Site 3 Engineering, Team 1097, would like to extend a helping hand to all teams partipating in the Sacramento/UC Davis Regional. A regional website will be up in a little while and your regional information packets are being created for your benefit. We also encourage all previous participants in the Sacramento/UC Davis Regional to sign up. We're looking forward to meeting you. If you have any questions about the Sacramento/UC Davis Regional, please contact us at jrobo@jhssac.org.
I was just checking in on the teams signed up for Sacramento. It's going to be a great regional. We've got a teams from all over the place coming. And Beach Bots (team 330)! Yay Beach Bots!!1! :D
But there aren't any rookie teams registered yet... =\

Yeah I know that is the main concern this year. We are still trying to look for schools interested in the area however we haven't had too much success. If any rookie teams out there would like to come, feel free to sign up. It's a good-size regional, lots of action, and I think we need to do another cheering face-off. ;) It's going to be another great year like Alaina said.

The BeachBot vote for the Sacramento regional was a landslide. No disrespect to the Arizona regional, which we've been attending for the past two years, they do an outstanding job there. But it has been quite a while since we've had a chance to play with some of our other old friends and we missed them. So we though we'd come up and visit the Cheesy Poofs, Monte Vista and Woodside, and maybe taste the Spicy Mustard ;) . We are looking forward to it.
I've been trying for years to get my sister, who teaches part time at Davis High, to get involved. But I couldn't even get her over to the fair grounds in Sac. Maybe now that the competition is right down the street that will change. At least my Mom said she'd come this time, and I get a cheap place to stay :)
Davis is very education oriented. (I can't imagine why, with all those PHDs per capita and all, you'd think they had enough all ready ;) ) Make sure that there is plenty of publicity in the local papers etc. If you can get enough parents around to check out the competition, I'm pretty sure they will DEMAND a team next year.
Don't be too disappointed at a lack of rookies. One thing to remember is that it takes time to build infrastructure. In LA, the regional committee has been working to build our foundation of support so we have a stable community. We found that teams were disappearing as soon as their NASA funding ran out. We were also in danger of losing the regional due to lack of sponsorship, as NASA was taking their money elsewhere (as they said they would do from the start). Since most of our teams only attend the local regional, it was critical for their survival that the regional stay here. This project has taken three years. As I understand it, the Sac regional committee is where we were a couple of years ago.
We are finally at a point that next year we might begin actively working to start new teams. Not that we haven't welcomed and tried our best to help the teams that did come along, but we weren't going out of our way to start them either. I'd rather start one team that will keep going year after year, and spend two years doing it, than start four or five teams that fizzle after one year in the same period.
In the long run, I think the regional committee made the right choice. Our newer teams will be much more sustainable and we will be able to spend much more time with them during those first two or three critical years, because we won't be struggling to survive ourselves. BTW while the rookie year is critical, I think it takes at least three seasons for a team to be fully established.

lol
I had the exact same reaction. Seriously. :D
This regional is going to rock.
w00t.
I can't wait.
Figures, all the out of state teams start coming once I leave the state :P
It's interesting that theres more teams signed up for Sacramento, as well as more out of state teams, than there are for SVR.
Wow. One third (11 out of 32) of the teams registered for Sacramento are not from California.

Hi,
ROBBE Xtreme (Team 56) from Bound Brook, New Jersey will be attending the Sacramento Regional. This will be our first regional away from the east coast. The whole team is really excited about the event.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm from team 1388, Eagle Robotics. We were in Sac last year and won the rookie all star award. That way our first year competing. We plan on going back this year. It sounds like this is going to be another fun year.
OMFGZ! WILDSTANG IS COMING TO SACRAMENTO!!!!!
I am on WildStang and that is what I said too!
As noted above, 1388 is coming back to Sacramento. I'm not sure why so many teams are coming from out of state to attend. Sac'to is not exactly my favorite part of this state, and I don't see it as being much of a tourist attraction, compared to LA or the Bay Area. That aside, it's gonna be a sweet regional. Here's to hoping that the last four spots are filled.

That's right, Team 111 Wildstang will be going to Sacramento/UC Davis Regional for the 2005 competition.
Well, since we have now gotten ourselves registered for the Championship, Wildstang will not be attending the Sacramento regional. I know a lot of us are disappointed that we won't be able to go to California as we were looking forward to competing with a lot of teams that we don't get to see very often (or ever), but we couldn't pass up the chance to go to the Championship...
Maybe next year!

Maybe next year! Well, that's sad for us Bay Area teams.
Who knows, maybe we'll be in the same division in Atlanta!
Either way, good luck and have fun!

