View Full Version : 2007 Game Thread

Here are some possibilities:
So assuming that FIRST continues to grow at this rate, both in US and Internationally, we will also have a surge of teams. Which means either 3vs3 or 4vs4 alliance. However, I would like to propose a new idea: I agree with Roland. This new field has to be a triangular shape.
Why??? Because Dave, in creating the 2005 game, gave an absolutely blatant clue towards the 2006 game. Think about these tetras for a second: 4 triangles connected on each edge. Alliances of 4 on a Triangular field! It has to be it!
With this comes the style: a triangular field would be difficult to maintain aquatically. So there I would hold off til 2007, if anybody would like to start a thread about that. However, anothe rpossibility is the Krispy Kreme arena. Circular. It would have a hole in the middle where we'd put the human players. In a donut shape, it could be aquatic. The human players would fish little things out and hand them to the robots. It would be marvelous.
Okay, so here's the 2007 thread. :D What's going to happen in two years?

Gee, 2007, my graduation year (ignore). OK, by then, the anti-gravity floor would've been made, and all teams would have to build around that. :D
The field would be like a giant orrery, with a large sphere in the center. In order to score, a team would have to take fake asteroids and attach them to the center sphere. @end_of_match: go into orbit around the center sphere.
Just dreaming. LOL

i like the idea with the drivers in the center of a circular field... that was actually my idea for THIS year... ^^;; lol my brother was like, "ARE YOU INSANE???" yes probably... since i'll be a senior in 2007, its definitely gotta be an awesome game... i'm still going for moving parts on the field. how about robots not only have to go under something, but over something as well. but its always a variable, so we just might have flying robots. :-D i've already started drafting designs for a helicopter bot... i'm not kidding either.. ^^; i'm just having a little too much fun on Pro-E...

I personally predict that the 2007 game objective will involve real life situations. The teams create a robot that in autonomous mode can be tossed by midgets (see how you feel about it!) and land in a pool of jello (always wanted to do that). After the landing, the team takes over the controls, they are required to repeat "Toy Boat" 20 times while the national anthem is playing in the background. The alliances will be 6 teams vs 1, and will include clam bakes and halloween trick or treating.

i think it would be cool to see some kind of drawbridge (2 of them) that would start the game raised and the alliances would have to lower by completing a task during automous. if no one got the bridge down during auto., it would lower 45 sec. into the round.
you wouldnt have to cross the bridge, b/c there would be an alternate route around it but it would be difficult and slow.
might as well make it a CTF game as well.

Actually thats a common misconception. Most electronics will just die quietly, that or blow up in a shower of sparks but thats normally high power electronics (Ive had both happen but neither on purpose). Where you get that type of sound is when electricity crosses air and then it's more of a THHHWWWAAAAAPP! :ahh: <--- me being hit by a THHHWWWAAAAAPP!
Tell you what since you're all so curious ill pass on some insider information. Next years competition will guarantee the appearance of automatons that will employ electromagnetic radiation. Good luck to all on the 2006 competition. :)

Seriously, now...it will involve balls, have a short autonomous period, have two alliances of three or three of two, have captureable goals, and might (just might) feature gracious professionalism in some way. :D

I can't help feel that we're getting ahead of ourselves, but it's so tempting. I think programming is going to become a bigger part. Maybe eventually we'd have a longer automonous period. I'm still waiting for a ice competition, but I don't think that's likely. I am also still waiting for a circular field.

Already, we are not even into the second week of building and we are already talking about the 2007 game. Anyway, next year's game will be Helicopters, yep you hear right. They going to have to fly over the field and try to lift up 200 pound triangles and put it on a goal. Who knows what going to be for the 2007 game! Maybe HP will actually be on the field.

I htink that the competition will have us making robots to make robots?
i think that the 2007 game will be capture the flag and bring it to your goal. this will be played in the water with an air factor. also robots will be able to shoot projectiles at other robots and ah dig holes in the ground to put the flag in?
ok its a little farfetched but lets try this and see how many teams don't end up with a burning piece of swiss cheese metal floating in water with dirt in the gears and with a broken propellor. on the top might be a shredded flag.

