i believe this only works for the 4th edition ipods (with click wheel) and the mini
Ok Well call me a little hard core but i have figured out how to get the first rules on to my ipod. Its really simple, first open up the rules in acrobe acrobat reader. Then save them again as a .txt file. After that plug your ipod in, goto My Computer, and then Select your Ipod, it should say the name of your ipod, then enter the notes folder and copy and paste your new .txt file into the notes folder of your ipod. Then goto Extras on your ipod and then Notes, Pick the file that you did and read away. Its really handy when you need it on the run, since you don't need to juggle a laptop or a bunch of papers.

mmm, I cant get mine to save as a .txt Any help?
The notes folder has been available on all iPod models since the very first iPod.
By the way, the notes are limited to 4K in length, so you'll have to split them up into separate text files.
And please for the love of Mac, it's iPod. Not Ipod. Lowercase "i", uppercase "P". :P

How do I convert a .pdf into a .txt?
The notes folder has been available on all iPod models since the very first iPod.
By the way, the notes are limited to 4K in length, so you'll have to split them up into separate text files. To get around the 4K limit, you can save the note as a contact (if your iPod supports contacts). I would highly recommend iPodAgent from http://www.ipodsoft.com/softwaredetail.aspx?sid=1 for this, which can either split a text file into 4K linked segments or can save a text file as a contact.
I have attached sections 4 and 5 converted into contacts. Simply copy the VCF files to the Contacts folder of your iPod.
:-( And I thought having the game animation on my Tungsten 5 was neat...
I'll have to do this. ;-) Good idea.
That's pretty cool. Also, if anyone has an iPod that is able to display photos (the exact name for them, if there is one, eludes me right now), you could also store graphics of the field and maybe even of wire maps for your robot. That could be handy as well.

When you save it onto the computer, save as "___.txt". Just go to the name bar thing and change the extension.

iPod photo. And yes, that would be supremely nifty :D

Hey, I already put the vCard version of the rules on my iPod. The Game works fine, but I think there may be an error with The Robot. All I get is the title when it opens up. Is anyone else having this problem?

ok so i guess i need to clarify some stuff up. First To convert a .pdf to a .txt first you need acrobat reader 6.0. After that it gets pretty simple. Go to File the scroll down to Save As Text Then click save. Thats easy right? Now click on My Computer and pull up your newly saved .txt file it generally should be in the same folder your pdf was unless you changed it. Now copy the .txt file. and go to my computer again and click on your ipod. You should see the Notes folder there, save it there. Keep in mind you can only save up to 4kbs of info so i reconmend this process posted earlier.
So thats how you do it, once you have the linked files, you copy them into your ipod's contact folder. By clicking on my computer and then selecting your ipod, and then your contacts folder there.
Sorry to post this again, but am I the only one with trouble pulling up The Robot rules on my iPod? The Game works fine.It works on my iPod Photo, but I haven't tried it on an older model.
Hrm.. OK. Ill have to try reloading it to the iPod and restarting it then. Thanks!
Edit: Might be my iPod. I have a 4G 20GB and it won't work. Ill have to make my own, it seems. But the whole rules on the iPod thing is pure genius.

iPods have never come in 8GB models. If you mean the very first iteration of the iPod, that was a 5GB model.

i can testify for both the dell x30 and the ipod4G 20gb version. i havent yet used the dell x30 extensively mainly due to the fact that it is my mom's but i plan on bringing it to regional competitions, bluetooth and wi-fi really really help out. i ended up getting it for 424 canadian with all expenses included.
in any case, good realisation. the rules load up fine on my pod.

I'm not sure why you would want to read the rules on the tiny iPod screen and I havent tried to put them on mine. I did put the rules on my brand new Dell X50 and it runs excellent. A few years ago i uploaded the rules on my older Dell X5 and it also ran excellent.
I used Adobe Acobat Reader 2.0 for PocketPC.

What's the difference between the 1g and 2g iPods? What were the sizes of the 2g?

Well, since you asked..... :D
The 1st generation (introduced October 2001) iPod came in a single model, 5GB, and had an actual wheel that moved. The 1G line was updated in March of 2002 to include a 10GB model.
The 2nd generation was introduced at Macworld NYC in July of 2002. The primary differences between 1G and 2G was that the 2G models were smaller and now offered a touch wheel, as opposed to a piece that actually rotated. 2G models came in 5, 10, and 20 GB, included the headphone remote, and also became available for all you peecee people.
3rd generation iPods came at the end of April 2003. Big changes here: smaller, rounded corners, the control buttons moved to a new location under the screen (as opposed to around the wheel), and it had a dock. It originally came in 10, 15, and 20 GB, but soon after launching this generation Apple replaced the 20GB by a 40GB model and the 15GB model by a 30GB one. The 10GB model was discontinued soon thereafter, and the 15GB reintroduced as the "low end" iPod. (Sizes: 10,15,20 => 10,30,40 => 15,30,40) This iPod could also play the new "Apple Lossless" format.
Minis came in January of 2004. They're available in 5 "flavors": Silver, Gold, Green, Blue, and Pink. They all are very tiny (about the size of a slightly stretched business card) and hold 4GB.
4th generation iPods came in July of 2004. The scroll wheel gave way to the click wheel, the iPod thinned up a bit, and it came in 20GB and 40GB models
The 4G U2 iPod was introduced jointly by Steve Jobs, Bono, and The Edge. The face is black with a blood-red scroll wheel. It's a "special edition" iPod and has the signature of each U2 member engraved on the back. It was launched in October of 2004. It has a 20GB drive.
At the same time, Apple introduced the iPod photo. It had a color screen and support for holding gajillions of photos, displaying them, managing a slide show, outputting the signal to TV.... It came in 40GB and 60GB models :yikes: It is, IMO, the sexiest of all iPods (so far).
Then in January of 2005, Apple introduced their latest iPod, the iPod shuffle. It's the same height as a pack of Trident gum, but thinner (in both width and depth). It comes with either 512 or 1GB of flash storage (all other iPods are hard drive based), plugs directly into a USB 2.0 port, and can hold 120/240 songs (on average, depending on size....) It costs $99/$149 and is designed to target all you people who have yet to get it into your head that Apple is the best. :yikes:

