they're not required. or at least i haven't heard otherwise in four years time, but they're just cool to have posted in your pit to show other teams what you can do. also they look nice for the judges.

they also making the parts a lot easier and quicker if you can draw up almost or completely the robot in cad then move and combine the parts into a robot. we have in the past 3 years and it is incredible!

No its not required but if you've designed your bot in CAD its probably a good idea to have them up in your pit to show your work!
This is the First year we've fully utilized CAD.
I learned Inventor over the course of 2 days going through the tutorial CD, and have fully CADed up our bot for this year. It is proving to be SUCH a useful tool!
Its also amazing to watch the process of your ideas becoming reality.
I also think of Inventor as a filter. It clears up the transition of your idea to a real physical object, and provides much more accurate results.
My suggestion to teams who haven't yet had the opportunity to work with CAD: get at least 1 person to go through the tutorial CD. It will change your team's life :D

In our rookie year (2001) we made up a really nice CAD package of drawings. We got many a compliment from the judges. We also got 2 Rookie All-Star awards in the two regionals we competed in. So I think the drawings help IMHO :D
We also had a nice cover sheet with our team name and major sponsor logos shown.