We should start recording Dave Lavery's quotes and disect them for hints. :D I did A google search on some of his words Aaacckkk! (http://nicelytoasted.net/burnt/archives/002871.shtml) Guurrkkk! I'd like to see next year's game with human players from all teams in the middle of the field (protected of course) with nothing but a dashboard interface to communicate with their team. Or how about autonomous period is moved to the LAST ten or fifteen seconds of a match.

Walking on mercury, maybe, but a robot so dense it sinks in mercury would probably exceed the weight limit. :yikes: It would be an interesting game, though...

I know, but my point was: who wants a robot that holds only one or two poof balls at a time (or water balloons or flags or whatever they're using in 2007)?
i want a game that involves putting robots and acid together so that teams will have to worry about the coating on their robot.
also if you can play capture the flag and be able to shoot projectiles at the other team alliance.

I'm not sure how many times this has been said (I'm estimating a value of exactly "far too many"). But I would love to see a water based game in 07. It would be totally awesome.
Actually, if they used clear oil of some type, you wouldn't have to worry about electronics shorting out. People fill their computer cases with olive oil all the time to cool them.
Of course then it might light on fire and it'd be really expensive.

My prediction (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?p=484322&highlight=footballs#post484322) for the 2007 game stays the same. Lovely crystal ball I have. (It even works in hex!)

That was crazy; the robot fell from the very top, there was a loud crash as the lexan platform was cracked, and all the lights and everything on it just died. We have video of it on our team's DVD from that year.
I'd love to see a very small field element, like racquet balls. I know teams often have to deal with them in Vex and stuff, but managing them on a large robot and keeping them out all the small places they could fall would be interesting. Plus they could give the "gumball" effect on the field; imagine robots sliding around on racquet balls like every bad guy in a comedy movie.
It's really funny seeing what the prediction for the 2006 challenge was...
I think it would be really cool to have a robot relay running, where there are two picker-bots which collect gamepieces, and a designated holder-bot that keeps the pieces guarded inside itself. Then lay a couple 4" by 4" beams on the ground to act as obstacles. In the middle of the field have two ramps leading up to a raised platform. Not only would the ramps be covered with Teflon sheets, but for every ten seconds a robot remains on the platform and successfully fends off the other team, their alliance gets a 10 to 15 point bonus, and they keep getting the bonus as long as they remain on the ramp. :D
What came first: the student or the mentor?
once again. water. submarine robots.

what if they just modified the game (2006) to footballs. Just think of trying to make a shooter for that or pick them up off the ground. Human loading would be a problem.

personally i loved triple play. im hoping that they make another game like that: one with some strategey and planning, as opposed to just shooting balls whenever u can get the chance
Make EMP devices legal! :D All unshielded electronics are shot. The hardest part would be making the radius small enough!

From what I saw on the webcast, the hints that are being referred to, are the many times they incorporated red/green/blue lights into the introductions on Einstein .

They made a joke, saying that the lights in Auton would be Red i believe, then change to blue for the next two rounds, then in the final round, flicker between all three.
They made the same joke at Western Michigan and probably other regionals. Everyone from WM were all saying the same thing good one Dave.

i apologize, i should have known that there was a large majority that were not at the Championship. the MC of the Einstein field had a teaser for us all. it was a handheld board that had red, blue, and green lights on it.
he stated that FIRST has decided that the game was too easy for the robots on the field. so that in autonomous, the "green" light would turn red. then during the first period, it would turn blue. the next period it would be green. then in the final period it would flash between red and blue. he said, your cameras have the ability of reading all of these color, but will they? everyone thought he was serious at this point, and you could that the teams on the field were thrown back.
then he revealed that it was a joke. everyone was relieved. but he said, "there is always next year!" he also said this a couple other times between matches. so, my first explanation (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=498197&postcount=63) behind the three alliances from the three colors comes from event at the Championship.

When I finish it. It will take a little bit longer than I expected, but thankfully I'm going to borrow the 174 autodeck computer back in the high school to finish it if I can't finish the animation here at college. Like a week or so, I'll let people know when it is done.
And I know I'm ok at Autodeck, but I don't own...yet...
Topic: I think, the best possibily when it comes to if there was a hint, is the importance of color. There has been many games where the color of something or the placement of certain colored objects matters more than just placeing them there. To have a game where there are more instances of color, like sorting, placeing, and divideing away from other colors.
Also, I think maybe he means wait till next year so I can pull off another joke on you guys and you'll never know it.
Or that they will make the Finals harder next year.