Alright, I've got just three, err... four comments to make:
1) Isn't the "Apple Lossless" format just another way of saying "copy-proof WAV file"?
2) The U2 iPod rocks. :D
3) iPod Shuffle looks awesome.
4) Apple isn't the best at everything. Steve Jobs hasn't gotten it through his skull that people want MOVIES on portable platforms like the iPod, not just music. When will these people learn?
Anyway, thanks for the tip on the rules on the iPod. Now I won't have to lug a few binders around with me to regionals...

I do agree that Apple isn't the best at everything, but I do like the iPods. I think they got half way to the video iPod with the iPod photo and I believe that within the next year (maybe 2) we will see the iPod video. Video requires much more processing and data storage than music, so it will take them longer to develop. I think that if Apple can make one and keep it close in size to current iPods, then they will have a great product.

Alright, I've got just three, err... four comments to make:
1) Isn't the "Apple Lossless" format just another way of saying "copy-proof WAV file"?
No, there is no DRM anywhere on the apple lossless format
4) Apple isn't the best at everything. Steve Jobs hasn't gotten it through his skull that people want MOVIES on portable platforms like the iPod, not just music. When will these people learn?
Because you have tons of movies on your computer leggaly, right? Oh wait...
The point is there is no way that companies can agree upon to get movies onto these movie players. There is no content out there that Apple won't get sued over. It shows, nobody is buying digital video players because there IS NO DEMAND NOW. Apple is working on one, but I wouldn't expect to see it till some sort of legal movie store opens, same with importing from DVDs.
The world can't handle portable movies like what you're asking for, yet. There are a couple reasons. One is that there isn't a compression scheme good enough (except for possibly the new H.264, but that won't be world-accessible for a couple more months) to keeps movie at a quality good enough to watch but still small enough to keep it transferrable. Second is that there really isn't a player that has enough storage to make pursuing a video player worthwhile. The iPod photo comes close with 60 GB, but a 100 movie library pales in comparison to a 10,000 song library. Third is battery life. You're asking for a player that can show a moving image and output audio on a device the size of a deck of cards.... For one it will run very hot, and two, the battery life will be less than stellar unless you turn the contrast way down and have the volume next to nothing. Fourth is that organizations such as the MPAA are schizophrenic. They don't know what format to go with on movies. You can get DVDs in a ton of formats, like the Microsoft DVD format (whatever it's called), MPEG2, MPEG4, not to mention these whole new Blu-Ray discs that will be coming out soon.... In addition, movies are a much more profitable venture than music, and the MPAA is not about to give up its profit margins by turning mainstream video lose into a pack of rabid consumers with super iPods....
Yeah, not anytime soon.
Apple Lossless is a non-lossy audio codec. It makes files about half the size of pure WAV files. No it's not DRM'd or anything like that.

they say the Do not eat iPod shuffle. very professionally, its pretty funny. I've weighed to pros and cons of it already and its pretty intresting, Pros=more space for the price, 512 and 1 gig for 100 and 150 is quite the deal, most are up around 175-250 ever for the 512 ones. But the con and this is pretty obvious, no display screen, you can't tell what song your listening to. Well you get what you pay for and nobody is getting my 20 gig one, i got the rules on it.
oh i heard this on some mac rumor sites, after they start shipping the Shffle out they are probably gonna phase out the mini, thats ok the zen micro is better for the size. Oh and anyone see that newe 500 dollar mac they are shipping too, the Mac Mini, they look decent, and nice and small.

yeah well we kinda got into reviews of the handheld devices too. its called an evolving thread, right now i'd say its a teenager.

It is, it does, and I have.
If you just plug an iPod into a PC without installing anything, it will show up as a removable drive. Just copy the music into iPod_Control/Music/F00 and you are good to go (you may have to enable viewing hidden folders). You can also put any files on it, just as you would a USB key.
Similarly, if you have installed iTunes, just go to Edit-Preferences-iPod-General and check "Enable Disk Use", which will stop iTunes from taking your iPod hostage. The only downside to this is that whenever your iPod is plugged in, it will show the "Do not Disconnect" logo, and you will need to either open iTunes and click eject or use the "Stop Hardware" icon in your taskbar before disconnecting.
Finally, if you are going for replacement headphones, I highly recommend the Sony MDR-ES71SL (http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=168452&store=ecost&source=ewbfroogle&adcampaign=email,ewbfroogle). They are by far the best portable headphones I have ever used, and you can even get white ones (http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash/shop/detail.asp?dpno=176770)that match your iPod (although you usually will pay a bit more for white).
