I don't think the old question should be locked just because there is a new question. It is possible for good discussion to take longer than a week ;)

It would be nice if the Question of the Week had the date in the subject though, so that we can know which question it is on the list.

This is true. Look at the regulation of nationals discussion. If you take out the non topic answers, it has still been going on for a long time. When people go on vacation, it's summer these things happen, they need to be able to put their .02 in too.