Not up for a fourth competition?
I would love if my team could travel somewhere outside of the midwest region for a regional (But in the end, the championships cover all of the required travel time I demand from the team :D ) We will did a third regional this year, even though the original reason for it- getting a chance to win ourselves to the championships, is no longer existant because the gates have been opened to tier 1. But traveling is always fun (3 day bus ride to Cali?), and hopefully we'll be able to scrounge up cash for some travel. Good luck to all the teams competing- will there be videos of the matches posted online somewhere this year?

w00t. There's a rookie team finally signed up. Team 1662: Welcome! :]

Jim Elliot Christian High School, welcome to FIRST! Jim Elliot is a small school in Galt, CA which have just a few but very enthused students and a dedicated mentor, Mike Akahori, from UC Davis Dept of Engineering.
If all goes well, we will see yet one more rookie team at the Sac Regional Competition. Davis High School is scrambling to get off the ground - I will meet with them tomorrow to help them out.
We now also have team 1671 from Clovis, CA. That's the same town as team 1422. So they'll probably be pretty cool rookies.

Hey, we're team 599 and we'll, once again, be atending the sacramento regional this year :)
2 questions-
1. Is anyone hosting any sort of party/activity on Thursday or Friday night?
2. Has anyone booked a reasonably priced hotel somewhere near the vicinity of UC Davis, and would like to share?
Thanks in advance.

I have attended sacramento regional since it was launched 2 years ago. It has been an extremly exciting regional in my opinion. I was with MVRT 115 when i attended and it usually was our first regional. Im my opionion it is an extreamly tough regional, since its the first regional event and lots of good teams compete in it. The crowd is also crazy:) sadly i will miss the regional this year.

Same here. Sacramento was tons of fun the last 2 years. I'll definitely miss it this year.
As to the hotels, I stayed in Davis one night last year, and I can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was directly opposite the movie theatre in downtown Davis. Hopefully a local can name the place. I remember it being the cheapest we found in the city and it was pretty decent
We just got an information packet from team 1097 with some really useful information such as nearby hotels and tons of places to get food at.
Thanks to Jesuit for being so awesomely GP and sharing this information. I really didn't want to find a hotel myself. :D

The last two years we (Jesuit) have put together an informal regional at the mall since it was across the street from Cal Expo. Since the regional moved a few miles, the situation will be different this year. Don't worry, though. We'll come up with something.

I'd like to get my team involved in any activities, too. (This is the only competition we'll be attending, so I want to make it the best possible!)
Who's staying where? 814 will be staying at the University Park Inn and Suites...
I will now be going to Sacramento again, instead of BAE :)
I'm either staying on campus at Davis with a friend, or with 100 at the Holiday Inn

The BeachBots will also be at the Holiday Inn. See you in the pool! :D
The team list on the FIRST website says that a rookie team from Montana is competing in Davis...Now that's cool...
Only 8 more days!
According to the FIRST team list, almost 25% of the regional is from out of state. Now THAT's cool!

also cant wait for sacramento. Going to both sacramento and svr, i like the atmosphere at sacramento more because its smaller. Cant wait to see all you guys (especially 1097, you guys are so fun). And be prepared, our t-shirts are most likely going ot be "artic blue" instead of more boring gray this year. :).
I guess its time for team 610 to say Hello. We're your international flavour for the tournament. Can't wait.
Is there anything around UC Davis that you would recommend us do?

Make sure you hit up a Krispy Kreme/In-N-Out Burger at least once. More than once wouldn't hurt either :D
There isn't much to do in Davis, it is the epitome of a college town. The entire city revolves around the school and there really isn't much else.
However if you want to go into Sacramento you can see a lot more. There's the capitol, a train museum, and a whole lot of other stuff.
Yes, for all 9 teams who are coming from out of state: definitely go to In-N-Out Burger!!! I'd recommend getting some authentic mexican food as well (and I'm not talking about Taco Bell.) Any restaurant with "taqueria" or "cantina" in the name is probably a best bet...
There's also "Old Sacramento" if you really want to be touristy. There's a museum and a segment of the town that's all old-enized...

Just wanted to give a shout out from team 114. This will be our thid year attending Sac. One of the memories I have from Sac is from last year. The Bears, other wise known as the Bad News Bears, were unaware that there was a ship deadline and thought you just brought your robot to the regional. They found out about the ship deadline days before shipping, and were forced too send off just a drive train. Being in the pit next to them at Sac, we were able to help them out as they designed, built and programmed a robot that was a sufficient ball herder. If I remember right they seeded eighth or nineth.
114 was going to be staying at a hotel right next to UC Davis. But the hotel overbooked so ourselves and two team from Michigan got moved to a hotel about 15 minutes away. O well, it's no biggie. I am actually looking forward to talking with those Michigan teams.
Michael C.
I just checked the agenda for the regional, and it says there is a team social from 6:30 PM-10:00 PM Friday night.
Does anyone know if this is true? Or was the standard FIRST event agenda used?
You kinda get out of the loop when you're 3000 miles away
Thanks guys.

Maybe it's that HALO 2 Tournament! Regardless, team 100 is going to go, and we're bringing two Xbox's with two copes of HALO 2, just for practice =). If you're staying at the Holiday Inn, maybe you can stop by and run through a few rounds.
