They play cotton eye joe a lot at silicon valley regional
The new Chemical Brothers album "Push the Button" is very good, lots of stuff to choose from.
Also the new Prodigy album "Out Numbered but never Out Gunned" is full of nice techno songs.
One band to look at is The Faint (their new album "Wet from Birth") it is really good techno rock.
One final thing to get is Dee-Lite "Love is in the Heart" it is a classic house mix that would be perfect for robotics.
(ill scan my techno collection and post some specific songs, sorry to just post albums)

Techno is cool and all, but if you overdo it its just...boring...so i suggest mixing it up a little more...popular songs go over big too

definitely something like back in black, or sum guns and roses. rock is nice, although techno isnt too bad... probably would fit the situation.

Smooth Criminal
Alien Ant Farm
'nuff said
oldies but goodies (that way everyone can sing along and they won't be tired of the "popular" songs of the moment that are played out on the radio)
Try some classic rock...acdc, Allman Brothers (Hot 'lanta :D ), queen, the list is endless
or you could choose some real "oldy" songs, but I'm not too familiar with those titles/singers

you need to put some oldies songs on there...everyone loves oldies. A good one is "Just What I Needed" by the Carr's. ( my fav. song...maybe it isn't that good but i would love you if u put it on.) :D

My taste isn't that mainstream so I don't know how good it is for giant groups, but here is a couple that i can think of off the top of my head.
Yoshimi vs The Pink Robots - by the Flaming lips
Another one bites the dust - by Queen
Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult
Reach for the sun-Polyphonic Spree
Kevin Kolodziej

We've left out the obvious - Mr. Roboto!
Kernkraft 500 by Zombie Nation and We Like To Party by The Vengaboys are also FIRST classics.
I can't say I've ever heard it played at a FIRST event, but Ballroom Blitz would be a good one too.
And feel free to mix Shiny Dirt all you want...just let me know how it turns out and give proper credit (PM me if you want to discuss anything about it).
Kev
its a robotics competition, perfect for techno!
classics are great but i've found Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone rather enjoyable

3 songs I remember from the 2004 season.
From the Sac. Regional - Hey Mickey
From the Curie Field - DJ Sammy - Heaven (It kinda felt like heaven when our alliance ended up as the 2004 Curie champion)
From the Einstein Field - Darude - Sandstorm (I was actually standing down on the field next to a stack of 4 JBL Sub woofers when they played it - it was scary)

Baby got back and Sandstorm seem sort of random and misplaced, they don't really match the rest of them. It sort of takes away from the unity of the CD. Other than that, I approve.
EDIT: You could put in For those about to Rock by AC/DC. I guess I don't remember hearing it at competition, but it would still work.
Oh yes and Bananaphone, you can never lose with bananaphone.

yeah i agree, but i think it is necessary for about 2 more songs from Zeppelin, and perhaps some AC/DC plus a bit of Pink Floyd just to make it a bit more well rounded.

I disagree with playing Pink Floyd, I love them, but they aren't the first band that comes into mind when I think of FIRST competitions. They are way too "chill-out" to be played. I think they need to play some Streetlight Manifesto.

I haven't read the whole thread but heres a few:
We will rock you/we are the champions-By Queen
The Hey song-By I don't know
A bunch of loud techno and party music.
clocks from those 3 you listed
ac/dc tnt (denman starts singing out loud till someone slaps him )
I can't see why you shouldput rammstein on it , its a bit too offsensive for the competition imho

from an aged rocker -
in honor of our team name
Ridin' the storm out - REO Speedwagon
What else can I add that everyone else hasn't added so beautifully? Just some advice, you can't please everyone, but you can come close. Try and add songs that everyone can dance and sing to. (Ex. Cotton Eye Joe.)
Anything that gets a crowd pumping works, too. (Ex. Queen's We Will Rock You)
*tosses in two cents* I have a couple oddities to add... Lots of Japanese music has a techno-ish beat to it (if you need any ideas, just look to the anime! :D) Personally, I really liked the (first?) Ghost in the Shell soundtrack (Be Human, by Yoko Kanno). FLCL also has some good stuff. And of course, Cowboy BeBop...;)

the fact that rammstein sings in german and maybe 10 people there wil understand what their saying, its great. lol. but, im not saying we should put 'mein teil' on it. no. but, like, 'ohne dich' and 'amerika' would be good songs. i mean, okay, it say wonderbra in 'amerika' but, come on, woo-hoo???? half the robotics people wear a bra.... and, its not in any offensive manner either.

Actually, they say "wunderbar" which is german for "wonderful" :eng101:
Additionally, I doubt that half of the people in robotics wear a bra.
Furthermore, just because only a small percentage of people will be offended, we are still playing offensive music at competitions. The judges might even know german, whereas they are professionals from the technological industry, and german is a good language to know if you are planning on doing buisness management.

I'm going to just throw out some new suggestions outside of what else is being offered, even though my team will most likely not use these:
- Anything by Venetian Snares or Panacea
- Captain Beefheart Trout Mask Replica just to play around
- Space Ghost's Musical Barbeque
- Tabla Beat Science (or anything with Zakir Hussein) to have a mysterious feeling
- MC5, the Stooges, and/or Richard Hell and the Voidoids
- Napalm Death or Repulsion as long as you "get it" and feel energetic
- Anything by Frank Zappa because he is awesome
- Anything with Les Claypool
- Mindless Self Indulgence
- Refused
- Big Black
- Mustard Plug
- Crotchduster or Mr. Bungle for anyone who already agreed with Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa.
If you want people to think your robot is vicious and/or dying, play anything by Merzbow, Oscillating Innards, or Bastard Noise.
Furthermore, just because only a small percentage of people will be offended, we are still playing offensive music at competitions. The judges might even know german, whereas they are professionals from the technological industry, and german is a good language to know if you are planning on doing buisness management. Also, there are 2 german teams i believe (one from about 2 years ago, and someone tried to set one up this year i believe). As such it does bring a more international flavour in. (yes, i changed my mind in some ways, but there are still some definate no nos for rammstein)
the cha-cha slide is definitely a classic.
yea but you got to make sure its the speed mix and not part 1 or part 2.

Ramones has some music that would be great for competition.
While Pink Floyd is one of my favorites, I also think that it is a bit too mellow for playing at competition. It would clash with the culture there.

So, I only read the first page of replies to this thread, and I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this song, but I must say, "YMCA" is the all-time classic, not just at FIRST competitions, but at all other group dance events. "The Macarena" is also a personal favorite. I loved "Cotton Eye Joe" because when they played that in Phoenix, our charter bus driver, whom we had invited to spend the day with us at the competition, got down on the floor and did the most enthusiastic line dance I've EVER seen!!!
