You are using some form of optical navigation, using an LED array powered by components from a PrincetonTec Flashlight/HeadLight.
..And using that to drive the robot to Canada.

My guess would be these provide the obscene amount of light needed to use an optical mouse sensor for navigation. This would have been a better teaser if you gave us the PN of the chips. The look like they are Fairhild parts and they look to be in a 20PDIP package.

I'm going to say that this is for some sort of decoration with a super-bright led cluster :D
What they are trying to show us is that they will have LED clusters that are powered by Mountain Dew.
Just remember Phronist, they both have to be on during every match! :)

If they are on the robot then i would think they can't both be on simultaneously, because that would cause alliance confusion, unless they aren't easily visible. But if thats true, why is the blue one (I'm assuming it is blue when it lights up) smaller? hmmmm

Huh. That is funny. Maybe something other than people are meant to see it.

phrontist has been active in this thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31999&highlight=optical+mouse) which would be what the LED clusters are for.