I think instead of 3 alliances there will still be 2 but maybe the green color would be a bonus light (i.e. perhaps when lit green the points are double) or something to that effect, I hate guessing cause I'm never close, there is one thing for sure and that that at least one robot will be on the field...
Maybe they will test teamwork and make it so the driver can only see half the field the the human player job is to direct them in some way... That would stretch the limits on something other than the robot.

Its already almost like that. If your team goes to an offseason event give driving a shot, it can get really hard to see what on Earth you're doing. Anyway, I think the triple alliance would be cool, but to keep pushing the CMUcam, they'd need another color for it to track, I don't see one that would contrast enough with red, green, and blue as well as event lighting.

90 second matches - 15 seconds of which are autonomous
I like the idea of having matches be shorter. It allows for more matches to be played.

I would love to see something as devious as the '99 floppies again. That year was fun because you saw so many different teams try different ways to pick them up. Some teams scooped them, some used rollers (like us), some used claws, some used arms with all velcro, etc....

How about a metal non-folding armrestless chair? Before you laugh, think about it, you can stack it, grip it, corral stuff it it (If you add netting), lift your robot on it and soforth. Just imagine, a game where you stack chairs with balls in them and can pull yourself on top of the stack for extra points. (5 x number of chairs in the stack maybe?)

industrial strength pool noodels (so they won't get wrecked by robots)
lawn chairs
metal cafeteria trays
blocks of wood (but have 10 different shapes for them, so you have to design a manipulator that can adapt to more than one shape)
old car tires
large metal cans
large lawn decorations (flamingos, gnomes, etc.)

Oh just another thought as i was talking to Jay. I think the vision system that changed colours will have something to do with the game next year...maybe/maybe not who knows but just a thought!!

Well, we are about due for a new game piece. (the pattern the past few years: floppies, ball, ball, ball, bin, ball (2 sizes), tetra, ball)
Light

Light
You mean like using reflectors to direct light onto a photosensitive resistor with a green light above it for aiming?
2 Ideas:
1) Auto mode in the middle of the game. A lot of this years robots just did a point and shoot for their auto mode. It would be more interesting if the robot had a task to do autonomously after a period of remote control, that involved it returning to a place where it could be controlled again.
2)"No Wheels or tracks" - all the robots would need to walk or drag/push themselves to move in some fashion.

Kinda.
You use Light in the same way we use Balls, tetras, bins and such. We use light to make our scores.
I was also thinking of a game in which for the first minute, drivers can't see the field and the human players dirrect the drivers.
And I really really like the chair idea.
i know is already been said, but i mean theres obviously gonna be something in next year's game concerning the three lights (red blue & green) because of all the "hints" mc's have been making and since in the "game hint" picture (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41024&highlight=game+hint) there is the three lights reflected in the upper left hand corner area of the robot's back.

[QUOTE=Winged Wonder]so we're going to need parachutes in 2006
Im calling jumping out of our robot!!
This is what I think about next year's game has to do something with squares ant three different lights obviously

Something that keeps coming into my mind. The FIRST logo is a triangle, circle, and a square. In 2005 we had a triangle, in 2006 we had a circle...2007 = square? Possibly...but i can't think of any game piece that would be a square
What if it is a combo of the options above? After this year's projectiles, I would consider anything to be fair game. What about shooting balls to knock things like pyramids or boxes over? The point value of hitting the boxes changes as the period switches and the light for the target changes color.... I think that we should consider the possibility of a combo shape year.

The Championship criteria have been posted recently on the FIRST site http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2007/cmp_elig.htm notice how the 2007 regional winners isn't followed by a 3 in perenthisis like everything else is. I think this means the number of teams on the field will be changed this year.

Well, in 2005 http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2005/cmp_elig.htm they put the (three per event) next to the regional winners, but in 2006, they didnt: http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2006/cmp_elig.htm. (http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2006/cmp_elig.htm)
Just provinding some info,

They can't increase the number of teams on the field because that may call for a bigger field. They also can't decrease the number of teams on the field
because there are soo many teams at regionals. We'll just have to see when they release the hint..or during kickoff. lol

If they shrink the size limit they could easily fit more bots on the field.
I guess they don't want to give away any of their secret plans yet.
I think they should release the game hint when registration opens this year just to give us an extra 2 months of insanity.
