts, which were probably 2/3 of the book)
8th Grade: Geometry (they realized I had never taken it, so I went "backwards" -- other kids were taking Calculus)
High School
9th Grade: Number Theory and Cryptography first semester (new school, which couldn't accomidate me, sticks me in the first half of a senior math elective) and Trigonometry second semester (actually the second semester of their Alegebra 2 class)
10th Grade: Pre-Calc (again, but I did the whole thing this time, which was a good refresher of the Algebra II I had taken four years before)
11th Grade: AP Calculus BC
12th Grade: Multi-Variable Calculus first semester, Number Theory second semester (which was the discreet math section I hadn't taken in 9th grade)
My high school didn't really have block scheduling. Everyone was separated into three tiers based on their math level (regular, honors, and AP), and your tier determined what section you were in in all your other classes (english, social studies, foreign language, PE, etc.) Kids on the "regular" tier took Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calc, kids on the "honors" tier took Algebra I through AP Calculus AB, and kids on the "AP" tier took Alegebra II through AP Calculus BC (with a math elective their senior year).
My math history:
7th grade: Algebra I/II
8th: Geometry/Precalc
9th: Calc I
10th: Calc II
11th: Calc III (multivariable)
12th: Differential Equations
The program was called UMTYMP (stands for University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program). As far as I know, it's pretty unique to MN.

Two things:
Are you wanting to start a team in MN, if so, do you know of anyone else interested? I am a 1st year at the U of MN (graduated from Linn-Mar (team 967) last year) (though I have the credits of a second sem junior). I too was in this program when I lived in MN.
I took Algebra 1/2 in 6th grade, geometry 7th (wimped out of it), Functions, Stats, and Trig (FST) in 8th, pre-calc in 9th, AP calc BC in 10th, Linear Algebra in 11th, and Calc 3 and Diffy Q in 12th.
It is nice to be done with math, even though I am majoring in enginering!
My high school was somewhat on block scheduling. Everything but math, foriegn language, and music were block classes. This meant that those classes met all year.
Ryan Miller
11th, like Corey said. No block scheduling.
I hate math. Alot. I think I'll be using some Jedi mind tricks to get a decent grade in this class..... ::goes and does homework::
Many of you guys have such strange math histories but you still all finish up your senior year with differential equations.
My school actualy goes in order instead of skipping around and then going backward.
My math history:
6th algebra 1
7th geometry
8th algebra 2
9th pre-calc
future:
10th calc II / stats
11th calc II / III
12th differential equations / matrix theory

I took precalc last year as a junior, and we don't have block scheduling. We rock on with 8 awesome 43 minute classes a day.
Now I myself am not particularly a fan of math, but for some crazy reason, I signed up for AP Calc this year. I quickly realized that for me this would be academic suicide. I dropped it and planned on taking no math course this year, but then my art teacher and I didn't exactly see eye to eye so I dropped that class too and picked up Photograpy and Statistics, which has to be the easiest math class I've ever taken, yet has the most superfluous work load. Yeah, talk about senioritis.

I took pre-calc in 12th grade... I'm not exactly the quickest at math.

My highschool had block scheduling.
8th - Algebra
9th - Geometry
10th - Algebra II/Trig
11th - AP Stats
Notice the lack of precalc. :)
My friend Jeff Klien has all you early starters beat. Algebra I in 6th grade, Geometry in summer between 6th and 7th, Algebra II/Trig in 8th, PreCalc summer tween 8th and 9th, Calc BC 9th grade. :ahh:

We're pretty free to choose our math courses here ... or any course for that matter once you advance yourself enough. A lot of students will go up to Cornell University to audit courses there.
My 12th grade math curriculum includes:
AP Calc BC, AP Statistics, AP Comp Sci AB, Fractals & Chaos, Advanced Math Seminar (taught by CU grad students - Number Theory, Cryptology, Applied Statistics)
Yeah, I like my math teachers a lot. There's not much required work either...
I didn't understand the point of Precalc. It seemed like a summary of Functions/Trig and geometry. The calc that we did learn was really basic. However, it was perfect preperation for the SAT II Math IIC exam so I guess something good came out of it.
my high school did not have block scheduling, and they grouped trig and precalc into an honors course that most people (myself included) took junior year.

prec-cal i took somewhat as a junior last year-- it's really ib math methods standard level
but most people in my school take in either in their junior or senior year--it really depends on your ability in math and all
but yes we are on blocks --100 mins class-- 4 blocks per day
we go to school like longer than most ppl

This, my 11th, year. But....
I'm planning to take the AB or BC exam this May, and I've got 206 days to cover all the precalc/calc material in addition to normal course load and robotics. :yikes:
Take THAT math department.
10th grade here, no block scheduling.

Thanks to all who replied. Personally, I have precalc now, 10th grade. For all those who were confused, by block scheduling I meant half your classes from the start of school to the middle of the year, then switching to the ohter half of your classes. My school has it, and I love it.
Thanks again,

"up in canada" =). at least in ontario, we split it as being semestered and non-semestered
essentially, in grades 9, 10, 11 you are pretty much forced to take 8 classes for 8 credits unless you have advanced standing (math or music are the norms). semestered schools have 4 periods a day with the same 4 classes everyday from sept - jan/feb, and then they switch to the over 4 everyday from jan/feb-jun
non-semestered (woburn) schools also have 4 periods a day, but run on a schedule of "days" where each day (e.g. day 1 and 2) have a different set of classes. essentially its like a semester switchover everyday. pros and cons abound.
as for calc, only a very small number of public high schools have AP courses, something like 2 out of the whole city of toronto, with like 100 high schools in the TDSB. We have "Functions and Relations" in grade 11, then "Advanced Functions and Intro Calculus" in grade 12

Some high schools don't even offer that; they offer plain old calculus.
I took Pre-Cal sophomore year, I was a trailblazer in that. I could have easily skipped precal and math III and gone on to calculus without trouble, as the first couple weeks of calc are review. (it was hard enough climbing through red tape to advance one math class)
I feel good now about my experiences, because I paved the way for other students to follow in my footsteps.
In Sweet Home we go on a Trimester system, so I would say no on block scheduling.

Pre-calculus.... I'm currently taking that class right now! My school has trimesters and block scheduling--four blocks per day and a total of eight blocks. (Each class is around two hours.) I'm in 10th grade, but Pre-Calculus is supposed to be for 11th graders.

and yup my school's got the most confusing block schedule out there! (on 5 day weeks, we have each class 3 times, once its 85 mins long, twice 55. on 4 day weeks, which theres a ton of, :D, each class 2 times, once 85 mins long, the other 75 mins long... dont ask)

yeah, I took precalc last year in my sophomore year and am taking ap calc now. We had block scheduling though so I was able to double up in a few classes. It's the same reason why I'm taking chem 2 and physics 2...it feels like I put a bullet through my head but...lol
