I'm on a wireless connection ... the 'home portal' sits in the den, right under my room (about 14-15 feet away.) I'm also connected at 11.0 mbps

Wasn't there a thread something like this awhile ago?

It's kind of wowing me right now too, its only a Cox cable connection. Along with a router and a 130+ ft cable going from my main house, this connection is decent, and CNET might be deceiving me, but the results seem consistent.

Make sure you don't hit the back button to do a second test!

Lower than I would have thought. :o
This is with 6' cable going to my router and then 6' of cable to the cable modem. I didn't test this with my wireless network and no other computers were on when I did this. I should also mention the cable line to the modem comes off a 5 way splitter in the garage.

Whether or not you have an 11Mbps connection (typically wireless) has no effect on your connection speed unless you are running at a T1 or better. Typical broadband modems have a cap around 1.5Mbps so your average network settings will not slow it at all (unless you have a large surplus of computers using your bandwidth).

Remember that wireless has a large tendancy to have a lot of packet loss. Your theoretical maximum speed may be 11 mbps, but rarely is that speed seen.

Microwaves, along with many other common household devices such as cordless phones operate on the same frequencies as wirelss internet. Any such devices will cause packet loss and higher ping times.

I've seen it happen.

Also remember that T1 is only 1.544 mbps -- not much faster than common cable modems on the downstream side.

Some kind of kink in the programming. If you calculate your speed and then hit the back button it recalculates your speed as infinity.

That is through a hub, another 10BaseT hub, and my router.

On my home network--at least two cat five jacks in every room of the house--we've got six computers, one of which is my webserver.

It isn't the most efficient setup in the world, what with all the cables running through the walls and all the hubs, but not bad at all.

I think www.dslreports.com/stest gives me a lower speed though....
Yup (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/344359;417639;3e6eb748c3998284eb567e2c2b3a7152;3.0 ;www.dslreports.com/1105808671)

336/407 down/up, according to dslreports.com/stest

May I suggest a cross-reference with that site?

Incidentally--for anyone who has the opportunity, don't use TDS.net as an ISP. We used to use Tellink, the local NHPS provider, and even when we were paying for 512/128 they were giving us 1500/500. They just didn't choke the bandwidth. TDS does, and does it to a point where it is much slower than the 768 we're now paying for. We stuck with them because I had a static IP with tellink, but it may not be worth it anymore. We're looking at going over to cable now--they wouldn't give us a static IP, but my server doesn't get a lot of traffic, and I can just use dynamic DNS from www.freedns.afraid.org
