Dave Lavery was right... all we had to do was type in "attack old lady" and when we started up our robot it did. No help from us. :ahh:

Yea, he's really not kidding, I was there (I'm the one in the red shirt in the middle of the group)...We're still laughing about this one...That was seriously THE VERY FIRST time we had turned it on and connected to it with it on the ground.

:ahh: That's pretty funny. Can I have your reassurance that no women over the age of 70 were harmed in the making of this film?

Wait, that can't be real. The code at least can't be.

*Waits to be called stupid freshman*

EDIT: Whats that the code for? It's definately not for the robot.

*Waits to be called stupid freshman*.
No, we will not call you a "stupid freshman", we attribute your hasty remark due to lack of expirence, but you will gain that in time. For now we will call you, like many other first years, "Rookie". With that title we accept the fact that at some points you will say wrong, and at others you will utterly amaze us with your brilliance.

I also have to say that the robot attacking that old lady, well that's just freaking priceless.

I got a chuckle out of that, have to make a dongle with a big e-stop button hooked to the disable pin on the competition port when we test. :D

Great opportunity to make a "Beware of Robot" button...

If you get something from lsdiodes.com (they sell LEDs so it wouldn't be that hard to use...) you get a free "Robots will kill you." sticker.

:D

Not quite what FIRST is about, but oddly appropriate at the moment.

oh my... this reminds me of last year when we visited a nursing home. The robot was disabled and no one was near the controls but it drove forward and almost gave the poor old people a heart attack... :ahh:

Until today I didn't know that 'old lady' was a color. :p
And what does that say about Lavery (at the beginning sequence)?

The video of the practice session taking off and going in reverse OUTSIDE the intended playing field makes me say one thing:

Where the heck was that team's SAFETY officer during practice? It's never too soon to have someon on your team on-board to take care of such things. Glad to see that nobody got hurt.....at least that time.

ps: It did give me some great ideas for use of "cut-away" shots in a video though.,...

Cool bumper sticker, I wonder how many people will have them on their robots? We put one of those on last year's transport, it gets a lot of laughes from the freshmen on the team. I wonder when they'll find out that its true.

Team Safety Officer?

Safety?

Who needs safety? My team is experimenting with highly flammable materials near open fires and we don't need any safety people. Nothing bad has happened (yet :yikes: ), so what's all this safety nonsense?

dhitchco

I hope y'all are joking:
Go back and read section seven (7) of the manual.

Per 7.3, every team "should" review all the FIRST safety policies and procedures PRIOR to participating in an event.....so start that process today!

Per 7.3.3, each team "should" appoint a safety captain. He or she will receive a special badge at each event....Again, why not start the process today during your own practices.

Lastly, this year is a new guideline (7.3.1) about traveling together in GROUPS in strange cities during the regionals and at National. It's better to be safer than sorry. Nobody should be traveling alone (walking back to hotel, etc.) ever...........

Safety isn't an "afterthought"........

reventlov
02-02-2005, 10:06
Remind me again, what our personal safety at the regional (before, after, any time we leave...) has to do with a video of a robot driving towards an older woman???

dhitchco
02-02-2005, 10:13
It has nothing (per se) to do with the original thread.....

Other than the fact that this team's robot "COULD HAVE" caused a serious accident at a practice session. yes, the original video was funny indeed, but it's also a reminder that each team should be cognizant of safety ALL OF THE TIME (in the shop, at practice sessions, etc.)

That's all. just a reminder.

Eria4044

Yeah, people tend to stray off the original topic. But I was joking. If my team wanted any safety hazards they'd let me have a turn with the heavy machinery. :D

ok, I watched the video... and though you can't really see much of the "old" lady, she didn't look too old to me... was she old? And just how old exactly?

Our robot emptied all ten balls into the refs/judges/ifi table on thursday of NJ, 3 of those shots were at one of our mentors :). It was soooo funny, The IFI guys and computer guys were clinging to the table, covering their laptops. eventually we did get the code right though, we just needed to throw on a WORKING pot.

Give them a break guys! We're all human. When stuff goes really bad sometimes I'm a bit too busy thinking something roughly censored to be "oh no" to manage to do anything. It's perfectly understandable.

If you did notice the gap between the robot being turned on and the robot hitting was about 3 seconds. There were no more than 2 seconds between the man in the suit yelling "woah woah woah" and the motors stopping.

Personally I think that pretty good. It can easily take at least 2 of the first 3 seconds for the person on the disable button realize the driver is not actually pressing the joysticks (most of all if that person is being a good safety officer and watching the robot very intently.) After that it is pretty evident it needs to be disabled since it is heading towards the lady. Personally though? With one second to spare and a robot speeding towards an old lady? I am not sure I'd have my wits about me to stop the robot in time. I mean nobody in that room even came back into reality enough to shout something until the robot had already hit.

Even if they had disabled it instantly that robot was going at a decent speed and using the stock transmissions. Those CIM motors don't stop on command...they slow down slowly. The robot probably would have hit her anyway going at that speed. In order to not hit her the safety officer would have had to actually leave the robot on and the driver would have had to pull into full reverse...and even then...it might have hit depending on reflex times.

Team safety is thinking ahead and knowing what to do in certain cases. Accidents happen even in very safe circumstances. If you guys have a "robot attacking old lady" drills regularly scheduled and an emergency response all planned out I'm impressed. However you'll have to bear with the rest of us being human...and just not able to foresee some things.

I stil think FIRST should put up an autonomous code that turns around and fires balls into the crowd. Think about how much fun that would be. and it would be really hard to actually get hurt.

Ask around for a few people from the UTC Winter War Zone Scrimmage, and they'll tell you that robots firing a barrage of ten Poof balls at them from practically point blank range is not fun. :yikes:

Okay, not point blank, but from firing into th eupper stands? So 20 feet away? Also, can someone in post the video in a different format? My computers being stupid and it keep sopening real player for it and I can't open it in any other format.
