Where did you get your Gyro?

Can someone please tell me where they found their Gyro-Chip and how they hooked the Gyro up?

A good source is direct from Analog Devices. We went for the ADXRS150EB - Analog Devices Accelerometer 150/s Gyro Evaluation Board

Our finance department wants us to use the BEI AQRS-00075 Gyro that in a previous year's electrical kit. They do not want us using any alternatives. However, it is at the $200 limit and we cannot use it. Has anyone found a site/store that sells this gyro at a cheaper price?

The old BEI gyros are not allowed because they are not commercially availble. Good luck gettinig one of the new ADXRS's out of your finance department...

While you can find the BEI Gyro that was included in the kit a couple of years ago available from a company, the cost is in excess of the single electronics component limit. I suggest spending the ~$60 on the Analog Devices gyro part number ADXRS150EB. It is a simple yet stable gyro to use and program and is robust enough where it will last a few years and will be able to be used on future robots.

Read up a little, and it seems like there is still a question. Apparently, if you look towards the end of thread about Kevin Watson's gyro update, you see information about the possibility of counting the BEI gyro as allowable if it is "used". I would assume not until FIRST clarifies though, but that is just my opinion.

I know this seems redundant but I believe there is a limit on the cost of "custom circuitry" that FIRST has put into place. Our team mentors have deemed that our current gyro cannot be used. Can someone clarify this so that we may use the current gyro or would we have to buy a new one?

If it's a legal part, I believe you can use it even if it's "used" -- you just have to account for the "new" price of it in your robot cost totals.

The clarification came here:

Q: I'm trying to clarify 5.3.4.4 and the answer to question 1318. Are there restrictions to buying used parts and accounting for the used price? Does the seller still have to meet the requirements of a VENDOR?
A: A used part from a previous robot must be accounted for using the part's undepreciated value. If you buy a used part, you must use its fair market value. The vendor must qualify as a legal vendor according to the definitions in Section 5.2 and modified in Team Update #02.

There are two issues. The one off your old robot is illegal, as you must use the undepreciated price (new price) which is approximately $300. You can buy it used from a legal vendor, but nobody has stepped forward with one, and I doubt anyone will.
